You definitely should. Its also a great project if you have kids. I don't have a ricer, so I just use the back of a fork and a lot of counter space to get the cooked potatoes broken up and spread out.
Remember: the more moisture you get out of the potatoes (in the form of steam), the less flour you'll need to use, thus resulting in lighter and fluffier gnocchis. So, you'll want to get as much surface area exposed to the air as possible, and do this step while the potatoes are as hot as you can safely handle.
You can also make them from ricotta rather than potatoes, but I've never tried. I have some people that are kind of sensitive to dairy, so potatoes works better. Plus, if you're skilled enough, you can make these entirely without wheat flour, which works well for people with gluten tolerance issues.
