A friend wanted to use Telltale's Walking Dead for a 10th grade English course, did not do so due to age restrictions. In the end he used To The Moon.

I used to want Undertale, but the more I hear about it, the more I think it's probably overrated as fuck.

It feels like anime, MLP, Five Night's at Freddy's or some other shit like that which by simply touching, you enter some kind of circle of annoying "fandom".

If it's popular, I HATE IT.

I'm with you, though. It's one of those things that if you discover it yourself, it's a gem. But if everyone and their mom encourages you to play it, it's almost impossible to live up to their hype.

There's quite a difference with a good, popular and praised game, and that annoying feeling of "fandom" I'm talking about.

Fallout, The Witcher, The Elder Scrolls? All good game franchises who have a solid fanbase right? But for some reason, when I'll play the game, I won't feel that they are overrated, just that they are appreciated by the gaming community in general. Very unlike the games mentioned before.

Not to mention that, like you said, after hearing so much praise about a game, one tends to have higher expectations for said game, leading to disappointment during playthrough.

You're right. It's a strange kind of fandom where any sort of criticism or critical analysis is instantly rejected in favor of circle jerking praise. It needs to be a product that's just under-appreciated enough, but also hasn't been praised by any sort of mainstream voice. I think you're on to something, this classification usually falls to niche genres that simply don't have much content therefore it's easier for the fans to dismiss any negative reactions (as there's little else to compare it to).

If something isn't expected to be good, but has a gimmick or two that is enjoyable, it's a "darling" and any downsides are seen as negligible because no one expected much. Whereas established franchises and big names are simply expected to be great.

Not very long ago during the sales i kind of gave in and got myself a copy.
I wouldn't say it's for everyone, for sure. And it definitely could be called overrated.
That said, I did enjoy the game

I don't deny that it's good. Anything with that much praise has to be at least decent. I think the fandom is worse than the game honestly - attacking the game due to its fanbase would be pretty silly honestly. :P

Honestly I paid the full price for it and was super disappointed. A lot of people may disagree but I found it very overhyped
