A friend of mine had it on GOG, so I tried it a few years ago but I just couldn't play it past the training!!!
Anyway I got it now and I'll try it again.

Well, I've finally played the original Deus Ex for the first (and definitely the last) time recently, and I couldn't understand what all the fuss was about. I mean, I can still adapt to heavily dated graphics, it stopped bothering me pretty fast; as for gameplay, I'm way too new to this genre to judge, but it felt pretty satisfying. But damn, everything connected to writing is simply awful. The story is basically a mess, it's a combination of poorly connected cliches and nothing else, rare dialogs sound bland at best (not to mention the quality of "acting", there is none), and there is not even a single interesting character in this game (including the central ones). The reason I decided to try it was exactly the fact that it was regularly praised for having one of the best stories ever, so I was genuinely confused while playing. Maybe it's just me coming from a different genre: I've been playing adventure games for more than 20 years, and, well, I guess, the standards there are a bit different compared to action games (for example, see The Longest Journey or Grim Fandango that were released approximately at the same time).

This is the problem with people demanding other folks play these aged classics. If you don't already have the nostalgic attachment, then no, there isn't a reason to play it. You've already experienced its influence across almost two decades of gaming.

Grim Fandango is my favorite game of all time. But Deus Ex is definitely up there (my ring tone is a personally-modified edit of one of the main DX music tracks). And I think both have excellent stories. But I also played both when they first came out.
The flat acting of the main character's dialog in Deus Ex is intentional though. It was intended to allow the player to more easily project themselves into the character (Half-Life accomplished the same thing by muting the player entirely) as well as not give any particular bias to the choices the player is asked to make.

Wish i could see past the dated graphics (and i love old games!), but even watching the beefed up version with new textures and shaders and whatnot (pinned in steam discussions) did´nt create a fizzing sensation in my groin region. I guess doctorofjournalism has a point here, if you´ve never played the original, you´re at a loss :(

Been way too spoiled with beautiful looking games lately...
(Batman Arkham Knight, Just Cause 3, GTA V, Dying Light, Witcher 3 etc etc etc etc)
I just can't get myself to enjoy an old title like this because of the graphics. So even for 1 dollar I'll pass but thanks for the recommendation! <3
Also I don't think that this is one of the best games ever made at all :O

its a scientific fact that if you listen to deus ex theme song you will immediately replay the game again:

I spilled my drink after reading about my favorite game, best mix of FPS and RPG, a lot of conspiracy theories, a lot of coincidence in the events that occurred after game release, a lot of amazing quotes. Many years ago I hacked EVERY computer in the game to read EVERY email, read all the books/texts in the game.

This game also had one of the best tracker music. UNATCO theme - favorite relax-think music in game.

I dislike it for many reasons aside from its graphics.

You made this game sound pretty good and it's very cheap, sure I'll try it out.

It's been on my backlog for a couple years now. The recut intro and the Malkavian Mod videos are great, though.

why is the greatest game ever made?
-GREAT story
-awesome main character
-different paths to take
-can finish the game withoutkilling anyone (even the bosses)
-this game grounds yyou with realism and events that happened for real or will happen in the future, and that is why i think this is a unique game
-AWESOME OST, one of the best out there
-interesting side characters
-different ways to appoach the mission (stealth through different tunnels or rampage)
-the graphics still look good for a 17 year old game
-difficult choice in the end
-there a 3 sides (or factions) and all 3 have different and interesting ideologies about this world
-good dialogue system
-grid system for the inventory
-you feel like a cyborg
-you can pick up bodies instead of dragging them like DE:HR and DE:MD
-theres no map (it can be given in certain missions) so you have to use your notes
-all computers can be accessed without hacking them but by finding clue or notes in hidden spots-
Huge maps to explore
