I wouldn't say it's fishy, I don't think AWA ever provided suspicious stuff. It should merely be another marketing avenue for game to be more known.
But key assigned to account is slightly more problematic to delete from library than free license demo straight from steam store page, so if you are just interested in demo in order to check out the game, that would be a superior option.

I also doubt a demo key will give you a full game in 99% of cases, unless you are actually a beta tester, steam curator or reviewer of some kind.
