It is funny how many people slam Windows 8, but have probably never even used it. A few have, I'm sure, but I guarantee most haven't.

If you use 8, with one of the Metro removers/Start Button adders, it is just like Windows 7. Windows 8, right now, is actually a little faster and is no slower in any games that I know of. Once the drivers and software catch up, it will likely jump up a bit more in everything.

I used XP from when it began, same with 7. I was building a new PC in December with the intention of being able to play any game out there on max settings. I took advantage of the $14.99 upgrade offer and the free Media Center upgrade, as well. So it cost me $16.19, after tax, for 64-bit Windows 8 Pro with Media Center.

7 and 8 are pretty much the same thing, with 8 being a little bit better, once you remove Metro and return the Start Menu. I believe that when all of the companies catch up on their software and drivers, that 8 will actually keep going up. Early benchmarks had quite a few games a little faster on 8, without actually having 8 optimized drivers. I don't know why some people still think that 7 is somehow the better choice for gaming. If they are roughly equal, right now, which do you think is likely to get better? I'm going to guess the newer one that hasn't even been fully optimized, yet.

I took the time to fully test drive Classic Shell, StartIsBack, and Start8. I actually recommend Start8. Classic Shell's features have always been to bring back the now "old school" feel of Windows XP and a little bit from before, with a bit of the better Windows 7 features. That ends up giving your computer too much of a dated vibe in some ways, by ignoring some innovations along the way. I like it, but I don't love it. StartIsBack actually aims to just make the Start menu like 7, with a few of the newer innovations. Start8 ends up creating a nice hybrid of newer features, but with the 7 menu. It feels like it is the only one of the three that grabs the best features from all Windows versions and puts them into a hybrid menu. That was just the vibe I got after test driving all 3, for about 2 weeks, each.

I used to have Windows 7 Ultimate, but it was so buggy! It kept getting activation errors which took up to weeks to fix! It was SO SLOW, too, even though when it had Vista it was super-fast!

For Christmas I got an Acer with Windows 8. It. Is. SO FAST. It loads things like lightning, and all my Steam games work on it, except Metro 2033 which doesn't support Intel HD 4000.

I LOVE WINDOWS 8. Get it.

Everything that I'm reading from review sites, corporate or indie style, says that Windows 8 improves game performance without changing hardware. Assuming your hardware is supported.

The rage against Windows 8 seems to be directed at the Metro interface, which isn't mandatory to begin with. It's like ditching Steam because of Big Picture Mode.

Brang up a necroed thread. Sorry. But everyone is saying windows 8 is shit. well it's not I've been using it for 3 months now. And it is absoulutely awesome. This EXACT same thing that happened with Vista + W7. Vista came first and it was the first crack at a windows 7 like interface. Then 2 years later Windows 7 probably one of the best OS's came out improving on Vista. Windows 8 is Microsoft's first crack at the Metro interface. They will probably release another OS based on Windows 8 but better. Windows at so far in my opinion is the same level of awesomeness as Windows 7.

Vista was shit and Microsoft even admits to it and the only reason people were hesitant with Windows 7 was they didn't want a repeat of Vista.

Windows 8 is a whole new experience that you'll have to learn that is very different than what we've been accustomed to for the past decade. There are many reasons why you shouldn't use Windows 8, but most of them would not affect the typical person who only uses it to browse the internet.

I have had no problems with using Windows 8. Have you used it? Or are you jumping on the bandwagon?

The only issue I had with this OS since September, 1 is that I couldn't change the network type from work to home — I had to dig a bit deeper. Otherwise it's a fine OS.

I tried to get a webcam working in Windows 8 for my grandmother. She's not that great with computers as it is. Turns out if the microphone volume is maxed out, it doesn't work at all. Super. You can lower the mic volume in Windows, but it seems they cut that setting out of the fancy new Windows 8 Skype "app". A feature I distinctly recall being available in the traditional Skype.

Here's Windows 8 in a nutshell:

  • Take the classic Start menu, and make it as gaudy, overbearing and counter-intuitive as humanly possible.

  • FORCE users to download/install certain popular applications through it.

  • Make the MetroUI apps less functional (offer less customizable settings) than their traditional desktop counterparts.

I absolutely love that Skype was usable in the MetroUI as well, but Windows determined that Skype wasn't installed when I attempted their "quick fix" repair software. Real high quality shit.

I was considering Windows 8, but now I'm not touching that thing with a 10 foot pole. Even if you ignore the whole "forcing you to use inferior software" thing, there's still the lingering idea that this is the first step towards getting rid of the desktop third party applications altogether... so everything we buy/download can be monitored and regulated on our "Microsoft accounts".

I have never needed to download anything through the store interface. Neither have I encountered any problems you have. Nor have I needed to associate a thing with my Microsoft Account.

Here is my version of Windows 8 in a nutshell:

  • Windows 7, only slightly faster, with a few added features, and a useless Metro UI.

Unless you have a touchscreen, i'd go for W7, mainly for how it takes advantage of it.
