Windows 8 i heard has better performance. But I tried it last week and the boot time was super fast even for my slow comp

Windows 8's boot time really is significantly faster. Not that it matters too much, eventually you'll get used to the "no start menu" thing. It isn't as bad as people say, I was pretty upset when I got it; now I'm so used to it I don't think too much about it. Most of the start menu things (like managing uninstall, etc.) are all in the folder menu and you can always use the search function to find things that you can't find (like paint, calculator, etc.)
Also, all games work for Windows 8 (so far), in fact it works even better in my opinion. I had a lot of trouble with 7 and Vista with several games. Now they all work for my PC :P

My vote goes to Windows 7 (best windows I have used and my windows history begun with Windows 95), Windows 8 falls to the same category where Vista and ME was. I tried to use it, but.. even the simplest things are made so hard to do and find. It is not a working people's OP-system. Yes, the Metro looks nice and minimalistic, but it works only on multi-touch screens and on tablets for simple tasks. And some of my friends, who has bought lately a new laptop, has asked me to replace Windows 8 (which is the only OP-system that you can "choose") with Windows 7 (technically it is even legal to downgrade from Windows 8 to 7, BUT there is a catch - you have to get the installation media from somewhere).
And another thing is Windows 8 and software (how it discriminates other software companies/developers, even Valve for example).

tough question, while i'll probably end up using win 8 in the future (already paid for a license), right now i find myself having to use seven, as i find eight is still green and bugged. Every 5 days of win8 usage, i would find some bug or missing feature, or even some showstoppers. I'll probably come back to it in the future.

Windows 7 - Q3 2009 , Windows 8 Q4 2012 , Windows 9 (aka Windows Blue) Q4 2013. Do i need to say more?
And Microsoft will launch new Windows every year.To me seems like CoD series.Same sh*t every year with a little upgrade just to take your money. So im gonna stick with Win 7 for now.

Nah, Windows Server 2008. Vista without the bloatware and performance issues.

I like Windows 8. It's metro interface is really useful and it seems to run smoother and faster than Windows 7.
But for gaming I recommend u do get Windows 7. Idk why, but it's just... just better for games? I think so. Also, don't try Windows 8 if you play older games. By saying older, I mean released before 2000. Also some games crash when minimazing with metro interface (I mean when using windows button). I can say, that Steam version of Quake 1 (and mission packs), Oddworld pack games work well on Windows 8. After using Windows 8 for a while it's so weird to use Windows 7, like I do now. Everything seems... weird.
In short (I love long posts):
Win7 - gaming;
Win8 - if u don't play games all the time
and vista sucks
EDIT: I AM NOT SAYING THAT WINDOWS 7 IS WORSE THAN WINDOWS 8. I PERSONALLY LIKE METRO, BUT WINDOWS 7' RUNS OLDER GAMES LIKE TONY HAWK'S PRO SKATER 2.
oh, edit2: pc ver of win8 is cool, but the mobile one
sucks just like vista lel

Currently using 8. Playing all the same games as before. Doing all the same computer activities as before. Except now it starts up much faster with more windows shortcuts straight from the desktop. I rarely use the start menu in any windows, and so no change my UX there.
Just pick whatever you're comfortable using.

Hopefully your not one of those that will complain that things are not supporting XP when its an out of date OS.

I've recently changed to Windows 8 and it's really cool. Basically it's Windows 7 w/o the Start menu, faster loading times and with Metro(+Windows Store with it). I currently wouldn't change back and didn't face any gaming/compatibility issues. It still is a new OS and yeah it probably does still have bugs but Windows 7 wasn't that much of a difference the first few months either.
What you have to look for is if you like Metro or not and decide from there on :)

if you are able to get your hands on both discs, go windows 7 for a trial run as if you don't like it you can then put on windows 8 over the top of it and overwrite it, if you were to put windows 8 on first, the process becomes that much harder to rollback to windows 7 as it recognizes win7 to be "incompatible" to install over the top of.
