**Please take note this freebie is really a 365 day extended trial of AVG Internet Security 2014 instead of an actual one year license. In terms of features and protections, there are no differences between a trial and a real license -- you get all the same features, updates, and protection. The difference arises in who can install it. If you have used AVG Internet Security in the past, then you might not be able to install an extended trial and thus won't be able to get this freebie. (If you haven't used AVG Internet Security in the past, then you can get this freebie.)

Don't bother if you have Windows 7/8, just use Microsoft Security Essentials.

I support that too. MSE is quite good.

Not anymore. it used to be rather good but now it's among the worst. The only thing it is still good at is not giving you false positives. Even MS recommends using something else.

Did you scan your computer with other software to be sure, that you didn't catch anything? Like 10 years ago, I thought I don't have viruses, I didn't see any problems. Scanned - hundreds of infected files.

Don't. It used to be quite good but these past few months has really dropped in detection rate compared to other AVs.

MSE as a "free" security tool provided by Microsoft is the "quite good" antivirus. If I can download a small-sized, free antivirus which updates almost daily with new virus definitions, then YEAH; it still gets the job done.
But that's just on a "free security tool" scale.

I used to be a fan of AVG until I tried to uninstall the toolbar. The uninstallation program failed every time, and it literally had dozens of redundant save locations that would replace others as you deleted the folders themselves.

To be fair, not everyone has trouble with the uninstall program.

Not even gonna bother, I'm rather going to buy a new Bitdefender licence next week. AVGs detection rate is mediocre at best...

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Bitdefender sucks. If you want something free go MSE or Avira. If you want to spend moneyz, go Kaspersky.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Haha good joke. Bitdefender is constantly ranked between #1 and 3 in all tests.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Who cares about tests? The actual factor is you. Use which one do you feel comfortable the most. Security products don't have the same impact on everyone's computer. So whichever runs perfectly stable on your system, go for it. Bitdefender's UI is sluggish as hell, it gave me bsods on 2 computers and sometimes it switches to autopilot from user mode itself. Detection doesn't mean everything...

Also bitdefender has licensed their engine for like 4981874302 companies. And therefore, malware creators give this engine a top priority to bypass it, since nearly half of the market uses bitdefender engine right now.

And yet, Bitdefender still has the best day 1 protection of all av's...

AVG is pretty good. It's not the best in all aspects but then again none is. Avast is also good but this offer gets you the full suite for a year so, unless you have some special preference or are already using another full suite, I suggest you use it.

I'm bumping this thread because this user got anyone who got the free AVG to DL a virus. . . Their computers are zombies and the sit SharewareOnSale is under investigation for spam.

Other then that they are a huge hub for turning people's computer's into zombies. . . . even Gmail cannot send their E-mails to spam. . . anyone who clicked on the Free AVG this site turned my dummy PC into a Zombie. . . A heads up to anyone who par took. . . you may have to do a complete re-install. . . and good luck stopping the 5 times a day emails . . . I hope you used a dummy E-mail like me.

The last guy before me was smart cause it's the same damned thing. . only reason I know this my AVG fired up on my dummy PC to do a DDOS attack. . .

If you don't trust me. . . do a Google search on SharewareOnSale find one trusted site in the first . . 6 pages that isn't a cute paste copy of all the other sites. . . heads up to all who partook . . I didn't get hurt . . . make sure you don't this install is stealing your data.

AVG got installed on my pc by some other software a couple of months ago, not sure what it was as I'm usually quite careful and make sure that no extras are installed with the freeware I use. There was no way to uninstall it, remove browser plugins or get rid of it in any way. It increased to workload on my pc and I had no control over what it did. That quite simply fits the description of a virus.

I found out that I could use RevoPro uninstaller to remove it. Using the free trial I though I had cleaned my pc back then, until this afternoon when I found several folders related to the program in the windows temp folder, and a service still running. I had to stop the service and manually remove more than 20 entries in the Windows registry, plus a dozen folders and files scattered around.

Now I wonder if I got it cleaned for good, but kind of worries me knowing it could still be around.

Not an antivirus if you ask me, and most viruses are easier to remove than this junk.

Boot to Safe Mode.
Run MBAM & MBAR (Malwarebytes Anti-Malware/Rootkit), SuperAntiSpyware, Kaspersky Anti-Rootkit, OTL, and lastly ComboFix (sometimes this program cleans too much but I've never had a problem with it).

You'll probably have to reboot between.
