Inspired by games that should be movies

And for bonus points, what kind of game?

I reckon:

  • The Anne McCaffrey Dragonflight/pern series would make a spectacular new RPG.
  • Robert R McCammon's Swan Song (post apocalyptic fiction), would be a great adventure game, like the recent "the walking dead" games.
  • Game of Thrones: Sadly the studio that owns the rights already made a pretty terribad RTS and RPG. But imagine if the likes of Bethesda had the licence.. man, missed opportunity for an epic RPG.
  • You won't have heard of it but there's an amazing horror series called "Necroscope" by Brian Lumley, which would make a splendid horror themed, extremely mature RPG.

Red Storm Rising. Actually, it had a game...in 1988. But the setting is practically asking for osme great cold-war-era grand strategy title.

Also, screw "Game of Thrones;" The Pillars of the Earth is begging for a medieval RPG.

Do you think today's computers and today's game designers have what it takes to make Amber into a game?

I want a game based on Palahniuk's Pygmy. You can choose your pygmy, decide to either adapt to your host family or take them out, things like that.

... so will say Tomorrow When The War Began instead.

both good. i wouldn't call the road browser game an actual game. it doesn't do the book any justice.

The Hunger Games would make a neat single player game.

And they could also switch up the rules between each "game" for a bit of variety. And give the option of making your own character (including District background).

It would be amazing fun for a FPS style multiplayer deathmatch game :)
Minecraft already has a mod for this, and even that was hillarious last I played.

I would play the Minecraft map of this, if only I had friends to play it with :(
Also, I haven't touched Minecraft in quite a while. Don't think I could get used to all the new changes D:

The Mists of Avalon series in an RPG style. I know that there is already a King Arthur RPG, but Mists of the Avalon tells his story in the eyes of the women. The series, written by Marrion Zimmer Bradley, are some of my all time favorite books.

Là-Bas, with its numerous subplots of love affairs, black masses, Gilles de Rais, and whatnot, would make a lovely point-and-clicky. No, totally not like Gabriel Knight.

I think Bethesda would totally fail with Games of Thrones. They specialize in exploring RPG, where story and characters are in background (or even behind it). Just look at Skyrim and their Stormclocks vs Imperium with Dragons mixed in it, and how not important and invisible it is during most of the game (and let's not forget how easily heavily armoured and equipped Dark Elf can get to Ulfric Stormcloak, especially after hearing how bad they are treated in Windhelm...).

I don't even like Bethesda/Skyrim, used them as an example of a triple A studio. But you can't argue they'd do a better job than Cyanide!

I thought they made one from that. I know there are at least two or three Lovecraft video games, not including Cthulhu saves the world. I could be wrong about Mountains of Madness though

Heart of Darkness by Conrad would make a great adventure game...and so would many other Conradian novels.

Agreed.

Quite the opposite. There's not much going on in Heart of Darkness. It's a great novel but wouldn't make much of a game. If it was made, it'd have to be a short one.

I quite like short games so I wouldn't have a problem with it. Or they could just Hollywoodise it and add a whole bunch of crap.

Already a game of thrones game. After reading some of the first book, though, I don't see what the hype is about it. TO me, the writing just doesn't grab me.

Non-Stop by Brian Aldiss or The Integral Trees by Larry Niven.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I'm afraid part of the beauty of Non-Stop is that the reader isn't sure what exactly is going on for quite some time. This is something that the game would probably ruin, considering all trailers, cover info and previews... (BTW, in the US, some of the versions were published under a different name, which pretty much ruined it on its own. (It can be found in the book's Wiki article, but don't do it, unless you already know what the story is about.))

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah, the US title is a bit of a spoiler, but I don’t think that’s that big of a deal. You could come to more or less the same conclusion by reading the few first chapters. Besides, there are plenty of big surprises later on, and one could easily avoid mentioning them in trailers, previews etc.
