GOG is having a sale, and it includes a deal that they call Indie Piñata, that you pay $3 and get a random game.

From their FAQ:
What is the Indie Piñata?

Every Indie Piñata costs $3* and includes a random indie game that we think you should play. The Piñata can include games anywhere from ~$9.99 to ~$44.99, so we promise you'll get a deal every time.
(*or your local equivalent)
If you're looking for more games (or don't like surprises) we're also running a promo on a selection of indie titles. These are a separate batch of games from the ones you'll find inside the Piñata. We'll also rotate the promo and Piñata lineup after three days, just so that things don't get too stale.

How do I get my Piñata?

Each Piñata will be added directly to your cart, so go through the checkout to find out what you got. You can do this up to 25 times per cart.

What if I own all the games in the Piñata?

We're making sure that you only find games that you don't have yet. But if you already own every game hidden in the Piñata, we'll convert your spare copies to a gift.

So I can gift a Piñata?

Yes! You can send your friends a random game as well. Select "Gift This Order" during checkout and share the joy.

How long will the Indie Piñata promo last?

The Indie Piñata promo will last until 9/18/2015, 9:59AM GMT.

I tried it, and I got Shadow Warrior (2013), which I think was a good deal. :) If you buy it, please post below what you got, so people know what's available!

They had a headline about this, but it's been removed... So, the FAQ will have to do. :)

EDIT: Here is a list from the forums with a compilation of the possible games in the piñata. So, please, post if you get something that's not there yet. :) Thank you, rachellove!

EDIT 2: They're back with it. Here's the new list from the forums. Thanks, trentjaspar!

I've only ever played Dreamfall: The Longest Journey when it first came out. It's a fantastic game. I really should play The Longest Journey as well as Chapters...

Got Terraria (waste, as already have it in Steam) and Aarklash: Legacy in 2 tries. Not bad.

I've got FTL, which I don't own on Steam. It was cheaper, though. Still, nice :)

Now for me, I was thinking about the fact that for some of these games, the Humble store has had sale prices which are close to or cheaper than $3, and for many of the games sold through there, you get both a Steam key and a DRM-free version. So, on some of these I'm holding out for a Humble sale. For example, Randal's Monday was in the recent build-a-bundle, and that came with both, so for me that beats GOG's DRM-free only deal.

The two games I would buy in a second for $3 each are Dreamfall Chapters and Republique, neither of which has gotten a significant discount anywhere.

I got Aarklash Legacy. Looks like a quality game, but not one I'd really play other than to take it for a spin.
Would have loved République, Shadowrun Returns, Randal's Monday, Dust: An Elysian Tail, or Terraria.

So, is this a complete surprise game, that you don't know until after you've paid, or is the game revealed before you give the final approval of the purchase?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

you only find out about what game you get until AFTER you've paid >_<

Pretty good, but as I have everything bar 3 of those on Steam the chances are that I'd end up wasting my money.

If they did it with non Steam/GOG exclusive titles it would have been better for me personally although I can see how that wouldn't have necessarily had mass appeal. Might have had to wheel out some older, or more obscure games.

I gave it a go. I also got Shadow Warrior (2013), which I own on Steam. I should have seen that one coming. So I got another, and got Guacamelee. Guess what? Also own it! I think I'm done.

So if you buy 25 pinatas, are you guaranteed to get all 25 games (for $75)? Or can you get duplicates?

A big pass from me. Not because I own all the games already on steam but I'm not big on this random game nonsense. If it was an extra for spending x amount, sure but not to spend money out right for something I do not know and may not like.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah, generally speaking, I think it's not worth it. Not because the games themselves aren't worth it, but because you might end up getting something you already own in another platform and be stuck with it, as you can't give it away. :/

Agree... they offer to make it a gift if you already got that already. Why not as default... in case i'd get something i dislike although there are no real lemons in the list. would even help to promote their store if there are gifts floating around.

The whole thing doesn't seem worth the risk unless you want the majority of the games. Besides, Goodbye Deponia has been $3 before and Banished $5. The other standout in round 2 for me was perhaps Lichdom: Battlemage, but even that has been $5.19 before.
