Actually that's what hyperthreading does.. it's mostly intel tech.

this is what it looks with me... 4 cores.
WHat Windows are you using?

To put it in a nutshell, it creates 2 logical cores, that optimize the time that your processer is actually processing data.

in some cases, the bios disables some cores. mostly to save power,
sometimes that setting screws up and the automation of the powermanagement doesn't work properly anymore.
from my experience that happens a lot with laptops.

you should check your settings, mostly, try disabling energy saving stuff.
should help :)

^This
windows key + R then write down msconfig, then the boot tab, advanced options

Check device manager -> processors. How many positions u have there

Well I know from my old Asus p5k board that if I dicked around and turned either or memory mapping off or EHCI off the bios load screen would only show 2 cores, though windows would still use and show 4...
Alt you could have your boot settings changed.
run->Msconfig->boot->advanced options-> check if "number of processors" is ticked...

No, it does not add up. Just think of it as 2 cars going at 30mph carrying luggage instead of 1 car.

Yeah. Marketing men love to pull this one, as it makes even the most mediocre of processors sound like an absolute monster.
The number of times I've read adverts in our local newspaper offering me a desktop computer with a "12Ghz Intel chip"...
What? If I buy on of these for my grandma, will I be getting phone calls every evening to remind her how to work the liquid nitrogen cooling, because her PC won't boot up?

I got curious and went see mine...shows 8 graphs, the logical cores show too?

Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40 GHz, 2403 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 4 Logical Processor(s).
True quad core? Should I be happy with 4 graphs when other people have 8? lol....

Yes, it's a "true" quad core...we could also debate this since Q6600 is made of two E6600 dual cores which are "glued" together. That's also the reason why programs run faster, if they use just core 0 and 2 or 1 and 3 (cores are counted as 0, 1, 2, 3).

lol this thread have so much fails...i would reply each one, but i'm too tired for that. First of all, just Intel CPU's have logical cores; his Athlon is a real 4-core. Second - Athlon II X4 is the model name, the X4 is a part of the CPU name and if windows shows it, it doesn't mean the number of cores (so having an AMD A10 would mean you have 10 cores lol?).
For OP: Post a screen from CPU-Z Mainboard tab, so i can tell you what exactly you need to do in your bios to activate them all.

In this particular line of AMDs CPUs the nomenclature "X4" does refer to the CPU having 4 cores. Same as how X2 for certain AMD's dual cores, X3 for tri-cores. But ofcourse an A10 wouldn't have 10 cores as those are just their APUs, but I guess if someone came along with an untrained eye and made that assumption, they could end up making a bad purchase.

Hello everyone,
I'am pretty sure i have a 4-core computer, but when i open task manager it shows only 2 graphs...
Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) II X4 620 Processor 2.61GHz
And i thought i read somewhere that the X4 stands for 4-cores.
Picture from my task manager
Am i wrong? or am i overlooking something?
Gratz: FreeFury
Addional information: i use Windows 7 64 bit, and i need more CPu >:) (for PS2, which needs more CPU)
