Hey guys,

I'm pretty new on the site, but I have my steam since the beginnings (2006).
I have a few games that I would offer as gifts, but I don't know if they are "giftable".

How can I know that?

I read the FAQ which doesn't say anything apart from "your game should be a steam gift or a redeemable key".
I suspect all the games I have are not redeemable, but if something in your FAQ could explain this more simply...

Thanks a lot,
xgbi

You can NOT gift games that have been activated on your account, if that is what you mean. Only games you bought as gift and that have not been redeemed yet. (or retail Steam keys that have not been activated yet.)

:(

It might be interesting to put that into the FAQ.

It should be utterly obvious, especially to someone using Steam since '06.

Well I never quite got to the point where I wanted to give away one of my games, so I never looked at the ways to do that.

As I said in my post, I suspected that it was impossible, but I needed a confirmation :-)

It's not that steamgifts doesn't allow it. It is just impossible to gift games from your library on steam. It's a basic feature that Steam had since the beginning, and it has no place on the SG faq.

I'll disagree with the last sentence. The fact that it's a feature of Steam, not SG, doesn't necessarily mean that it shouldn't be a frequently asked (or rather answered) question. The main point of the FAQ is simply to prevent misunderstandings, and this is definitely one misunderstanding that does happen every now and then here.

that wouldn't be a misunderstanding, that would be an oblivious misconception. either way, it does not have much to do with SG

Well, from this thread, you see that it is a question of an SG member. Furthermore, from the irritated tone of people answering it, it looks like this is a fairly common question/misunderstanding/misconception/you-name-it. :-) I think the point of FAQ is to spare the community the need to answer/address the same things over and over.

In other words, if something helps (to reduce the amount of confusion or number of giveaways that are hastily being pulled back), why shouldn't it be used? Only because it is relevant not only to SG, but also to Steam gifting in general? :-)

You're right. It is very related to steam gifting. Perhaps it does deserve a spot in the FAQ.
Maybe the FAQ deserves an "absolute steam noob" section. And the first thing this section should clear up is that the gifts are not procured out of thin air by SG, but that the creator has to provide it. That's a misconception that is just too common.

I cannot even imagine how it isn't obvious, if it worked that way why wouldn't people just create an endless stream of gifts? Well at least that's what I would ask myself, I donno.

Well it kinda is common sense as you can not re-sell the Steam games on your account, so why would you be able to gift them?

Well apparently for some it's not. And considering we actually now have a digital service like greenman gaming, where you can sell your digital copies, it's not surprising some are confused about it.

So adding this to the FAQ and maybe even the image that snorkel posted: http://img850.imageshack.us/img850/8883/unledtgf.png can't really hurt anybody.
