It's one of them games where you can play for days and days, maybe even months on end and then take a disliking in it and stop playing but then feel like playing again a few months later then just repeating. It's really fun when you find the right server for yourself.

Personally I think Minecraft is an incredibly boring game. You build ugly stuff without any purpose just to look at it when you could instead (if you feel creative) create some really cool looking things in a 3d modeling app or a level editor to add them to your favorite game (where they fulfill a purpose). And gameplay...well, there is no gameplay, at least nothing that was not done a billion times better in other games. It's the most pointless and overrated game I've ever seen, in my opinion at least (obviously). But apparently tons of people love the game, so I guess it's certainly worth a try for you. Do they still have the free browser version? If so, try that one. If you think it sucks you won't like the full game either.

The only part that is not fun in a 3d modeling app is learning how to use it. And I guess that is where most people stop. Afterwards it is even more fun because unlike Minecraft the possibilities are endless and the final product can look a million times better than anything you could ever do in Minecraft. Plus you can port your creation into any cool game with modding tools, whether it's Portal or Counter Strike or Elder Scrolls or Unreal or thousands of other games.

Guy with the anime avatar, care to explain? I played Minecraft, and the official game modes at least don't offer anything but building (and 'surviving', which is a joke, plus pvp, which I'm sure is not exactly great either if you compare it to the millions of titles available that have pvp (didn't play it though)). If you're talking about mods, fine. I'm talking about the game itself.

I was talking generally, but you can play adventure maps for example, without mods, spleef without mods, pvp, hardcore, you can make in game redstone structures, etc, laying only survival or creative and also alone will be boring obviously. You didn't played enough to know :S. And talking about mods in servers you can play whatever you want Hunger Games, PvP Kits, Free build, creative, arenas, factions, minigames, wool race, time bomb, with mods obviously the possibilities are infinite. But again without mods you can still do really a lot of stuf, for example by playing co-op adventures maps, or another things made by other players.

If you play without mods, without any community made content, in single player only then no, it isn't worth it.
If however you are willing to look up and join the various multiplayer servers which offer plugins which provide new gamemodes or if you download the various adventure maps made by users to play single player then yes, the variety is worth that cost!
If you are willing you can also go further and look into the various mods that are available which expand the game into completely new territory then for any other game that has the same expandability you would be looking at paying a lot more.

I disagree with this. Even before a bunch of the new content (back when you didn't regenerate health without food) I found it worth the purchase even if you didn't go online. I can't imagine that the addition of pistons and everything since has diminished the value of what you can build in the game

Back at that point when you didn't regenerate health and food it was cheaper and matched the price however it has since gone up in price to what it is now and personally I don't feel that the cost increase matches the changes to the game itself.

Talking as someone with around 1k hours on minecraft, I would say hell yeah. People that say no either don't like the game or are just cheap.
