Hello everybody!

I've had this game on sight for quite some time, and I wanted to ask advice of this nice community. I love turn based strategy, the HOMM franchise is one of my favorites. I love strategy games where it doesn't depend on reflexes or moving the mouse faster and knowing by memory all the shorcut keys, but out-thinking your opponent and knowing what you're doing.

So, know that you guys know my taste in TBS games, what do you think? Will I be let down by this game, or is there a chance I'll like it?? ^^

UPDATE:

Thanks everyone for your help and comments ^^ I made my mind and buy it now that it's on sale!

Sounds like the perfect game for you. Loving the game so far, the hotseat function is a godsend.

As someone who has put several hundred hours into Civ 5, I'd say definitely. It's definitely a thinking game, and you have to plan to build your civilization according to your strengths/the type of victory condition you're aiming for.

Pick up the Gold Edition to get Gods and Kings though - the religion and espionage stuff adds a lot to the game IMO.

Don't buy it. It will consume your life.

I've played every single Civ game since they came out in 1991 and although Civ V may feel a bit simplified compared to the older ones, it makes for a faster, smoother game with less flipping through the civilopedia to figure out what to do next. Multiplayer is lots of fun. I enjoyed it and recommend it.

I find Civ V pretty fast to play, if you know what you're doing they all play pretty smoothly, but Civ V is more user friendly in my opinion. I have no desire to go back to IV after playing V.

Im also interested in getting CiV V, What would you say about these changes? Are they good or bad?

I played a small bit of CiV IV years ago & I tested CiV V on a friend's PC but I really dont remember anything. What I do remember though is not knowing what the hell I was doing in CiV 4 :P

Civ V is a little easier to jump into than the previous games, there's still a learning curve but I find it's not as steep. As I said a little earlier, after playing V, I have no desire to go back to the older games, so that's a good thing. :) If you start out on an easy difficulty while learning the ropes you should be fine.

Buy Civ5 GOTY! It's on of my favorite strategy games... It plays like a nice game of chess and its lots of fun! I really can't recommend it enough! Specially if you play it against friends (AI is great and all but nothing beats a good ol' nerd night with pizza beer and a civ5 lan)!

Yes. Even against the ai the game is fun. definitely long term play. I was poor when it came out and sank countless hours into the pirated version. Not so much once I owned it :$

If you decide to get it, make sure to get Gods & Kings as well. It makes the game much better.

Get the Civilization IV Complete Pack instead. Also, you'll probably enjoy Knights of Honor and the games from the Paradox Development Studio - Victoria, Crusader Kings, Europa Universalis (along with the Rome spin-off), Hearts of Iron and Sengoku. You also gave away Victoria II instead of playing it your self for some reason.

I gave it away because I knew I couldn't play it at the time, and somebody may have more fun with it. Besides, the learning curve for RTS games from Paradox is tooo high for me, and they are RTS, not TBS. I had the chance to play some HOI 3, and even though I greatly enjoy games like these, it envolves too much micromanagement for my taste. I might try it sometime later though ^^

I don't consider them RTS since most of the time spent playing is in paused mode. So more like simultaneous turn-based, only the player picks the length of the turn.

And they vary in micromanagement. Try EU or EU:Rome, they're supposedly the least complex. I started with Rome and found it not too hard to grasp.

No. Buy Civilization IV. It's MUCH better. Better gameplay, more complex, and very nicely modded by the community.
