Well, pay once actually -- much like Guild Wars.

Now I read many good things (along the lines "it's awsum!") about this one, but couldn't arrange a time slot to burn the precious three-day trial yet. Good to have the pressure lifted.

On a related note, a subs game going F2P usually means the game sucks, the subs are down and/or the company is going down. Discuss?

I've never played an MMO so I don't know what that means. I can't solo the game until the end?

You can solo until the endgame.

Considering this gets episodic expansions does each new episode have it's own endgame? I'd be interested in trying this as it's from Funcom and the world and story seems more interesting to me than the usual orcs and dragons fantasy stuff every other MMO has.

But I'm a single-player kinda guy so can't be bothered with the clan/guild stuff that MMOs usually have.

A game going f2p doesn't mean it sucks, it means they can make more money off micro transactions than subs.

How is that even close to F2P?

It's actually B2P, but it is F2P as in it used to require a subscription fee and now it doesn't.

Aye. I wasn't familiar with the term B2P when I posted this.

The game is from a Norwegian developer and I'm living in Norway currently.
From what I've read in the news when it was first released people were saying the story and atmosphere of the game was brilliant but the combat system clunky and nothing special compared to other games in the genre.
Not sure if the combat system has since been changed though nor have I played the game.

Yeah. Some people posted cutscenes from both GW2 and TSW to contrast the writing in story and dialogue (GW2=awful, TSW=awsum).

But can the good writing make up for crappy gameplay? We'll see.

The writing, story, atmosphere and investigation missions in Secret World blow all other MMO's out of the competition.

The weakness is the combat since the engine is almost 10 years old (game was in development for 10 years), PvP is also pretty weak, but I never was much of a PvP fan so I'm biased in that opinion.

Cutscenes and writing is way better than GW2, you could compare it to scenes from TV series, they put a lot of effort into dialogue and animations.

Dunno which version you're playing but I'm paying through the nose with all the subs and still having to pay for micro- and macro-transactions to be able to progress. The worst kicker is the single character slot and no character creation system though.

Difficulty level is determined randomly during character creation and there are no re-rolls. So unless you get a lucky rare drop...

actually you sort of do respawn, you just switch to another instance of reality where your life is just that little bit shitter.

I dont get it, how many freaking MMORPGS they want to release - realise that they lack of players and move into this pay2win system...

I mean we are SO MANY FU CKING GAMERS out there. But hell, when there are 578755454151544554455445 online games where the fuck are we supposed to focus. No wonder that WoW is such a success, wow came out first with its wide open world and lots of things to do. Everything else is just a copy.

Kind regards

WoW just came out after copying other better games, then they got marketing right and all the idiots went to play it. Sad story for MMORPGs really :(

My point was more like, the first big 3D MMORPG, announced with TV commercials, endless space for players to choose from where they want to play and stuff like that...

Else I would like to have an example which mmo was able to offer that before.

Games going F2P doesn't always mean the game sucks. There has been lots of articles and discussions within the industry about how gaming has changed and the subscription model isn't working as much as it used to any more. F2P seems to be what people want but people instantly assume F2P = Pay2win but that is not always the case. A lot of F2P mmos have micro transactions for purely cosmetic stuff or stuff you can actually find in the game but are too lazy to get it. Even then its not the high end gear etc. But don't get me wrong, there are lots of games that are pay2win and I avoid them like the plague ;)

I'll have a look into this though always nice to try things firsthand and form your own opinion :D

Subscriptions should die. They were there for a reason once, when the internet was young and the developer needed the sub fee just to stay afloat. Now its just money grabbing. The maintenance and upcost of the game is well below the sub cost. I have a feeling WOW will never get rid of its sub. its just racking in the cash too much. Buy 2 Play is the way to go.

I'm conflicted about this. I really like the game. Played all through the beta but couldn't afford to play on the subscription system. I'm going to get it now but I hope this doesn't mean that it's losing people or that it's going down.

I played the beta, it was quite fun. When I found out it's gonna have a monthly sub I said right there, not gonna last long with it. Game is good but not THAT good. Looks like I was right :P Might actually pick it up now.

Probably because they figured out that it's a fucking stupid idea? I don't care what people say about WoW or other "good" MMORPGs, monthly subscription after you have "bought" the game is absolute bs. But, then again, people were still willing to throw their money at it, so what the hell do I know about marketing...? -.-

Funcom, the developers of TSW are doing badly, financially speaking. TSW was meant to help with that, but it didn't do as well as expected, so they're changing the subscription plan to a F2P+cash shop, to appeal to more people and keep the game, if not the company, afloat.

So..it's a mix of subs going down and company going down, really.

The game doesn't suck, nor is Funcom in any kind of trouble. They've realized something by watching Guild Wars 2. Subscriptions are failing as a business model. The current economy can't sustain it, and people can't afford to shell out $60 for a new game, plus $15 a month just to get to PLAY it. Subscription is now OPTIONAL. Subscribers are given in game cash for vanity and convenience items. As someone that paid for this in pre-order, I couldn't be happier to know that I can finally enjoy the game where I couldn't afford to before.
