Merry christmas everyone! long story short, i have added 10 euros into my steam wallet and so far added:
Divine divinity
Beyond Divinity
Lionheart legacy of the crusader
Arcanum
Into my shopping cart.
I have 4 euros spare and would like to hear if any of you pals have any recommendations of what else could i add to the cart, isometric RPG would be ideal, but not the diablo style. Or maybe there is a good (under 4 euro) deal on AAA title someone has picked up and wants to share? i have seen just cause 3 for 4,49, but iam 50 cents short XD

But these games look amazing, will definitely keep an eye on them next time i will want to update my library.

Baldur's Gate is unmissable, one of the best RPGs ever made, but you might want to try the classic version, not the Beamdog abomination they sell on steam.

They replaced the original videos (with still images) and character models (with the ones from the 2nd game). Also many small issues that were present haven't been fixed.

I was initially against them but now I wish they'd done the rest, and the ones in the second game too. But If the new ones really bother you, just use the Classic Movies mod.

I have both games on CD :)
They should have implemented 1920x1080 resolution and leave everything as it was. Also I don't like the fact how they advertise themselves as "developer" of the game which they aren't.

Well yes, they are not developer of the games but lot of old Bioware guys now working at Beamdog :p

It is a ton of fun (nice dialogue and map exploration missions), but I remember it having a bug in the first big quest that makes it impossible to proceed....it's that messed up. You enter a cave, clear it, then exit. Talk to an NPC to get to the next quest. But if you keep on entering the cave and exploring, eventually the NPC disappears and you get stuck.

Aarklash: Legacy is a nice Dragon Age: Origins style RPG. It's relatively new but quite cheap, if you like party-based RPGs this one is a little indie gem (be aware, though, that from my experience the pause feature is fundamental even at normal difficulty).

This. As a spoiled millennial, I quit Fallout 1 the first time I played because the mechanics seemed quirky for me, later I went into it taking in account that the combat system is kind of an XCOM with the grids and such and it was a blast. Also, Fallout 2 is the best post-apocalyptic RPG ever made.

Well, more like super annoying sometimes, especially since in their infinite wisdom they made fast travel a seven-step quest and the terrain is tailor-made to piss you off since sometimes it takes half an hour to cross a 10-meter gap.

I am playing the game now and enjoying it, but the entire map is suffering from an unrealistically massive dose of overdesign because the map designers were really happy that they had the most time in the team it seems.
I am not even annoyed by the terrible user interface, jut how ridiculously long it takes me sometimes to reach a map marker as I always run into some stupid ravine, river, or colossal mountain range I need to get around the looooooooooooong way.

Yeah, but even the combat can be irritating. Even when stealth killing, you could still possibly be caught by the other guy(s) that you didn't even know were there.

Combat is easy since the AI is dumb as a sack of bricks. I actually got several full sets of technomagi armours in the starting district simply by sneaking up, backstabbing, then running a few meters and hiding in a bush. As long as they do not gang upon you (like those godsdamn fucking techrot zombies that can teleport around) or suddenly turn into sharpshooting goods (like apparently every bandit type), you are good.
Also, axes seem to be the safe bet. They have slightly lower backstab amount in total, but at least they do not chip away 0.000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001% damage on normal hits like daggers and swords…

Doubtful, it is still UE4. Even my R9 380X screams sometimes, and I usually play games in 1600Γ—900 low/mid graphics, windowed (or 1776Γ—1000 if they finally realised why people love that resolution).

Spears are probably fine, but is has been ages since I found one. Found a ton of techno axes though. Sweet 65 base damage. :3

While shadowrun returns is cool, it's the lesser game of the trilogy, it's sequels dragonfall and hong kong are miles better

Wasteland 2
And while they're new and probably out of your budget you should consider Tower of Time and Pillars of eternity 2 for the future.

Planescape Torment (1999)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Let's go through the obvious ones first :)

  • Fallout 1 and 2

Frequently cited among the best rpg games of all times, immense cultural relevance even after Bethesda's attempts to turn the series into a post-nuclear-Sims

  • Any of the Infinity engine games - Baldur's Gate 1 and 2, Icewind Dale, Planescape Torment

Unless you are a purist, the Enhanced Versions are just fine :) Many, many hours of exploration and adventure await!

  • Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura

One of the best cRPGs I've ever played, and a game I frequently come back to. And while not isometric, I would highly recommend Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines (with the fan patch added), in case you've never played it

  • UnderRail

A more recent title which pays homage to the early Fallout games - a lot to do, but some sections can be tedious, and the combat is hard.

  • The Age of Decadence

Similar to Arcanum, this is like the European-art-house answer to BioWare's Dragon Age, though ironically both games were made in Canada. Branching quest lines, well-written dialogues, unique class options, many secrets, VERY hard combat, and a game where choices actually matter. Cannot recommend this enough, and at 3.99 right now it's a great deal!

  • Pillars of Eternity / Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire

While many refer to them as the spiritual successors to Baldur's Gate, Obsidian's PoE saga is somewhat easier on the lower difficulty settings, and not as well written, though the sequel does improve on that. Still, both are well crafted and beautifully rendered games that deserve all the praise they've gotten.

  • Tyranny

Also by Obsidian, and preferred by many over PoE due to its darker tone, original concept and setting, and excellent quest lines. Keeping my hopes up that we see a sequel one day.

  • Torment:Tides of Numenera

A lot to read in this Kickstarter-funded cRPG by inXile that draws inspiration from the original Planescape Torment and has received praise from fans and critics alike, despite underwhelming sales.

  • Wasteland 2: Director's Cut

Also developed by inXile, this sequel to one of the original post-apocalyptic epics offers many hours of gameplay, though it might take you a while to get used to its systems.

  • Divinity: Original Sin 1 / 2

A continuation of the Divnity series that has many, many fans, though I personally find it unbalanced and poorly designed at times. Regardless, it's considered to be one of the best cRPGs in recent years, and is a must-play if you are a fan of the genre.

Here are a few others worth taking a look at:

  • the Shadowrun series (as others said, Hong Kong and Dragonfall are better)
  • the Avadon series
  • the Avernum series
  • the Konung series
  • Inquisitor
  • Kult: Heretic Kingdoms
  • Dungeon Rats (The Age of Decadence combat-oriented spin-off)
  • Lionheart: Legacy of the Crusader (which also used the Infinity engine, but had little to do with Black Isle)
  • Expeditions: Conquistador and its sequel Vikings - turn-based isometric RPGs with a lot of historical flavor
  • Hard West Complete Edition is a bargain at just 4 euros, a dark-magic infused version of the Wild West with some interesting strategies involved
  • The Red Solstice - tactical squad-based RPG based on Mars, currently 1.49

If you want to try Action RPGs similar to Diablo - Path of Exile (free to play, constant updates and a LOT to do), Grim Dawn, Victor Vran, Titan Quest, The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing, Torchlight 1 / 2
New releases:

  • Atom RPG (post-apocalyptic Fallout-inspired game set in the Soviet Union)
  • Pathfinder: Kingmaker (Kickstarter-funded project based on the popular board game and tabletop license)

Aside from the new one (Atom RPG, added to my wishlist...) I think I have purchased (and re-purchased) all of them, but finished how many? :(

Umm... Fallout 1, maybe 2 but I forget.... :( Baldur's Gate 1, Icewind Dale, Planescape: Torment, and I think that's it. Sigh. Feels like I should just stop buying RPGs... :)

Fallout, Fallout 2, and Septerra Core are all good oldschool isometric RPGs and are rather inexpensive.

However, if you like older than oldschool and very hard RPGs, I'd suggest the original Exile series by Spiderweb (not the remakes on Steam, they're rather watered down in comparison) that can be downloaded for free from their website here: http://www.spiderwebsoftware.com/productsOld.html

They're dos based though and it may take some work to get them to run on newer OS.

Well, yes and no. The only one's that are in an actual order are Ys 1 and 2 (they were originally supposed to be one game). Ys Origin is the prequel to those two, and should be played after the first two. That's about the most direct continuation in the series. There are a lot of callbacks in later games to certain events and characters, but every other Ys game is a self-contained story. It's basically a new adventure for the protagonist.
For example, the one I linked to is the remake of Ys 3. But the next one, Ys 4, or Memories of Celceta (the remake of it) takes place before Ys 3. And the later games jump around chronologically as well.
