I press start > Shut down > (PC is shutting down)

And it just stands there for 1 hour... then I have to unplug the PC... any Ideas?

try disable the auto updater...if you windows isn't genuine. (btw, my definition of a "genuine" windows is a product developed by MS and not some fake copy that just looks like it)
that's why the updater might be stuck. (some updates are being installed while the computer is shutting down)

i really hope, that this does not resolve your issue, capt'n greedy.

Are you okay though? x___x

Windows being genuine or not means if they are legal or pirated, not IF THEY WERE DEVELOPED BY MICROSOFT x_x

Since it's "not genuine" I'd say that is part of your problem. With Windows 8 being so cheap when it was released I don't see why anyone would run pirated copies.

theirs lots of reasons, some good some not but windows 8 being free wouldnt make me want to install it from what ive seen even if i didnt have a legit copy of win7 which i do, for instance you cant buy windowsxp anymore but some people me included prefer it so thatd be a reason to run a pirated copy if you wanted it on a new machine/new to you machine

Something might be wrong with your HDD, either scan it for malicious software or defrag it.

Look at your task manager before / during the shut down process. Look for something hanging around that it might not be able to close automatically (like lingering, unfinished installers or updates in progress).

I hate it when you unplug your PC, and it stays on.

I had a laptop freeze once while forcing my brother to listen to "Friday". It was horrible, I had to unplug it and then remove the battery. My laptop died soon after that.

I have a weird variation on this problem, lol.

Windows shuts down and all but my PC doesn't turn off... if you understand what I'm trying to say. I opened it up and checked the PSU and mobo cables but they're all plugged in right.

And I have genuine Win7.

That may be a problem with your MOBO. I had that problem, I googled my MOBO model name and found people had the same problem and found out that the firewire port was causing it. Disabling the firewire port (since I don't use it anyway) in the bios solved the problem.

I dont know if anyone has mentioned this, but you really dont need to unplug your PC, and you really shouldn't, it can do damage. Just hold down the power button for a few seconds and it will do a "hard reset". If that doesn't work, theres a switch on the back of the PC, near the power cable, flick that to turn off the power.

As for your issue, the first step would be to check if you have any viruses or malware. Then use task manager to see what programs are running when you try to shut it down, something there might be preventing the shut down, although quite unlikely. You could always try a system restore too, to restore your PC to a previous date when everything was working.

Yeah, like it makes that much of a difference between unplugging the cable and switching the button on the PSU. :P

I only mentioned that as a last resort, if the hard reset doesn't work. TBH, if the PC is at that point, its already damaged and probably doesn't make much difference anyway.

It definitely sounds like a PSU problem.

You should replace it.
