Planescape Torment is easily better.

Still a great game tho.

I have to agree. Gothic 2 was AMAZING. I've had some issues starting it on a newer computer though. So be aware of that when you buy it (I guess you can always refund if you have issues). Nonetheless, I do think the game is worth $2 for sure!

I think I would enjoy the Gothic games and I do own all of them but when I tried to play Gothic 1 through steam it did not work...then I spent about 45mins trying mods/patches/config tweaks which did get the game to run but the game text was unreadable, I think i tried everything and eventually had to give up :(

Yeahhh those older games really suck with new systems. Even fallout 3 has problems with anything past windows vista

Here's a guide to get Gotic working on modern hardware and OS.

Pfft, I own a physical, GOG and Steam copy. I guess I could get several GOG or Steam accounts but that seems a bit wasteful. I'm not sure I'd be able to find another physical copy either :P

I've played this game a lot but I can't remember anything about the story for some strange reason. I think I may have picked it up too soon though because I hear that the DLC are where the real quality and value are and I don't think I've played any of them

Not DLC but expansions, and even they just scratch the surface. The real value is in the modding toolset and the countless hours spent in various player-created worlds, campaigns, and scenarios.

Yes, of course, you are right. I forget that there's a time before DLC. I really should revisit this game at some point :)

With mods it can actually look pretty decent for a 15 year old game. I got it to work on W7/10.

While what you say is true I can't understand why so many posts that video as an example of looking good.

Edit: Also that's Gothic, not Gothic II. This is how Gothic II looks with graphics mods :)

I've been trying to play two similar games from the same era: Elder Scrolls III Morrowind, and Gothic 2.
I haven't really started yet, but I gotta say that Gothic 2 is easier to play. Can't go wrong for less than $2

Gothic 2 with the Night Of The Raven expansion is pretty good, but the ending just doesn't live up to the game. Gothic 1 & 2 are still two games that are milestones of RPG development, but a lot has happened since their release. For 2-3 $ or € it is a no-brainer to pick them up and play them even in 2017. Getting them to play nicely on Windows 7/8/10 can be a bit tricky though.

"Literally no excuse"

With a salary less than 135 $ per month most games even on sale seems expensive

Nope. Risen was better for me

I remember trying the original Gothic like 8 years ago and absolutely hating it. I also didn't enjoy Risen very much, which is supposed to be a Gothic clone or something.

So I'm leaning towards no, unless this game is a huge improvement over its predecessor

It's actually very different, but if you didn't like Gotic at all I doubt you'll like Gothic II

The strong parts of the Gothic series are immersion, role play, and story.

Gothic 2 is incredible, but it REALLY helps to have played the first game.

Yes, my favourite RPG. Gothic 2: Returning 2.0 is the best hard core mod for this game (many new quests, locations and HD textures included)

It's $2.49 in the states, unless they changed the price.
