Several days IMO, but I only do a week or more for my events. My shortest giveaways still tend to be around a day.

I would base it on either popularity of the game and/or price. The more popular or pricey, the longer the giveaway should run. But it is all up to ones own personal preference. 1-2 days is about best for anything though.

*edit There is also a 7 day grace period at the end of the giveaway that should also be taken into consideration for the transaction to complete. Although in most cases everything happens within a few hours.

Like Adam said, it depends on you. Personally, if it's a puzzle, I'd like to keep it open for a week or longer. If it's a general giveaway, I'd keep it open for 2 days or more.

I understand that people are busy with life and don't always have time to log in, so I usually do a week just to give everyone a chance to see my giveaway and enter if they choose to. In my opinion, a day or less seems too soon to end a giveaway (unless you're looking to do a quick giveaway event). It's really up to the creator though.

I do one month for group puzzle giveaways. Other puzzles and most group giveaways one week. Fast event giveaways one day.

For public giveaways I go with either 1-hour for a fast one, or 24-48 hours so people in every time zone have a chance to join in. For private giveaways, I usually ad a few days to give a chance to people to actually find it and maybe come back later if they're low on points.

public/group giveaways - 1-24 hours, forum/ groups with really few members - 1-3 days, puzzle giveaways - 1-7 days, giveaways for Steamgift Gold/Platinum package purchasers - 1-2 days (they get notification on their mail and phones anyway).

As long as at least one person has time to join, there is no reason for a specific length other than altruism. I usually work around my own schedule, since I still have to send the damn thing...

It depends on what giveaway it is. IMO, for public enough 1-2 hours, for group giveaway - 2-3 days, and if this is a puzzle giveaway (not easy one) - a week or more is fine.

For something very very cheap I usually use 1-3 hours, for something a bit better around a day, for puzzle around 3 days (I usually put the start time at "now" and set the ending at the time convenient to me so the time varies).
