I had a crazy idea, and I was wondering if anyone else has already thought of it.
What would you say to a Steam Group, where people might be able to participate in weekly(-ish) tournaments, wherein the top five or ten competitors would win a link or a "ticket" to a giveaway?
Whoever offers the giveaway could nominate any Steam game with some kind of leaderboard function, and specify the time limit, whichever rules they chose to enforce, and how many "tickets" were available for their chosen giveaway. They would then create an Invite Only giveaway on Steam Gifts, and send a private message/email to the winners with a link to it.
Whaddya think? Does that sound cool?
I just love trying to beat leaderboards. And I think it would be more fun if there was something to win for it. And giveaways would be more fun if you felt like you earned them.

If this thread gets a decent response, I suggest a Dirt Rally league for our first giveaway. It's a great game, but I'm getting a little tired of the AI being a bunch of infallible gods, and desire some worthless human opponents.

Oh, you're only here for the giveaway?
Fair enough.

EDITED for clarification.

No.
To be honest, I'm just here for the giveaway.
Hey! Where is the potato option? Oh. Nevermind. I found it. It is this one. This is the potato option.

I've seen it before, but I haven't been able to participate :p

Sounds like a fun idea, honestly. I think a lot of people would be left out depending on which games were chosen though.

Yeah. That's true. But if we picked games that have been bundled, or games that have just appeared in a bundle, I'm sure we'd get a lot more people that had a copy kicking around.

You could instead pick free games, it doesn't even have to be on steam. There are loads of flash game websites that already have leaderboards.
This way anyone can join.

We used to have trivia in the chat of the Steamgifts group which worked just like your idea. We would all try to get points and end up on the Top 10. Everyone in the top 10 would get the invite to the giveaway that was sponsored by someone from the community mostly.
Your idea isn't bad but requires several people to own the same game, which makes it hard considering how difficult it can be sometimes to even find someone to play in my own friendslist.

Haha. I was kinda thinking more like games with leaderboards. Asynchronous competition.
That way, you don't have to hear anybody's whiny voice, and never have to organise for anything to happen at the same time.

Would require a lot of work and special ideas to make it work properly so that the usual faults won't be too pressing.
Don't have any ideas to fix those pressing problems though.

Anywho Enjoy the free bump.

Tough to organize and verify (depending on the game). If it's multiplayer there's the issue of lag so maybe something turnbased is more suitable for participants from different regions/timezones.

Yeah, as I've said above. It's mainly leaderboard type games I'm thinking of. Anything you can compete in asynchronously.
