Watch Let's play video's (with someone talking and reviewing throughout the game)
Watch a whole game without any commentary
Watch just a little spoiler free gameplay with someone talking throughout the game
Watch just a little spoiler free gameplay without any commentary
Just play the games yourself

Not really into let's plays, I'd rather just play the game myself. One exception I have youtubed a couple games that have multiple endings and I didn't feel like replaying the entire game.

No, I actually played through that one a few times. Most recent one I can think of is Late Shift.

Yeah that's probably smart. The Stanley Parable is one of the best games I've played and more fun to play yourself. :D
Added Late Shift to my wishlist, looks fun to play!

I do the same thing as well. Played through Mass Effect once and then got the rest of the story from youtube.

Can you name a few good visual novel games? I usually find I'd rather play more then watch. Or do visual games actually have a lot of game play in them?

I never usually watch a 'let's play' because I want to watch the game—it's more if there's someone pretty hip doing their thing.

Define pretty hip, who would fall into that category?

I prefer watching people playing a game and commenting in it. Can be the game and it's quirks itself, the industry or life in general.
LPs where there's no feedback from the player are kind of boring for me.

If you are going to talk, talk the minimum and don't spoil. Fucking 'let's play' are fucking stupid

It's just about what different people want to watch. Different styles of playing games gives people more options and variety. I'm not big on let's plays, but I think each approach have their place.

If I am interested in playing a game I will not watch any videos of it because I want to enjoy it and not spoil anything.

If I really enjoyed a game and want to see other people experience, enjoy it, and see their reactions, I will watch let's play videos after I have completed the game. I only watch let's plays if the person is talkative and explains what they are thinking as they play. I also only watch blind let's plays so I can see them experience the game for the first time. If I get any hint that they know what is happening or have played the game in the past, I stop watching and find someone else.

I know what you mean. I have one that I really like to watch, and usually it's blind gameplay, it is indeed fun to see the reactions.

Antichamber is my most watched. It is one of my favorite games of all time and being a puzzle game that does things differently from other games, it is fun to watch and see peoples thought processes, how they solve the puzzles, and their reactions. I have probably watched around 20 complete let's plays of this game.

My second most watched game is The Cat Lady. It's another one of my favorite games. I like to see how people react to the story. Probably watched around 8 or 10 let's plays.

I haven't watched multiple let's plays for many other games. I have seen a few for Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons and The Novelist.

There's so many games out there, you just added a few more to my wishlist :D.
Brothers is definitely one to watch blind. Antichamber looks very interesting, didn't know about that game.

I forgot Life is Strange. It's another one of my favorite games of all time and one that I watched a couple let's plays of. I watched the entire game in the let's play from ChristopherOdd because I enjoy his videos and wanted to see it all, but it is a bit long to watch over and over so I skipped through other let's plays just to see their reactions at certain parts.

Edit: And Eidolon. Some people may find this game boring, but I enjoyed it a lot and have watched every let's play I could find of it. There are not many and most do not play the game for very long. Miasmata is a similar game that I enjoyed a lot, but may not be for everyone. I have not watched many let's plays of this game though. Sometimes I just like relax, shut the real world off, and explore in the woods :)

I only ever watch gameplay videos to look at a game I have doubts about before buying it, so I don't have strong preferences about commentary.
I've seen some good commentary that makes it more clear what goes on with an occasional funny remark and I've seen some bad commentary with random unfunny jokes and lots of giggling and not much sense with respect to the game being played.
In any case, I chose the "Just play the games yourself" option.

Yeah the "just play yourself" is rather popular and kinda logical, I should've probably left it out :D.
I usually check the games before buying too, but it is difficult to find good reviewers .

When I couldn't afford games I would watch TheRadBrad because he is pretty chilled out and decent at playing.

If I had to watch a VN which I doubt I would, it would have no commentary or someone like this guy narrating it.

Here is a fantastic reviewer

I only watch let's plays when I'm stuck in the game, so I can see how someone else passes the thing I can't pass ; or when I want to see what a game is really like because I'm hesitant to buy it or add it to my wishlist. Otherwise I have no interest in Let's Plays.

It all depends on what game it is and who's commentating. There's a lot of games I wound never watch before beating them myself first and some which I don't like playing but enjoy watching (some horror games for example). When it comes it commentary there are a lot of factors, but basically it needs to be entertaining by itself and feel natural, not forced.

Depends on the game ... if its a story driven one but i found the gameplay borring i rather watch a no comment video of it on youtube .

If its something with choices that have lasting effect i would like to hear what was the tough process of the LP guy behind picking them.

It just comes down to how bad the core gameplay of the game is and how interested i am in the story :P

other then that if you are doing LPs with commentary it all comes down to the personality .... you can be MLG at the game and geuninelly funny guy ... but if the personality doesnt click with wide audience ... the content will unfortunatelly flop

Yeah this is a good example. I like how there's no one talking trough the gameplay. But perhaps it also makes a difference if there is a lot of voice acting in the game or not.

My problem with letsplays that they are long for games I'm not interested in, and if I'm interested in a game I either played it, or want to play in the future. So my pick is "Watch just a little spoiler free gameplay with someone talking throughout the game" - like a 15min video about impressions and general opinion, while spoiler-free video shows fun parts, liked parts or mechanics.

I don't like LPs (so I voted for "play the games myself") but I like to watch speedruns and / or challenge runs now and then. Although I usually mute the videos as most youtubers have horrible voices or say irrelevant things.

I usually want to play the game myself (and without major spoilers in advance!) but I watch some lets play videos on Youtube from time to time. Most of the time it is for a game which I can't get (console exclusives), older game classic or just don't feel like buying. For example Bloodborne is one nice example; it won't be coming to PC and yet I am still interested in the lore and story. Actually I have watched multiple playlists of that game since different players react differetly to it and find interesting new things which previous didn't ^^

Heilurmes mentioned I Have No Mouth which I too have watched and never played (though I remember seeing review for the game back when it was released and was sure to buy it with my older brother later on... which we never did :( ). The game has really interesting things going on through the story and at least the player which I watched took the game really well and pondered over the things and what was yet to come.

That is indeed a good reason to watch :). I also watch games that I probably wouldn't buy myself.

In order of preference:

  1. Speedrun
  2. Full 100% longplay with no yapping over
  3. Fresh-play let's play with real commentary instead of an "I'm so much better than pewdipie than this and I am so showing it" acting

Glitchy speedruns can be incredibly awesome to watch (when they don't just skip 80% of the game)

I watch some Twitch and play the games. That's about it.

For the most part I never watch Let's Play, speedruns... anything really.
However, if I'm really on the fence about a game, I might watch someone play it for a few minutes.... unless they are talking cause then it kinda ruins it for me.
After all, I am there for a view of the game... not some obnoxious/loud/squeaky/insert random annoyance here.... person who thinks they are funny..... more often then not, they aren't.
Soooooo, I'll say, Just play the games yourself. It is sadly how a lot of my purchases turn out to be a waste of money. Just shrug and move on.

I really dislike streaming in general. If I have the time to watch a stream, I have the time to play the game, which is far better than watching it through someone else's perspective. I am fond of reviews and videos where there is an actual discussion of a game, but looking at other people playing is just depressing, frankly, even if I don't have the hardware to run the game myself.
Sure, I could watch it for a few minutes, but just to evaluate whether it's something for me or not.

Some games are definitely more fun to watch than play. (fallout new vegas was like that for me for some reason)

Generally I dont watch Lets plays, the only one I sometimes watch is Gopher, who introduced me to modding my games...
