You can use Steam Desktop Authenticator or WinAuth if all you want is to have the authenticator.

You should use WinAuth it's much better than SDA.

Not if you have an Android device and want to use both the convenience of a desktop authenticator when at your computer and a mobile authenticator when not.. SDA can import your credentials from an Android device by putting the device into developer mode and connecting it to the computer with a USB cable. WinAuth can do this too, but unless they have fixed this since I last checked, WinAuth requires you to root the device and manually copy the files if you want to use both.

This is not possible with SDA either (without root), unless you downgrade steam app to insecure version, which is probably more troublesome than rooting itself.

WinAuth > SDA all the way.

I don't remember it asking for a phone number, it only asks for the authenticator activation code sent in SMS.
