I enjoyed it. 70 minutes of wandering around, sure, but nice atmosphere.

It's a cool game, I like Dear Esther more though.

Alright, I understand that that you may not have liked Gone Home and you have all the rights to say so, but I also have a right to say that I liked it. You shouldn't say "it's garbage" or abuse people just because they like something you don't. It's really immature.

It is, however, anomalous that there's such a wide gap between "official" Metacritic rating and users' rating. One might suppose there's an artificially generated hype around the game. For it propagates "correct" views. Just like the abomination called Conchita Wurst.

You're too young. Here's why age matters in Gone Home (by my favority blogger Shamus Young).
PS: I have yet to play it, not sure I'll like it, given my age bracket ;-)

I liked it. Not GOTY like "professional" reviewers scream it is, nor worth $20, but I thought the story and method of story-telling were nice. It kinda hit close to home (terrible choice of words there lol) with me, so maybe that's why I found it touching. I also went in knowing it was a walking simulator as opposed to a traditional game and treated it as such.

I beat it in 11 minutes first run through without having seen any gameplay of it prior. Of what I heard it was really pretentious and seemed to just cheaply cater to nostalgia.
And don't tell me I'm just not patient enough, or was expecting something else, I've played plenty of VNs and this shit was just badly written.

Sorry, but if you finished this in 11 minutes you rushed it to the extreme.
Complaining about it being badly written cant be taken serious, you cant have read the whole story.
Even if you played it again after finishing first, the whole tension buildup to the imo surprise ending goes to waste.
You might have played plenty of VN's but this proves you have no idea about how to play them.

I didn't purposely rush it, I just looked around, found a hidden area that anyone with half a brain could see light up if you even look remotely in it's area from across half the room.
And in no way is this game a VN, this is a 1st person looker, a walking simulator, a puzzle game without puzzles. Visual Novels are novels, not some half assed note-finding garbage on par with the likes of Slender mixed with an audiobook written by the most horrible of "90s kids".
And anyone who knows jack shit about VNs knows that choices are what make them unique, that is what makes your experience different from just reading a book or watching a movie, you can fuck up, you can get a bad ending, and that makes getting the true end just that much sweeter.
This game has none of that, it is the equivalent of leaving a series books all around your house and thinking "oh shit where'd I put that next one?"
So no, I didn't "experience" the whole thing, because from even the trailer, you could see that half-assed twist coming from a mile away, and I wasn't about to subject myself to horrible 90s kid bullshit..

Everyone's excuse for it being a shitty game is "No, it's a visual novel, don't judge it on gameplay judge it on the story" when it's not even a visual novel, the gameplay is shit, and the story rides entirely on nostalgia and angst.

All it is is someone trying to make games "intelligent", and failing to actually make a "game" at all.

This is what happens when people make a pandering game trying to appear "deep and intellectual".

A lot of 90s nostalgia, a decade I grew up in. For me a trip down memory lane, had a few laughs as well.
The ending was ok, I didnt see it coming.
Its a short but nevertheless very nice game imo. Not in my top 25 of all time favourites but it aint bad.
Overpriced though

"It sucks." isn't a very elaborated opinion. It doesn't tell us why it sucks. On the other hand, it also doesn't tell us why we should like it.
Basically, your opinion, is not worth much right now. You could have elaborated a bit at least, as in, "It sucks because of the graphics" or something.
TL;DR, yet another spammy and useless thread.

Well, to begin with, initially I thought of this topic as a "joke topic" I mean, I do think that the "game" sucks and everything but the reason why I didn't write more was sorta part of the joke, like -the game is so meh, that it doesn't even deserve more than "it sucks" to describe it- but since you asked here's a little more:
For me the game was plain boring in every sense, and that's the main thing, aren't games supposed to be fun? But ok, you know what? let's ignore that fact and let's see this "thing" as an "experience" as "art" (I guess?) so, is the story any good? it's not, it's a very simple easy-to-write unoriginal and predictable story without twists nor unique features, 90's teenage lesbians, how exciting right? give me a break, not to mention that the only argument that people seem to have to defend this game is "you're too young" well I'm 25, I was a 90's kid, maybe I'm still 2young4you but still I'm not under the impresion that if I were +30 I'd be thinking "This game change my life" for me the story isn't that different from every other generic book for teenage girls.
I can't believe I'm saying this but I think the writing in this "game" is even worse than the one in the David Cage games... Maybe not that stupid and nonsensical but it's way more plain and boring for sure.

Now that's better. :D
Thanks for the review.
I also don't believe that age matters when playing games (well, unless between 0-14 years old)
I didn't play that game yet so I can't judge by myself, but I did enjoy playing... Wait scratch that, walking through Dear Esther, which is considered somewhat similar to Gone Home (called walking simulator, usually), and I'm only 18.
Believing that being "too young" or "too old" for gaming, or for a certain kind of game is pretty silly, keeping in mind that a 10 years old may very well play militaristic strategy games and that a 60+ years old plays shooters or kids games.
The games we enjoy playing is simply a matter of taste, in my opinion. ;)

I'm very late to this. But I loved your post, Jbond. :)

I loved it, but I can see why someone younger could see it as a bad game.

Well, I'm not 'young' and didn't like it either. It's boring and predictable
Comment has been collapsed.
Laughing at all the comments saying "You must be too young to not get this game". Just no, it wasn't a very good game. It just never had any real substance to it.

This.
I was 18 in 1995. This "game" is still pretentious hipster stuff, and not fun or interesting.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah, It was pretty bland. I spent one hour completing the game & 8 hours collecting every possible object that I could pick up & moving it to the bathtub in the parents bedroom. The amount of objects stacked in that bathtub caused my game to crash.
