Soo there are many bad reaction about MS and new xbox, and something they remind me. These are real quotes from Amazon (HL2).

"This could be a Terrific game,if there was no STEAM activation WDF..there
are many companies that invest millions in software and they don't get
you through Damn Sh... activation thing.PERIOD."

"Valve has the perfect con going. They charge you forty bucks to buy a game that you can't play UNLESS you use steam to verify that you actually bought it but since STEAM may make your computer crash or freeze your system so you can't actually play the game and since you opened the box you can't return it to the the store and get your money back. INTELLECTUAL COPYRIGHT FASCISM has led to this state of affairs where crooks like VALVE can sell you products that don't work and YOU don't have the right to get your money back. Boycott VALVE and don't ever download games (from any company) so that we don't get to a future where STEAM is the only way to play games at all. That is the future these INTELLECTUAL COPYRIGHT HOLDER FASCISTS are drooling over. Don't give it to them."

THE BEST:

"You MUST have an Internet connection to play. If anybody got hold of your CD key number before you, you will never be able to play the game, and Valve will NOT help you if you bought the game on eBay. I never thought I'd say this, but Valve is worse than Microsoft."

Is that looks familiar? ;)

Nothing is as bad as the xbox one.
You can't play offline for more then 24 hours.

Steam I could load up and play offline whenever I please.

You can't play offline forever though, you need to log in once a week I think.

From Valve

"This is not actually true - Offline Mode is designed to be indefinite. You can't access any of Steam's online features such as friends lists or saved game synchronization, of course, but the client should allow you to run in Offline Mode for as long as you like."

Unfortunately, from my experience, the only way I can enable offline mode is if I change the setting while I'm online. If Steam isn't running when the internet goes down, then I can't access any of my Steam games. It gives me the option to start in offline mode, but 9 times out of 9, that doesn't work.

If your internet goes out while steam is in online mode, and THEN you restart your computer then yes. Ive had my connection tank out many times and could play any game ive had installed. I put my pc in sleep mode and have no issue starting a game up before my internet connection kicks in. If I log out of steam and then disconnect, then I cant play a game.

I know that if you have steam in offline mode, you can keep it in offline mode for at least a year and counting.

I bought HL2 in 2004 and at that time I didn't like Steam either. But Steam wasn't polished at all back then. Nowadays it mostly works great.

What online DRM service would you call most polished or perfect then? An actual client, not one that is a utopian dream. GOG/GMG/Gamers Gate/Desura/Origin/

I mean, Origin allows you to play any game downloaded w/o the client even installed, but billing, sales, and actual function are crap. GMG lets you sell back certain games for profit, but usability is lacking tbh.

Biggest complaints I see with steam is that you need it installed to use the games and cant trade in the games youve purchased or tied to an account already. You also need to update the client and some other updating bits for games.

I have been with Steam since Orange Box, but I lost that account when I changed internet providers and forgot to change the email associated with the account. Steam support refused to give it back. So six years.

Its more then a bit harsh to imply an entire service is shit because you cant ask support to get the games from an old account whos email you dont have access to anymore. I mean, how shady does that sound? "Yes, support? Id like all the games tied to the account linked to the email twitchious@roadrunner.com. Uh, I forgot the password to the account. No I dont have access to the email anymore..."

Ive heard though, ie rumors, that you can have the account's email switch over if you can provide details such as the cc used for game purchases, or an original cd key to a retail copy of the game etc.

The only reason Steam is tolerated is the sales it has. Likewise, the only reason people do not like Origin is because of the lack of GOOD sales. Additionally, I wish to point out that nobody likes DRM, but we like the service Steam supplies where we do not need the game disk to place nor do we need to hang on to the disks to ever install games. The Xbox One handled the topic VERY POORLY, it could of been a good thing like Steam but instead all the xbox one has to offer is more limitations and less services. At least Steam supplies a good balance of service to restrictions ratio.

Why Steam is NOT Xbox One:

  • Offline Mode.
  • Lots of Trust earned over the years.
  • Games available for re-download even after they got deleted from the store (on X360 you cant do this.. when its gone, its gone).
  • Awesome prices!!
  • NO HIGHTECH-CAMERA NEEDED IN ORDER TO USE IT!
  • Steam-Trading enables you to make great deals even better.

As soon as Microsoft fullfills all those Points, I will stop complaining.. in fact, if they scrap the forced Kinect, it all depends on the pricing. The DRM-stuff directly influences the price I am willing to pay for a game/console and I would NEVER pay full price for a game that has to be activated online in any way (not even on Steam).

Steam is drm, but it has evolved far past that. Xbox wants that, but they don't understand consoles, obviously, because they are all about fast and easy, PC has never been like that. Steam was years ahead of it's time when it came out. Valve has also stated they would distribute drm free versions if shut down was imminent. I feel like ms is just taking the wrong approach to this whole thing. You need to transition into it, cannot dive into the deep end like this arty silk

Yea, i don't think the new x box is gonna be as bad as people see it, but if you have to be online once every 24 hours i would soon see it as a chore rather then fun. There are many ways around this, but then again, im not sure ill always have internet available when i want to play games, which is why i would get a console in the first place. The concept is great for highly developed countries which have constant fast and cheep internet, but its not gonna go well everywhere. I guess other countries aren't really the population they aim to sell it to but they should consider global market rather then privileged people

Steam for HL2 was terrible. I remember it taking several hours at one time to install HL2, with Steam crashing, not updating, all manner of terrible nonsense that stood in the way of playing the game. These days Steam is pretty good, but early on it was just what people said in the early reviews, a piece of huge, unwieldy DRM that got in your way and provided no tangible benefit.

Microsoft's solution probably won't be as bad as that.
