They're both great games. To say that the original Portal is rubbish is ridiculous. Sure, Portal 2 is longer, but the original Portal has its own, dark atmosphere. I'm not saying Portal 2 is worse than Portal, they're on the same level, and they both have a dark atmosphere, but Portal's atmosphere is more subtle.

Portal 1 was like five minutes long and filled with GlaDOS not being very funny and like three mechanics set in a series of samey test chambers and then a series of samey behind-the-scenes areas. Portal 2 was hours upon hours long and filled with Stephen Merchant and J.K. Simmons and like a bajillion new mechanics on top of the original three, all set in far, far more varied and interesting locations and with co-op and now the ability to build your own test chambers to boot.
"Rubbish" may have been a bit harsh, but they are not even remotely on the same level.

Well, the point of Portal wasn't "GLaDOS being funny". It was more about the subtle things: Rattman's Dens, which told the story of a man who went through the same situation that you were going through, GLaDOS constantly contradicting herself, making you feel nervous, in an abandoned facility, of which you had no idea what happened to the people working there.
As for Portal 2, I did enjoy it, but I enjoyed the subtle things more than the constant jokes. The ramblings of a desperate man trying to avoid death, the stories of near-torture experiments, and so on. Now, I liked Portal 2's humour, but you have the wrong idea if you think that Portal is all about humour. It's not. It's a really dark, dark game. It might present its darkness with humour, but when you analyze it, you'll realize who dark it is.

My problem is, you take away the portal, and it's not really anything new. Trapped with a lying AI that probably wants to kill you? Been done to death. It only works because it's a parody. The foundation for all of it is humor, including the dark parts. The dark parts are only there to back up the humor. And on the whole, the game just isn't as funny as Portal 2.

get l4d2 cause it comes with the the first l4d campaigns so theres no point in buying the first l4d

The same maps, but its not the same game. The first one was actually somewhat scary, there weren't ridiculous melee weapons, and shitty special infected that ruin the game. The zombies actually looked scary, grey skin and whatnot, more like something out of a zombie movie. In my opinion, L4D is better than the sequel in quite a few ways.

I gotta agree to this. I understand the story was very superb, how they laid it out was amazing. But the bad thing was it was TOO straightforward. There was no exploration... at all. It's like walking on a straight path.
I didn't think it was the worst game I've seen, but it definitely wasn't as amazing as I heard from people. It kinda reminds me of Resistance actually >.>

Half-Life 2 is a really great game. I got it recently and I can agree with the "greatest game" claims. Of course, I'm looking to buy Garry's Mod and Fallout in the summer sale.

Last sale, I bought the entire half life series for 6€. So keep your hopes up.

I've never played Half Life 2 and I feel really bad for not doing so. I've been told that it's an amazing game and people can't understand how I haven't played the greatest game of all time.
