Did you see Elfen Lied?
I haven't watched too many anime series unfortunately but Elfen Lied is probably my favourite. You know, this style is not common. EL is very mature and that's they artistic vision how they want to send a message.

what makes elfen lied my favorite anime is the social criticism that the anime contains, just like in a good movie, I can even learn something from it.

Let me recommend a much more mellow Japanese movie that you should watch from beginning to end: Tetsuo - The Ironman

Then after this, watch any movie from Satoshi Kon and his series Paranoia Agent. The series is a very strong commentary on Japanese society.

Paranoia Agent is mellow. The scariest thing you have to worry about is a cute pink dog called Maromi. Almost like a dog version of Hello Kitty.

There's actually quite a large number of shows that are much more disturbing than this one. :)
But if you really don't want to watch things like that, then I'd recommend Monster (2004). It's a great mystery detective story and it's not focused on gore :).

Today I saw all the episodes (Not the OVA) of the anime Elfen Lied.
And really, it is disturbed by the macabre and perverse is that anime.
Too many murders, an extremely macabre plot, some characters that are on the brink of madness (or even already lost the trial), all characters have a sad and dark past.
I do not want more, no more, no more. I will never be the same. I think im going to see something less darker, like Sakura Trick <3
