MoH was my first game on PS2. Only played single player though. Didn't know there was multiplayer on PC

I used to own a local server in counter strike source and csgo. Its easy to manage because it depends on the age group my server was 18+ kids were not allowed to play because of their childish attitude. Then in 2018 i started playing The Division and closed the servers. I returned to csgo in 2019 and the community was toxic as hell and full of hackers so i decided to keep it closed.

I was never a server owner/dev/manager but I came close and was an admin for many GMod servers, was going to manage one server but it got scrapped before it could lift off. My dad also previously owned a few local servers in CSS for a few years.
My experience was always either really good or just extremely bad as an admin. Some days were great, with regulars coming in and it was like a happy family but then other days would be so bad with people treating me differently due to me being a girl. Usually these were the toxic regulars who the manager refused to get rid of despite them being extremely disgusting (saying lewd things even though they knew I was a teenager and these guys were way in their 30s). The manager also joined in a few times saying I was using the fact that I was a women to get people to like me and it was causing them to treat me differently. It was awful. Especially because I was a teen at the time and spent all my time just on the servers. I would wake up, spend an hour playing, go to school, come home, and spend all day playing because I was just so happy. I ended up just leaving because I couldn't deal with the manager putting all that pressure onto me just for it to be useless because "I was just a girl" in his eyes and "using it to my benefit". I now don't admin anything and honestly, don't want to, ever again.
My dads experience on the other hand as a local server manager was just super relaxing until after a few years, there was these hackers who would come in and just ruin it for everyone, my dad at that point just got fed up and shut it all down because he wasn't having fun anymore which was why he started the server in the first place. To get on and game with online people and make friends but after hackers got to it, he'd ban them but some other hacker would show up and rinse repeat. People he became friends with just left because it was getting to a point that it was aggravating.

I had 1 girl and 1 woman in my team back in the day. Fortunately they didn't have such experiences, but I'd imagine that is thanks to there being no voice chat in SAMP (text only, and game sounds). It also depends on the toxicity and maturity level of the community. I think from what you've described it's safe to say that GMod doesn't run short of those people.
I also think that the fact that we had strict rules in place about respecting admins (dictatorship yes) helped a lot. There was warnings, temp and perma ban systems in place. Most kids would be too scared to lose their ability to play on the server and sometimes have their stats cut by provoking admins. We also punished players that went too far in insulting each other, but it's too difficult to find nuance if both are insulting each other.
And if a person were to be banned, they would have to be convincing enough in their ban-appeal.
We had public shaming boards containing stories of people that went to the darkside and did some horrible things in the server (admins that abused their power, inside-jobs, etc..).
All in all, there will always be disrespectful kids (and 30-year old kids lol) and the only way to mitigate them is by putting strict rules in place and treating them equally.
I have to emphasize that you need to sacrifice your likeability as an owner/manager/admin in favor of enforcing the rules and being strict. That is in my opinion one key factor for a successful server in the long term.

Perhaps many of you thought about running a game server, especially after GTA V unofficial (FiveM) servers like NoPixel went trending over the last few years.
There are several other games out there, like DayZ, gmod, MTA.. that have (un-)official multiplayer mods.
Not everyone knows about their existence, so it would be informative to hear from some of you about your own experiences :)

My summarized experience:
I myself have had past experience with running a community on SA-MP (San Andreas multiplayer). Unfortunately, after 5 years of management and development, I was overwhelmed with mod-specific vulnerabilities and exploits targeting several communities, including ours. I had to resign and hand over control to someone who had better knowledge of the underlying network implementation. Feel free to ask me anything about it.
