Hi there,

i will buy a new PC soon and I would like you to have a look at my Setup and tell me what you think about it.

  • Intel Core i7-4770K (CPU)
  • MSI Z87-G45 Gaming (Mainboard)
  • MSI N760 TwinFrozr 2GD5/OC (GPU)
  • 16GB-Kit Corsair Vengeance (LP) PC3-12800U CL9-9-9-24 (RAM)
  • be quiet! STRAIGHT POWER E9 580W (PSU)
  • FRACTAL DESIGN Define R4 PCGH Edition (Case)
  • WD Caviar Black 2TB (HDD)
  • be quiet!Dark Rock Pro 2 (CPU-Fan)

I just wanna hear your opinion. Have i done anything wrong, what yould you recomend and what do you think about the quality of the components ? Bad experience with any of the manufacturers?

The PC will be mainly used for Gaming and Video-editing (no Lets Plays btw. :P). Also its very important to me, that the PC is really quiet.

Let me hear what you think

greets!

You could buy a more expensive GPU and PSU, and 8Gb instead of 16Gb, just by taking an i5-4670k instead of this i7, It's very good build but where is the SSD? you could get a more better performance PC for same money if spending less on CPU and RAM. I mean if I get an expensive PC like that I would choose another part, with an 780 at least, you could fit it, but it's just my opinion.

thanks for your feedback! i was going for the CPU and RAM because of the video-editing. So I can still add a stronger GPU and a SSD later if I need more gaming-power. Am i right with that ?

video-editing, so.. you have 1 bootleneck on that config, you need fast drives(SSD) or an RAID configuration if you had more HDDs. The GPU is also very important but your choice wont be disappointed on video-editing or any current game..

I'd say go with an i5 then get a better GPU + a SSD.

I second this ^ , better GPU and SSD is crucial. No game will take advantage of 8 threads anytime soon and videos will render just fine on i5 .

any silent suggestions?

its first time i read something bad about this cooler. Do you have personal experience aswell ?

Also it seems like they were testing Dark Rock 2 not Dark Rock Pro 2 (but i have to admit, that they will probably be manufatured very similar) ?

Same thing. The Pro is just bigger.

Browse that site and see if you can find something that both suits you and is available where you live.

It also depends on whether you are going to overclock or not.

thanks for your advice!

Probably wont overclock for now, since CPU seams to be OP for games anyway

4770 without k if u wont overclock plus this rig cries for a SSD, plus shitty cooler as mentioned above, go with Noctua NH-U14S

The 4770k seems to have slightly better benchmarks, than the one without the k, dont you think its worth it ?

Is 16gb ram overkill? Also if you are going with such a hugh end build, why not have an SSD boot drive? The SSD alone is awesome.

I think 16GB is fine for video-editing. And with games I'm on the safe side too for the next years.

What do modern games require, I am having lots of troubble with my current 4GB. They are always filled up so i tought 8GB would be on the lower end these days?

I would get a bit more power on the PSU. Just in case you decide to SLI later on. Would recommend a good 750W. Doesn't have to be much more expensive. BeQuiet is decent enough, I would probably pick a XFX or Seasonic (same thing as XFX, just differently labeled :P)

I must say I'm surprised to see you spend this much and not get an SSD.

whats special about XFX/Seasonic ?

Have to agree; you'll probably want atleast a 700 watt psu.

XFX/Seasonic are good brands...

His computer is maybe going to use around 200W at full load. Even with heavy SLI, that's 300-350W.

yeah i checked various PSU-Calculators and it was always far below 500W

crucial m4 or Plextor M5S or Samsung 840 Pro, we need specific models here not just brands

Intel 330 or 520. Not the xx5 versions. Not any other manufacturers. Way too risky due to firmware issues and low-quality NAND.

Go with i5 and better GPU, you don't really need 16GB. What is CPU fan? You mean CPU cooler? You can go with Cooler Master 212 EVO. If you want, you can get like 64 or 120GB SSD for the system, the system will be really fast with SSD.

I also saw you like "silent"? You better get your system cooler, but silent... And that case don't really have good cable management or good cooling in it. (I don't know about the cooling since I only see it on picture...)

tbh i prefer a system that might be hotter by some degrees, but silent. Which case would you recommend ?

Check out Antec 1200. Also a cheap case HAF 912 that might work too. And Cooler Master CM 690 has support for 10 fans...

If you have room (and money), go for Corsair 550D.

i was going for the Corsair 550D before, but then I read some reviews where the R4 had better cooling and noise-performance

Unless those reviews are performed with exactly the same amount of air circulating through the case, you can't compare them...

The R4 is nice, but it's a really small case and has worse cable management.

You can compare stock performance.

Permalink

What do you mean by that ?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I'm not entirely sure what mkrnic is saying but to me it looks like he's saying you can't compare cooling performance between cases because they'll have different quantities of air circulating through the case, either from using different fans or less/more fans.

Case stock performance is how a case performs out of the box, with the same fans and same number of fans that the case ships with. Put the same hardware in both cases, run some tests, check the temperatures and there's your case cooling comparison. That's how case cooling performance is always compared, I'm really not sure why someone would claim they're not comparable.

Because Case A might ship with three 800 rpm fans, and Case B might ship with six 1500 rpm fans. There's also different fan positions, covered side/top vents, etc.

in the review they tested open and closed vents aswell as fans at high and low voltage.

wont lose any valuable on the internal drives anyway. Projects are on an external drive which is mirrored at least once every month.

If the HDD fails I will just grab a new one and start downloading all the games from steam again :P

Hey guys, I just wanted to let you know how this turned out. I very stuck with the build i mentioned in the OP but added a SSD (Samsung 840 Pro 128GB).

  • Intel Core i7-4770K (CPU)
  • MSI Z87-G45 Gaming (Mainboard)
  • MSI N760 TwinFrozr 2GD5/OC (GPU)
  • 16GB-Kit Corsair Vengeance (LP) PC3-12800U CL9-9-9-24 (RAM)
  • be quiet! STRAIGHT POWER E9 580W (PSU)
  • FRACTAL DESIGN Define R4 PCGH Edition (Case)
  • Samsung 840 Pro 128GB (SSD)
  • WD Caviar Black 2TB (HDD)
  • be quiet!Dark Rock Pro 2 (CPU-Cooler)

Everything is fine Im having no problems at all. It is a very silent build, CPU and GPU run at 29°c in idle. Under load both dont pass 60°c.

If you got any questions about the build feel free to ask.

Thanks for your help!

You are not giving yourself much upgrade options at 580w. Up the power supply so that if you want to add a raid or second gpu in the future you can.

I dont understand why people always go for OC-able components. If you just want to do some gaming, you don't need OC and you can ge away with the pc cheaper that way.
Also, if you want a silent system, drop the caviar black, or better yet, drop WD for good, cause they are noisy as hell(afaik), and caviar black is the fastest in the series but it sacrifices stability and noise.

16 GB Ram is an overkill for gaming (8 is more than enough) and you can add more later, it's easy peasy.

And if you want to stick to an OC platform, it would be best to increase the PSU.

Forgot to rate it, 9/10.
Overall it's an awesome build and i doubt you will have any problems with it (performance wise),it will hold up nicely for the next couple of years.
