I see ppl vote for games that were not released this year in GOTY category
well it's steam fault
Comment has been collapsed.
They don't actually specify that the game should be released this year. Maybe people played the game this year, or are still playing the game to this day. Makes perfect sense to me at least. Not that we won't get the same AAA games voted for in the top ten anyway but some variation is always nice.

well, when you say goty you refer to the current year

It makes sense for nominations like this but your statement is not actually true. When I say game of the year I usually refer to a specific edition of a game, not the best game current year. Also, for me personally, the best game I played a year is very rarely released during the same year.

Nah it's not. I heard about the issues and how some people couldn't run it properly on high-end rigs but I never had any problems with it. It ran flawlessly for me. It is a great game with an amazing OST and this video goes in depth about why it is so great.

I perceived The “Labor of Love” Award reserved for something like NieR: Automata. A meticulously crafted narrative experience (disguised as a hack n slash game) touching on the subjects of nihilism, existentialism and free will. Since it came out in 2017 I couldn't assign it as a current GOTY.

While it would seemingly fit when just looking at a title, the explaining description points into a completely different direction
devs continue to nurture and support their creation. This game, to this day, is still getting new content after all these years.
That unfortunately does not apply to that game at all. A shame for Square being so lazy to not bother with even just simple patching.
For the aforementioned qualities it would then be a better fit (as in less deviating form the category's purpose) for the GOTY pick, or the machine one.
(not that it really matters much)

It was a lot easier picking nominees this year:

I might change a couple of categories but here it is:

Game of the Year = Dead Cells
Best game I played in 2018 no doubt. Period.
VR Game of the Year = Superhot VR.
Haven't played it cause I don't own a VR headset, but I'll assume is as good as the regular one.
Labor of Love = Door Kickers - Action Squad.
This could as well be a GOTY contender for me. Really fun game and got me addicted. I picked them for this category because devs are always updating it with something new and/or fun. Like a Halloween event, and now Workshop support.
Best Developer = CD Projekt Red.
Thronebreaker. Gwent. Cyberpunk hype.
Best Environment = Kingdom Come: Deliverance.
I wanted to nominate them for something but its indeed a very beautiful game.
Better with Friends = Epic Loon.
Very fun game for co-op.
Best Alternate History = Assassin's Creed: Odyssey.
I'm enjoying it. I'm glad it learned a lot from Witcher 3. I missed a game like this for a while. And I think it perfectly fits the category.
Most Fun with a Machine = The Room Three.
Couldn't think of anything with a car or robot that I really enjoyed. I think this can be considered as a machine tho. I just recently discovered the "The Room" series and I'm loving it.

I haven't finished my nominations yet, but I don't get one thing - why did they allow to vote for any game / software / video / DLC in the "VR Game of the Year" and the "Game of the Year" categories? It almost feels like they want us to make some silly nominations.
EDIT: Ok, Hatoful Boyfriend - Collector's Edition DLC is my "VR Game of the Year" nominee. Not VR, not from this year and not even a game.

I'm glad for that, as I haven't played any game released in 2018. This lets me choose something I played this year.
If people were restricted to just 2018-released games which they hadn't played, they might just go for the well-known options and thus skew voting.

Is anyone else not getting the "Nominate a game in each category" part of the tasks ticked off even though they nominated all?
