Every now and then this is mentioned in passing by someone within the company, though it never seems to be the general consensus. It could be what saves them in the end though. I originally cancelled my Warcraft subscription to get into The Secret World, and that has since gone F2P as well.

Indeedy, but then how do they offer sufficient benefits to long time subscribers? "Thank you for your continued support! Enjoy this complimentary 30 day xp booster pack for all of the hundreds of $ you spent with us."

You can play Standard up to level 20. Character no longer gains xp after that, you top out at I think 8 gold, you can't trade or use the mailbox, and there are a number of other restrictions. I tried it that way before I subscribed in the first place. It's nice to set your own pace, but you can get to 20 in one sitting. Unlike the 14 day trial where you could get as far as your skills would allow you.

Nah. Not soon.
"Soon" is only the cash shop that normally goes with the F2P. (That is actually confirmed, see http://us.battle.net/wow/en/forum/topic/9377319765?page=88#1745 and other places.)
As long as they still have a few million subbers, they'll still have more disposable income as most of the competition - not worth the risk of shaking up the user base business-wise.

You're the example of proof. Here you are, talking about WoW somewhere on the nets; intended cause and effect.

Fair point. Word of mouth is very strong these days.

Activision-Blizzard and generous? No way! Rather the NSA found out that you like computer games and sent a copy to your house. Should be a sign for you to wear a tin foil hat.

WoW started to fail hard after Lich King.It was the last good thing Blizzard done, after that Blizzard went full retard.
Cataclysm > Pandaria, but both are so bad and made Blizzard desperate !

Funnily enough, when Pandaria launched they added Wrath of the Lich King to the standard game so everyone gets that goodie for free. I really enjoyed Cataclysm myself, but I really don't get the panda angle.

Search me, but like Lucidus said, it looks good on the shelf. The physical and digital copies are the same price in the blizzard store as well.

Well around this time last year, they sent me the WoW Battle Chest for free, digital copy of course, along with 30 days of playtime, the playtime may have ran out but I still have the game in case I ever want to play it again. Also, the only thing I previously had on Battle.net was Diablo 3

I got an email a couple months ago giving me everything up to Mists. I played it for a week .. But never paid to play a sub based game.. and still don't play do
I have played LOTRO and Marvel Heroes. I enjoy the f2p model, and buy what I want. I spent about 2 years playing LOTRO and put in about $100. And MH since May and put in $5

Yes, this seems to be a new thing. Here's a Reddit thread about it.

Indeed. I had a lot of fun with it when I could afford it, and I'm open to the idea of coming back once I sort out my finances. This actually does push me along a bit as I'll have new content to delve into.

I've been wanting to play WoW again for awhile now. Only missing MoP.
WHERE IS MY MAIL TOO, BLIZZARD?
I got a scroll of resurrection from a friend back in the Cata days and they gave me Cata free for redeeming it, so this isn't as farfetched as it sounds.

I really wonder how the Diablo 3 expansion turns out. The expansion sounds like Blizzard is trying to win back players, but at the same time Blizzard refuses to address the issues that players are most upset about. And now Blizzard is having to publicly ignore D3 fans who are praising the console port as the best version of the game, while adamantly defending the continued existence of the auction house and always online DRM in the PC version.

They still make tons of money. I doubt giving out an expansion for free would hurt them much.

You do know that 7.7 million subscribers is A LOT, right? It's over 80 million USD a month (idk, I assume anyway, math is not my strongest side). It doesn't matter if it drops a million here and there, they make big money. I can say that it works pretty well for Blizzard, and have done so for almost 8 years.

Anyone hear about that Titan thing? I heard a rumor. Perhaps this is the beginning of it.
EDIT: I really enjoyed playing WoW but completely uninstalled it around a month ago. MoP was good, better than Cata, but I just can't keep on playing. [I do plan on keeping up with the lore, though. Garrosh getting his ass whupped will be the best lore event ever.]

So I received a curious box in the mail yesterday from Blizzard. Within the box I found a physical copy of World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria. I've not played since Pandaria was in beta but I did have everything up to Cataclysm. Along with the box was a little insert that reads "Get Back in the Fight! Come back to Azeroth with a FREE copy of World of Warcraft: Mists of pandaria and play FREE for 7 days."
Turns out that Pandaria is mine now as I've added it to my battlenet account. Even though it only comes with 7 days it saves me $40 if I do actually want to return to it.
Has anyone else had this happen to them recently? Is this perhaps an act of desperation to counter the deflation in their user base? Is this a hint that we'll be hearing something concrete on Expansion 5 soon? Or is Blizzard just being... generous?
