(as suggested, I'm adding a poll)

It would be nice to be able to limit giveaways only to people who really want the game rather than those who bulk-join giveaways. It would also increase their chances of winning significantly.

There's a theoretical option of abuse if people add the entire steam catalog to their wishlist, but I think it's unlikely that anyone will bother to do that. If it ever becomes an issue there are many ways to prevents impact (for example, for every 500 games in wishlist of users with Level less than 2 they lose half of their account points).

Would you like an option to limit giveaways only to people who have the game on their wishlist?

I don't care

I think I've seen this brought up before... Maybe have, maybe not. I'll look around in a few minutes.

But... essentially what would be to stop someone from adding the game to their wishlist just for the purpose of entering the giveaway?
Would it only be visible if they already had it in their wishlist? What about the "Invite Only"-style giveaways where the link is given on the forums, they see that link, know what the game is, and add it to their wishlist for the purpose of entering?

May or may not be possible to pull the wishlist added dates so the date must be at least 2~3 days prior to the giveaway start to qualify to enter, maybe. Or would just been invisible unless already in wishlist work on its own?

I have nothing against the principle, but I kinda feel it would work better using whitelist giveaways. Adding a small amount to whitelist based on if they seem to have a genuine interest. Not a ideal solution either, since some people maintain mass whitelists and/or blacklists and it'd be a hassle to remove after each one.
But a recent Homeworld Remastered giveaway used this setup.

Only found one topic on the same matter after a quick search using "wishlist", didn't seem to last long under the pretense of there being people who do abuse the system by adding every single steam game to their wishlist.
Suggetion: Add to "Who Can Enter" list "Have in Wishlist" item

Thanks, I'm going to experiment with an invite-only giveaway the next time. It's not exactly what I prefer, but would at least increase the chances that the recipient of the game really wants it.

Also not everyone will want to limit their games this way. I for one never limit my giveaways to Invite only or Groups, but I accept that some people want to do it.

What I meant:
There are people who don't use the wishlist and people who put everything in the wishlist.

You want only people really interested to join the giveaway, and that would be nice, but imho this way it's not perfect

No, thank you. I use my wishlist not only for games i would like to own, but to remember games or other reasons. I do not want to be forced to add every single game i would like to own to it (and thus clutter my wishlist), only to be able to join giveaways.

I add them to the wishlist so i can quickly see if they have some kind of discount. There are loads of games i'd like to have that i dont have there because the discounts never payoff.
This would only help people who have a lot of time in their hands to add games to the wishlist and adding them would require an extra step.

i think its a really good idea. yes it could be abused.. yes its not 100% safe that there are just people who want it..
so what? i dont think that the percentage of people searching explicit for those giveaways would be great.

+1 from me! i think its a great idea

Why not just do it like: For the top 25 games on wishlist. This would make abuse harder.

Still abusable, you can change the order anytime, steam will keep the date you added the game to the wishlist

But better than the abuse of having the whole Steam catalogue on your wishlist, no?

A bit better yeah.
Another idea could be something like:
I'm gifting batman origins, I open a temporary group and I invite people who played batman arkham city\asylum (based on time in game + achievement) it's not perfect too but it's better than nothing (sadly is not for lazy people like me xD)

don't know if Steam API allow that, but "only if the game has been on the wishlist for more than X days/months"

Besides the above reasons.

What about people who discover a game because of the giveaway, but then can't join it?

Check the game out, add to wishlist, sync?

The whole idea would be to only allow people who had the game on their wishlist before the giveaway started to join. Otherwise, it's just pointless as you just demonstrated.

Considering different people use their wishlist in different ways, or not at all, I don't think it's such a great idea. I am 100% behind the sentiment, but it's nearly impossible to get the desired result from this.

Yeah, unfortunately there's room for abuse.
But generally, I'm in favor of something that will ensure that only those who really want to play a game are getting it, instead of bulking for entries just to win something. And seing that the demand is there, this isn't the first thread to suggest something like that be implemented on SG, there's hope and we might be onto something in the near future.

I personally do enter only giveaways I want and hide the rest (my SG is usually less than 50 GAs public and group..)
But even I have some games unplayed that I've won, so far.

For one trying to decide who really wants to play and what games you idle too much.
And one more revelation. Steamgifts can't sync wishlist very frequently.

I think for now you would have to pick the entries yourself. I've done that with invites. Of course I have my whitelist, but when I only want certain people to join I message each one individually and give them an invite.
I know that feel, bro! And all the people just joining because they are "collectors" is a bit unfair to all the people that actually wanna play the games. I know some that are collectors but know this issue and only enter something they would play tho. So there are some good people, but you will reach mostly leechers with public ones unfortunately.

Ofc not. Having a game in wishlist does not mean a person really wants it, and not having it in wishlist doesn't mean they don't want it.

Folks tend to put every game that looks even remotely interested onto their wishlist so nope

I would much prefer someone who actually looked at the game and considered it "remotely interesting" to win it than someone who just bulk-joins giveaways without even bothering to check if the game is of any interest.

Abusers gonna abuse. There is a script that adds all the steam games into your wishlist

I personally don't like this idea too much, because I rarely browse through steam games, nor do I visit gaming sites very often. Steamgifts is a place where I find out about some cool games.
There are games that I have added to my wishlist just because of steam-gifts GA :)

I check out every game on steam to see if I would like the game or not, before I join GA.

In my humble opinion, the higher the CV gets, the less exploiters remain, so you could just create higher LVL GA
