this might be true. Amazon is usually nice, at least in this department. They messed up somehow around Christmas giving Dead Space 2 keys, so they reissued all of them just in case the first ones didn't work. Mine did, so I got another one to give to a currently former friend.

"UPDATE 10/15 8:16PM PST: Apparently the keys for Supreme Commander 2 we got from Square are actually activating Supreme Commander 1. I am now going to pull the buy box and email Square. I'll update again when I have more information. This panda is sad.
Cheers,
Tony"

UPDATE: I called Amazon Support. They gave me another product key. It was also for Supreme Commander 1 (duplicate product.... i'm thinking giveaway? :D)
They told me that when Supreme Commander 2 as a standalone game came back in stock they'd give me a promo code to get it free.

Hmm I just revealed my key about 15 mins ago. Will go test it out tonight to see if I get SupCom 1 or 2.

Response from chat support:
"[...]I am sorry to hear about the trouble with your order. Unfortunately I will need to put you in touch with our Game and Software downloads team. They will be the ones to be able to look into this further than I can. They don't have chat support at this time but I can send them an email for you to look into this and get in contact with you."
I'm waiting...

So anyone knows which batches of keys are affected? I bought it in the second batch (right after it became unavailable the first time) would that be a sc1 key then? (cannot test it as i bought supcom2 on steam already would loose the key if it were a valid sc2)

^ This.
Just go ahead and try to activate it. Steam won't destroy keys if you already have the game.

I had 2x keys given in Be Mine bundle 3 from Groupees, for Avencast. I loaded the first one, then realised a week later they had given me a second key. I couldn't tell which was the one I had used. I tried inputting both into steam, to see if 'duplicate' key would come up.. but if you already have the game, it just says 'already installed, play the game?'. I gave away my second key last week and no issues.. so testing the keys does not invalidate, as long as you actually have it on your account.. otherwise then of course it will add it to your account instead of 'testing' it.

I called amazon again about this and they hooked me up with a BOXED copy of Supreme Commander 2 for free. They assured me that the CD-Key in the box would activate on Steam and be for the correct game.

If I knew it was Supreme Commander 1 I would have gotten it, :(

Well Im sure you all know of the pack but the thing is when I redeemed my Supreme Commander 2 code, I got the original Supreme Commander and not the second one. I found it odd, and should I contact costumer service?
Update: People who had SC1 can now redeem their SC2 code
