The numbers in August were not as great as other month (except with the playtime) but still great job to everyone who participated! Better less than none :)

  • 5147 achievements have been achieved
  • 2081.7 hours have been played
  • 189 games have been beaten
  • 76 people have participated and beaten at least one game.

Hope to see you all again this month :)

Due to timezones/people not being online 24/7 I am still accepting any edits/applications for August for the next couple of days (till the August thread is closed).

The theme for this month is

Hello World!

(Thank you to Ardiffaz for the suggestion!)

Games that qualify for it are:
Programming games
Hacking games
Cyberpunk games
Games about artificial intelligence
Games about robots or androids
Typing games
Moddable games (Steam tag)
Puzzles
Wins with points value being a power of two (1P, 2P, 4P, 8P, 16P, 32P)

Don't have any game that fits the theme?

For this month I have decided to let people play their normal backlog games in case no win qualifies. Please use the "Note" section when submitting the game to inform me of this situation.

You can submit this months games you are going to play here:

https://pagywosg.xyz/events/4

I would still appreciate if you list the games you are going to play bellow just in case something goes wrong (yes, I do have backups of the site, but it only backups once a day) and so I can quickly reply you to the comment in case of any issues with the games.

FAQ.

Don't want to login into the site?

No worries, you can just leave the names of the games you are going to play in the comments bellow and I will add you into to the site myself at the end of the month.

Also, for the giveaway, I'd suggest Return of the Obra Dinn or DUSK

Samwise84 gives me a hand approving games, but she only does ones that are SG wins and leaves the rest for me to judge. Generally there shouldn't be anything wrong with it, but I will take a definitive look tomorrow (same with the games, appreciate the suggestions if they will end up working or not!) as it is really late and I would like to go to bed as it has been a long day. If you don't get any further message from me about it then it is all good.

As for giveaway suggestions - The Red Strings Club is at a 50% discount (7,49€) for another 34 hours and fits this months theme :D Or maybe Gris? (40%, 10,19€)

The problem with the games on sale on Steam right now is that I can not store them in my inventory anymore and therefore I might not be able to get that sale price in a month (with keys it is not a problem) :/

I know for a fact Gris is busted on Linux (there is a supposed fix for it, but I could not get it working myself), the other one is definitely an option if I manage to find a key for it somewhere so bookmarked for future use :)

nothing really changed since last month, I'll keep going with something little.. :S

Game Link Hours of Playtime Subcategory Status
A Short Hike Achievements - 8/8 5.5 8P (also 8 achievements, 2 of them hidden :D) FINISHED! (quite a nice game, pixelation may be heavy but it's adjustable; had quite a few technical issue in the beginning, with game crashing.. and there's no autosave so I had to replay the first bit for a couple of times :S overall it was worth it)
Abyss: The Wraiths of Eden Achievements - 20/20 5.1 HOG counts as puzzle, right? :P FINISHED!

Looks like it should have at least some type of robots inside, but I never played it so I can't say for 100% sure. "Hello World" is just the name of the theme, only was is in the subthemes counts.

Edit: I will just quote Samwise. She said she didn't watch the whole game so there could still be something there, but from the looks of it the game is not going to fit.

08:40 PM - samwise: Concerning Solar explorer: New Dawn, I've watched some gameplay videos and it is basically a game where you have to land your landing capsule on different planets, so not so sure about the robot part. Maybe your landing capsule is remote controlled.

Cutting down this month due to school. Going to start with three and not expect to finish all of them. At least this time they're games I'm pretty sure I'll enjoy as opposed to last month's bad controls extravaganza.

  1. 911 Operator: Point value is a power of two. Beaten! but after the deadline :(
  2. Journey To The Center Of The Earth: Puzzles. Played, briefly
    • Won this a long time ago, it's about time I actually gave it a try.
  3. Planets Under Attack: Robots or Androids. Verified
    • Started playing this last month but got stuck. Going to give it another go!

Notes:
911 Operator: Submitted as the base game for my 911 Operator: Special Resources DLC win. (4p)
Journey To The Center Of The Earth: Doesn't have any achievements, so I guess I'll have to submit a screenshot when I finish?

All three approved. For Journey To The Center Of The Earth please post a screenshot of the end credits (all others are of cours also welcome :) ), so that we can verify that it is done. Have fun with 911 Operator. I've just completed it last month.

Oof, that was a rough month. When I said I'd cut down for school, I didn't realize I wouldn't have time to finish even one! Not on time at least--I did finish the campaign for 911 Operator, but apparently the event ends at local time and I missed it by less than two hours. No chance of a grace period, I suppose?

Hi,

  1. Metro 2033 redux is fitting the cyberpunk category?
  2. Papo & Yo is a puzzle game?
  3. Gunpoint is a puzzle?
  4. Destiny Warriors RPG cost 2P to enter.
  5. Gris is not a puzzle, right?

Metro 2033 redux: don't think so?
Papo & Yo: it is tagged as puzzle so as far I am concerned it is fine.
Gunpoint: same as above
Destiny Warriors RPG: all good then.
Gris: it is a puzzle-platformer so most definitely a puzzle game :)

Thank you for your reply. Actually Mouse already approved both of them on the site, but I appreciate your answer as well ;)

Also, I saw what you finished HIVESWAP already, so what your thoughts about it, if you don't mind me asking?

As for me, I really liked this game. The best things IMO is humor and art style (damn, I made 40+ screenshots during my playthrough XD).
On the other hand, now I have to wait for the next part to be released in order to find out the continuation of the story, and this is really annoying. I mean, because of the fact that you need to wait for the continuation, I do not really like episodic games (especially if they are really good).

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well if you are talking about the initial approval, mouse's diligent work slave (if you haven't caught on to it, that's me 😉) did those yesterday.

Concerning Hiveswap, I like the game. Found it really funny, but at the same time I had some small issues with it, e. g. I did not like the long "chat sequences" between Joey and Dammek (at least I think that was the alien boys name). I simply think they were too long and I lost interest after a while. I also am not a fan of adding achievements that you cannot get like the one where you should load a save game out of the not released second part of the game 🤷🏻‍♀️
And also the story ends rather abruptly and with a cliffhanger, but that's the way with episodic games 😐

Should there be a sequel I will probably try it out.

I have a second entry :)
Just completed Wells, which qualifies because it is a 4P = 2^2 points GA. Before september I think I had about 6.5h playtime and nearly beat it.
But it was clunky as hell(because of my potatoe and because it doesn't have graphic options and because unity sucks :D) so I couldn't finish the last level. But I realised I could also lower my own screen resolution and it got much less clunky, enough to beat the normal mode and complete the ng+. In the end this game still got me to curse many times and I dislike it wholeheartedly :D But it's a SG win so I had to complete it if somehow possible

Haha, sure. The first three books in the Song of Ice and Fire series that the Game of Thrones TV series is based on came out at a steady pace in 1996, 1998, and 2000. The fourth came out in 2005 and the fifth in 2011. George RR Martin has announced two more books to conclude the cycle, but no sign of them yet. Of course, some people think that’s it’s unlikely that these two books will ever be written, given how entangled the storylines are and that Martin is seemingly doing a lot of things that are not "writing these books”. So currently, these sequels are vaporware.
Just off the top of my mind, a couple of games that might fit would be the Half-Life series or Beyond Good & Evil – but it was really more a George RR Martin joke than an actual idea.

vaporware
software or hardware that has been advertised but is not yet available to buy, either because it is only a concept or because it is still being written or designed.

Not to be mean or anything, but you wrote 4+ lines of Song of Ice and Fire instead of just explaining the not understood expression :P before searching it I wasn't sure if it's just "hanging in the air, waiting to be happened" series, or just super spaced out, long series.
(Seriously, even the joke came to my mind that if you let Fire and Ice be together for too long, they'll become steam - vapour :D )

Sometimes a simple explanation is better than chanelling our inner Martin to do the job.

Giving this a shot! Since us ladies got our moment with our own PAGYWOSG month, I thought maybe November is the best time to give the guys their moment too :)

"Movember"

The Movember Foundation was started to raise awareness of men's health issues, namely prostate cancer, testicular cancer, poor mental health and physical inactivity.

  • Games with male protagonist/s (the protagonist doesn't have to be human)
  • Games where the protagonist sports a cool mustache/beard/facial hair of any sort
  • Games won or released in November
  • Games where you grow stuff (like growing out a mustache/beard) including farm games, gardening games, etc
  • Games that are designed to raise awareness and/or for charity (Not a lot of these games out there but well... it fits the theme)
  • Sports games (to raise awareness regarding physical inactivity)
  • Games that deal with depression/mental health
  • Games won from male SGer

Not a lot of game categories here so feel free to suggest some more! :P

Fall in to Spring or Spring into Fall? Since, for those in the southern hemisphere November is actually spring time, so trying to be inclusive of both.
Fall - sad or disturbing games (psychological games like Cat Lady, Distraint etc,) slow, contemplative games and walking sims (like Talos Principal), games that take place in autumn (even partially), games that are heavily narrative (story rich), games that present mysteries to be solved (like HOGs or mystery/adventure games).
Spring - games that involve growing things/farming, games where plants are featured or are characters, games that take place in spring (or partially) games that are upbeat and energetic ie lighthearted metroidvania, platformers, and adventure games. Since animals are generally born in spring, games that include baby animals as characters, pets etc.

Games that are very colorful like spring and autumn are. Games that have "nature" tag.

Floundering a bit to find more tags, so if anyone likes the theme, feel free to suggest more types of games that might fit in.

Bump/ can't expand on it right now, but will edit in the evening.
Theme: movie night
edit: I'm a horribly forgetful person.

Theme: movie Night / something like that - thing is the "it's cold so we spend the afternoon-night inside with games". Up for change, I had the concept sooner than the name)

Games that are based on movies
Games that have movies based on them
Co-op / Splitscreen / local games
Games where there are no individual protagonist, you control more than one person/a group/party of them
"Interactive movie" type of games ( Life is Strange, Telltale ones)
Games that connect to movie making/cinematography
(games that are featured in subscription models - HB monthly, uPlay+, Origin Access, Gamepass PC - you can rent them as you could rent from Blockbuster or so to have something for the evening. This is a fucking wide category so in brackets)

I'm... actually quite surprised there's no Halloween theme in the October choices. I mean, a global Halloween theme. It seems like the Halloween theme is scattered on some of the choices.

Yep, same. But Halloween is not a thing in most of the world(including where I leave) so I guess it makes sense?

Maybe. I kinda thought that Spooktober was an Internet thing that anyone on the Internet would follow, regardless of your stance on Halloween.
Oh well. I'll find a way to stay true to Spooktober while respecting next month's theme.

There could be some games worth 64P won when the cap was 100P. It's highly unlikely, but still ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Any idea if they actually still show up as 64 points or did they drop down to 50?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

If I have to guess, I'd say they show as 50P now :\
We'd have to trust them if they say it was 64P.. but, again, chances of this happening are very low, even because 64 is a "strange price" (like 16 and 32)

Mine wanted to be more of a nostalgic comment ex: hey! do you remember when we also had those? rather than an actual suggestion ex: you'd better add those too

I didn't even think of that yea. I don't recall ever seeing a game being priced like that. Maybe some DLC bundle or something.

I assumed so, I was just curious what the show up as :)

If possible, I want to play one or more game for the last months subject I miss... as I won Solar explorer : New dawn on this group and its fits with august subject "space and science" https://store.steampowered.com/app/875080/

I'm kind of tempted to vote for "You can run, but you can't hide" just for an excuse to play Alien: Isolation again. (I don't have any SG wins that fit the theme, so backlog ahoy!) I've beaten it before, so I'd have to do it on Nightmare difficulty, or go for the no deaths achievement. Or both. No way that can go wrong, right? Right?? chucks a noisemaker and hides under the bed

Yep :) but to be fair all the themes for this month are great and it is pretty hard to pick from. If it wouldn't be for the HOGs winning me over with the "You can run, but you can't hide" theme I would have no idea which one to pick.

Linux native support is indeed rare, but a lot of games can be played through Proton - some sort of Windows emulator for Linux, tuned by Valve especially for gaming purposes.
If you want to check whether the game runs well with Proton or not, you can check https://www.protondb.com - any game with Native/Platinum/Gold status can be considered as LInux-friendly.

Aha! That’s from where “borked” is in insideones’s list of games above. It looks like I should switch to Linux then 😅
Thanks :D
Do you use some browser extension or script to show game status in the store? I found this one for Firefox, but maybe you have other suggestions :)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Oh, thanks for the add-on! Never thought about looking for one myself, I always did the checkings manually on the site or just the hard way by trying to launch the game :p

I was thinking about switching to Linux for years, but never did that mostly because of knowing that gaming support is quite poor. I finally switched like half a year ago, when I was once again pissed off by Windows update and also realized that Proton is really powerful thing. Since then I had only 1 game not working on Linux (it was a PA win), so I had to play it on Windows. I still have Win on second drive, just in case, but such a 'case' is very rare.

West of Loathing, Despotism 3k, The Hex, Short Hike, ISLANDERS, Equilinox - can't do because I am unable to gift in all regions and no Steam keys :(
while True: learn() - would want to wait a bit longer before repeating games
Pikuniku, Agatha Knife - bookmarked for future use

Thank you very much for the suggestion. And thank you for mentioning that addon. Since I game on Linux only I will definitely try it out as it will come indelibly handy if it works properly :)

So, do you accept Platinum/Gold status games? I'll check later today my wishlist once again then

No worries, already listing a bunch of games was amazing of you :)

As long as they don't really have any broken reports, sure why not :) I just say Linux support because it is a lot easier for an average person to check for that than proper Proton support. And accepting them doubles the amount of possible games up to a wooping 60% of Steam games. I would like to see MacOS do that :P

yeahyeah, I envy you :p
It's just I yesterday browsed PAX page, and it has 30 Win+Mac+Linux titles & 29 Win+Mac titles, and I didn't open URLs for latter, because I didn't know about Proton yet. Not like there is anything useful because most titles haven't released yet.

I always see those threads in the discussions feed but never participated before.
Anyway I won Dex here a couple of months ago, I downloaded it at August 31 played about 1 hr and got 1 achievement.. continued on Sep. 1st and I just 100% a moment ago.

Not sure if this will count as an entry for this month ... as I said never participated before so I'm still not fully sure how this event works.

Edit: is this right ? (the attached image)

Edit 2: Just noticed on the event page the starting date is 2019-08-31, so should I edit the "Stats before the start of the event" to zero zero ?

Sorry for the super late answer, was a bit busy today. Yep it is fine to submit that one. Here is the FAQ question about this situation and you can check the other ones too if anything else is unclear. If you have any more questions after that please feel free to ask.

It is set to 31th of August so people can submit games a bit before (and something with the server time isn't working properly). The official start of the month it is with the 1st of September.

You playtime has already been approved so if you wish you can request to join the Steam group. The giveaways will be visible on the website in a few days :)

Hi Mouse, to summarize I'd like to try finishing Terra Incognita Ch.1 -- I am less than halfway through the entire game as far as I can tell (link to sleuthing work). Since I did play a bit of it already, does that rule out the game entirely? I'm asking since I seem to recall a rule where it's okay to choose a game for the challenge as long as you're less than halfway through it.

Is it possible to enter with Saints Row 2? It should qualify because of the moddable tag but it doesn't have achievements. If yes, should I provide some screenshots when finished?
damn this game is such an aweful port! It crashed for me all the time, mostly when driving cars. But I had to drive cars because the city is too big. Then I realised there is a mod that fixes most problems. But that mod doesn't work with the german version because it is too heavily cut(which I happened to win). I was going to give up on the game but at last got the idea to look for an uncut patch - which existed and fixed the problem with the other mod, which fixed all(well mostly all) my problems with the game and now it's actually quite fun :D

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Sorry to hear you got so many problems with it but I am super glad it worked in the end :) And it kinda fits perfectly to the theme that you had to mod it so much :) As for the answer to your question: it is not a problem if it doesn't have achievement and some screenshots showing that you finished the game are always appreciated :)

Well I'm not mouse, just her work slave ;)
But if it comes with a game pack or as an extra game that you've won on SG I would think it counts. I was allowed to play both Faerie Solitaire and Fairie Solitaire Remastered, even though I only won Faerie Solitaire here and the Remastered version automatically gets activated with the same key.

Just let us know in the comment to your entry that it was activated with the game that you've won on SG (name of game would be greatly appreciated). Then I see no problems here.

Well since I do most of the initial game approval, except where it gets dicey and I cannot see for the life of me how the game could fit the theme or is from backlog without any explanation and there are enough unplayed wins that fit the theme, I think you are save, as long as you note somewhere why the game is in there.

And for the new theme, also all games that were won in October or 8+ months ago are eligible. I think those might be easier to find ;)
