And now my question is... do we lose the key or can we re-use it?

you don't lose the key, it remains valid and can be be used on an another account

this is not always the case, I did this on accident with a bundle I bought and the key became invalid.

Keys never become invalid. If they're used they're used. If they're invalid they were invalid in the first place.

Remember, keys are "invalid" if you have been locked out of redeeming keys (trying too many in short time).

I imagine he meant to say became "used". The point he was trying to make is that even if you own the game, you can sometimes still activate and waste the key.

For example, I received Alien Breed 2 from Steam's Summer Sale in 2011 yet I was still able to activate and essentially waste an Alien Breed 2 key.

I think this has to do with different versions of the game; region differences or whatever.

In any case, Steam will say you have successfully activated the key and it will then of course become "used".

Edit: I think someone said you can contact Steam support about activating a game you already own and they will then release the key.

No offence, but I don't think anyone cares for your theories especially when you can't back them with anything.

The reason is the giveaway and the key have different subid.

For example, if you already owned every game offered in a Humble Bundle, you'd still be able to activate the key as it has a different subid than the games you originally purchased even though they share the same appids.

Why do you always wanna fight on the forum? Why can't I post my theories if you're allowed to imagine things?

We only ended down this activating keys for games already owned-road because you were imagining stuff - it's not even related to OP's question...

I think the idea that I want to "fight on the forum" comes from the fact that people can't seem to accept the fact that they're wrong and get defensive when I correct them.

GamerPlava brings up a valid point stating that sometimes you can activate a key even if you already own the game. You tried to dismiss his statement due to him using the term "invalid" as opposed to "used" or "already redeemed". Rather then letting you misinform people I decided to back up his statement by further validating the fact. You chose to make up a theory as to why this happened so I once again corrected you with the proper information.

I'm sorry that you take offence to people correcting you.

EDIT: Feel free to delete your initial post and it'll get rid of all the following replies, it's a good way to cover up stupidity.

Heh, I like your edit. It reminds me of when you called me a wall who couldn't read :)

I don't feel I have posted any stupidity that needs covering up, and your corrections of me have more been supporting my theories than pointing out misinformation. Which is why I don't understand your need to argue - we're saying the same thing.

I thought that this only happened if the subscription of the second key had additional apps when compared to the first. Do you happen to have a source for this information?

Product already owned. Never will it say duplicate key if you own the game.

Unfortunately you cannot use this to verify if a key has been used or not.

Anyone who says you can, clearly has not tried it and is simply repeating incorrect information they had read somewhere.

No one has said it's possible to verify if the key has been used or not.

Please explain how this information would be relevant for a use other than that. That's clearly what he was hoping to accomplish.

It's too bad Steam can't just tell you "Product already owned - Key is valid" or something to that respect.

Or better yet, have the option for a game to be added to Inventory as a Steam Gift if you already own the game.
