What is your opinion on thrash metal?
Thrash is a pretty good place to start getting into metal. Definitely check out "The Big Four" of thrash:
-Metallica
-Slayer
-Anthrax
-Megadeth
-Pantera should be an honorable mention...Dimebag Darrell was one of the best guitarists of the last few decades :'(
I used to be totally into thrash and then when I went to college got more into all the weird death metal subgenres...

Oh I dunno, I listen to a lot of death metal these days but for me, melodic death metal is where it's at...I'm a sucker for good riffs/technical stuff/awesome solos and I think that's why I like melodic death so much. My favorite band is probably Dissection, and that's melodic black metal... I think there's a subgenre for everyone in metal, you just gotta look around and see what you like!
Dissection - Night's Blood - Melodic Black
Arch enemy - Ravenous - Melodeath
Dark Tranquillity - Cathode Ray Sunshine - Melodeath
In Flames - Jotun - Melodeath - These guys were one of the first melodic death bands, their older stuff is really good, but they changed their sound in the mid/late '00s and it's different
Amon Amarth - Twilight of the Thunder God - Death metal(?) - These guys are all around pretty awesome
Folk metal can be really hit or miss too, but there are some good bands out there!
Equilibrium - Blut Im Auge
Ensiferum - Heathen Throne - this song is long but pretty cool
I used to work for a radio station playing this stuff, so I could go on for a while about all the different bands I like :P

For death metal you HAVE to check out the best of the best ;)
I got into it with Death and Morbid Angel, but my all time favourites are Cannibal Corpse and Suffocation.
If you are into lower tempos, check Obituary and Six Feet Under.
If you want something faster, give a try to Dying Fetus, Deeds of Flesh and Nile.
If you look for something a bit more (anti)religion oriented, go for Deicide and Vital Remains
If you want some darker atmosphere, check Incantation and Immolation.
If you want straight up massacre and gore, try out Gorgasm, Devourment, Broken Hope.
Don't miss out on early Napalm Death too
Myself, I see melodic death metal as something closer to power metal than to thrash.

also, check out the swedish death metal scene from the early 90's. Bands like Entombed, Dismember, and Carnage.
Carcass and Bolt thrower are also highly recommended.
Check out Acid Bath too!

They mixed several genres together to form a very unique sound. Plus, Dax Riggs is an amazing vocalist and lyricist! Nothing quite like them.

I listen to Metallica a bit, but find their songs to be a bit slow for me sometimes. Normally I prefer the clean vocals mixed with the complimentary screaming, But I am weird. I listen to Amaranthe, Demon hunter, Wolves at the Gate, Fit for A King, and Alestorm mostly. fit fir a king is a bit heavy, and sometimes wolves at the gate is heavy as well, but the other vocals are incredible. Fireflight is another band I listen to, but they have pretty much moved onto hard rock and is very christian.
Listening to some slayer right now, and I can't say it's my favorite, but it isn't bad at all.
I am also interested in these subgenres, as if I am correct amaranthe and demon hunter have some songs in said category :p

Hmmm, check this out. It's a solo album by Jeff Loomis and has some crazy shredding in it
Have you ever listened to Opeth? They can be super heavy and then all of a sudden switch to clean vocals (ghost reveries album is solid) and some acoustic stuff mid song. Their vocalist is pretty talented

my selection or music in my library is pretty slim, I keep meaning to go on a YouTube hunt, but end up doing other things. Thanks for the music links.

being a (lousy) multi-instrumentalist (average skill in drums and piano, below average in electric guitar), I kinda prefer that Metallica is slightly slower than the rest of the big 4 - it means they're easier to follow lol
They're still quite fast though, and Lars speeds up even more live... :P
Heard of Cynic by the way? Progressive Death Metal on their first album Focus but now shifting away towards Progressive Rock/Metal. Focus was awesome though even though I found it hard to get into the vocoder vocals :P

It's not my favorite genre, but it has quite the history and a lot of good albums. Check Overkill, Kreator and Havok if you like straight-up thrash metal, Heathen if you feel like you want a little more progressive metal or Vektor if you want it mixed with some black metal (it's very technical though, amazing band).

Love it :)

Seen Jackyl saturday night :) Freaking awesome! Ya maybe not the hardest metal band, but I grew up on a lot of metal bands. "thrash" if you will.

When people say thrash, I say Pantera. My opinion is they were the best.

Not thrash metal, but you should check Devin Townsend songs, this guy is so talented. Also he is totally crazy (seriously, he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder :p). He has all kind of songs and I can't stop listening to his music. If you want some heavier stuff from him, check his old band Strapping Young Lad.
Also check his DVD The Retinal Circus. The girl that sings with him is "Anneke Van Giersbergen", and she is my favorite female metal voice :p
So yeah, that's my recommendation. Feel free to ignore it ;)

i usually listen to old school death metal or doom these days. Not much into thrash. However, check out Suicidal Tendencies and Exodus.

Already stumbled upon that around the same time I found the first song I linked :p There's this other one but I didn't wanna post another one of those.

I'm more into progressive metal like Pain of Salvation or Dream Theater but Pantera's cowboys from hell and Slayer's War Ensemble are great.

check out sludge metal, too. Bands like Eyehategod, Buzzov-en, Cavity, and Crowbar.
Windhand's "soma" album is amazing female-fronted doom.

Yeah, honestly I think that the big 4 should be expanded to include some more of the greats from that era. Kreator and Testament both had HUGE influences on thrash. Also, goatwhore rocks my socks :P

Well I didn't listen to any of the Thrash bands in a while, I liked always Megadeth, Anthrax, Pantera, don't like Metallica, Slayer that much thou, actually i really think Metallica sucks, but if you just started listening to music, and like metal i can give you some interesting bands to listen too, althou i'm more of a heavy/hard rock/rock kinda guy but here ya go:
Iced Earth - more of a mix of horror/power/thrash metal - always liked Matt Barlow on vocals (even had a chance to go to a concert when he came back to the band)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=46pb5-uo6RI
shit, it's harder than I thought, haven't listen to this kind of music in a while. So i just gonna give you some good classic bands (some may be more rock but it's a good thing to at least try to listen to them)
U.F.O. - Strangers in the night
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCWLM4U6vwg
Rainbow - Stargazer
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rVXy1OhaERY
Motorhead - Ace of Spades

A couple of months ago, I finally started to listen to music. I didn't really like pop, so as a joke one of my friends showed me heavy metal. I ended up finding and loving thrash, so now Slayer is my favorite band. I was wondering what your opinion on thrash metal is, so feel free to vote on the poll what you think, and if you hate thrash feel free to comment what your favorite genre is below.
