I have been having this issue too, i will post here if i find a solution.

It was the reason I downgraded to Win 7
I did like you did and looked all over the place for it. I never found an answer.

Right. If you don't like Windows products, use Linux and a Windows emulator for the games.

Ridiculous comparison / analogy, on so many levels..

Hahahahahahhahahahahahahahaha. Sorry, before I type out a reply, I gotta laugh..
Right. Exactly.

Changing to Win 7 isn't a solution. Win 7 is really a downgrade.

Actually I upgraded to Windows 8 for better perfomance in certain games. For first week I felt uncomfortable and planned to get around to installing a start menu. But after couple of more weeks I realized how bad the start menu was, kind of. I didn't need it apparently - I could access places faster through other things, than the start menu.

Huh, did you check your CPU usage?
Ctrl+Alt+Delete, Start task manager, click the Processes tab, click CPU to list based on CPU usage. Check to see if anything is using 95%-100%.
I used to have an issue with a windows program that would suddenly reach 96% CPU usage... Can't remember how I fixed it, though.

Maybe clear the cache by using Ccleaner as the amount of temporary files may have increased or maybe format the system. You can also do disk fragmentation and see if something is wrong with that part.Mostly it should be the fault of any software.

there was in fact an update 2 days ago. I only noticed it today due to task manager. I'm hoping the problem kinda go away by itself.

Normally disk usage is related to ram, once your pc runs out of ram it creates a page file, and windows will constantly be reading your hard drive to access that page file. With 16gb of ram installed make sure its at least being recognized by windows, just right click "Computer" from your start button and choose properties, ensure it says 16GB installed. If that's the case try this program, http://crystalmark.info/software/CrystalDiskInfo/index-e.html this will monitor your hard drive. If its not an SSD then you may have a wonky hard drive. My final solution would be a fresh install of windows 8 to see if its a software issue after you try those previous options.

How much RAM do you have ?
I personally disabled the superfetch service because that was loading too much stuff in my RAM whenever I closed almost anything that uses alot of RAM (hence removing the cache held by prefetch and was required to re-load it, therefore 100% disk usage for a while), which is even the browser... but I have only 2GB.
For 4GB or more you shouldn't disable that because you'll notice that programs start slower... unless you open and close high RAM using programs that force the cache to be unloaded and then re-loaded from HDD.

I have DDR2 so it's not really wise to buy more of that, I need to upgrade to DDR3 first.
And I don't want to wear out my flash drive on that, I tried it, didn't really make much diference in performance... and I am doing just fine without superfetch.

You can use resource monitor (resmon.exe) to see what process is using 100% disk usage

Use google they should say. Google has these sorts of answers they say. Don't ask random people on forums they say. But yet here we are. Since I have nothing productive besides that, I will make the halfhearted answer that if you delete system 32 you will not have to worry about disk usage. Will it create an even bigger problem? Sure. Will it solve the current problem? Kinda.

I prefer putting the computer on fire, it is a lot more cathartic and 100% guaranteed to solve any computer-related problem. In fact you could even generalize and say problems in general without being too wrong*.

But computers have built in fire walls. I mean that is what fire walls do, right? Stop the computer from being set on fire?

i also had 100% disk usage on windows 8.1 64bit, on idle (and no, there wasnt anything running on background like antivirus scan or anything else), and i remember i was also searching on google about it
next day, my HDD died, it couldnt boot windows anymore
but i had warranty on it, so they gave me new HDD in 1 week and it came with windows 7 professional installed, so i kept win 7

Personally, I would install Advanced System Care. It will clear and fix tons of stuff on your windows. Might solve your issue.

I am having a problem with windows 8 where my disk usage is unusually high.
similar cases like mine
Does any of you have any idea how to fix it? 1 hour of google has not been working for me. for a 16gb rig I should not have this spike of disk usage.
downgrade to win 7 they say, you will not have the same problem they say

So I did nothing for like 1 hour and now it's getting slightly better. There's no huge spike that reaches 100% but there still are random spikes at 60-80% even though I'm doing nothing except listening to music
