I am having a problem with windows 8 where my disk usage is unusually high.

similar cases like mine

Does any of you have any idea how to fix it? 1 hour of google has not been working for me. for a 16gb rig I should not have this spike of disk usage.

downgrade to win 7 they say, you will not have the same problem they say

--

So I did nothing for like 1 hour and now it's getting slightly better. There's no huge spike that reaches 100% but there still are random spikes at 60-80% even though I'm doing nothing except listening to music

It was the reason I downgraded to Win 7
I did like you did and looked all over the place for it. I never found an answer.

Right. If you don't like Windows products, use Linux and a Windows emulator for the games.

Um, if earlier version of the Windows is a step back, Linux is literally shooting yourself in the foot.

I used Linux 5 years, still sort of use it in the work, but please, never again in home.

Ridiculous comparison / analogy, on so many levels..

Like it or not, using obsolete systems means more and more stuff works badly or doesn't work at all as people develop first for new, optimized system, not its old brother no one in charge likes anymore. It's a fact.

Hahahahahahhahahahahahahahaha. Sorry, before I type out a reply, I gotta laugh..

  1. Win7 is by no means, not by any stretch of the imagination, "obsolete". To even use that word is ludicrous, albeit quite funny.
  2. Software doesn't magically deteriorate with time, only support for and usage of said software does. And let's look at WinXP. Now, how many users kept using that? How long did official support for that last? How long did people successfully use it before running into insurmountable issues with software they were using, like games not working, where the dev didn't want to make the patches required to make it work on XP?
  3. "..more and more stuff works badly or doesn't work at all" - actually, most games and software being made for Windows work entirely fine on Win7. Win8 has far more games and other software having weird problems working properly or even running at all, now.
  4. "..people develop first for new, optimized system.." - Win8 isn't much better than Win7 in terms of performance, in some cases even having strange issues such as enormously high disk usage (which also wears out your drives over time, yay!) As for "people develop first for it"? Umm, no? There's only a handful of games and software that won't run on Win7 and only on Win8, and in the case of games, 99% of the time it's due to the arbitrary way they're forcing people to upgrade to Win8 by probably limiting use of DX12 to Win8. See here for recent news on that.
  5. "..its old brother no one in charge likes anymore. It's a fact." Oh, really now? No one "in charge" likes Win7 anymore? No one in charge likes an OS that has far, far more users still on it than Win8, and has far less current issues running software? That makes perfect sense! </sarcasm> I'd love to see proof of this "fact", anywhere what so ever. Provide me one shred of evidence for this, even a tiny bit of it.

Right. Exactly.

I used to have this problem with Win 7. With Win 8 it stopped. Maybe it is because of the fresh install.

Changing to Win 7 isn't a solution. Win 7 is really a downgrade.

Actually I upgraded to Windows 8 for better perfomance in certain games. For first week I felt uncomfortable and planned to get around to installing a start menu. But after couple of more weeks I realized how bad the start menu was, kind of. I didn't need it apparently - I could access places faster through other things, than the start menu.

Huh, did you check your CPU usage?
Ctrl+Alt+Delete, Start task manager, click the Processes tab, click CPU to list based on CPU usage. Check to see if anything is using 95%-100%.
I used to have an issue with a windows program that would suddenly reach 96% CPU usage... Can't remember how I fixed it, though.

Maybe clear the cache by using Ccleaner as the amount of temporary files may have increased or maybe format the system. You can also do disk fragmentation and see if something is wrong with that part.Mostly it should be the fault of any software.

Normally disk usage is related to ram, once your pc runs out of ram it creates a page file, and windows will constantly be reading your hard drive to access that page file. With 16gb of ram installed make sure its at least being recognized by windows, just right click "Computer" from your start button and choose properties, ensure it says 16GB installed. If that's the case try this program, http://crystalmark.info/software/CrystalDiskInfo/index-e.html this will monitor your hard drive. If its not an SSD then you may have a wonky hard drive. My final solution would be a fresh install of windows 8 to see if its a software issue after you try those previous options.

Sounds like search indexing, but could be just about anything that constantly uses the hard drive like anitvirus. Disable services and programs that start up and see if it has any effect.

Stop Superfetch Service.........

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

How much RAM do you have ?

I personally disabled the superfetch service because that was loading too much stuff in my RAM whenever I closed almost anything that uses alot of RAM (hence removing the cache held by prefetch and was required to re-load it, therefore 100% disk usage for a while), which is even the browser... but I have only 2GB.

For 4GB or more you shouldn't disable that because you'll notice that programs start slower... unless you open and close high RAM using programs that force the cache to be unloaded and then re-loaded from HDD.

If you have only 2 gb you really should get more or use flash drive boosting, sorry.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I have DDR2 so it's not really wise to buy more of that, I need to upgrade to DDR3 first.

And I don't want to wear out my flash drive on that, I tried it, didn't really make much diference in performance... and I am doing just fine without superfetch.

Use google they should say. Google has these sorts of answers they say. Don't ask random people on forums they say. But yet here we are. Since I have nothing productive besides that, I will make the halfhearted answer that if you delete system 32 you will not have to worry about disk usage. Will it create an even bigger problem? Sure. Will it solve the current problem? Kinda.

I prefer putting the computer on fire, it is a lot more cathartic and 100% guaranteed to solve any computer-related problem. In fact you could even generalize and say problems in general without being too wrong*.

Off course it does, the extra fire will quickly finish the job thus instead of having "the problem of a computer being on fire" you have "the problem of a computer that was on fire".
