DS is completely different from anything you mentioned. There is no pause, but enemies are in the same place every time, so your planning just gets stretched over multiple runs, until you have it figured out. Very slow steady growth, similar to fallout 1, in that you get occasional solid boost from nice item, but it's mostly little increases over time. Also, the story exists, but it is more of an inference, not the focus of the game. Batman games are ok, but enemies are pretty dumb. I would definitely play BL over far cry.

Do you know what is a ARPG? Yes you do, you talk about it Do you know what is a turn based ARPG? Yes you do, you talked about it. Now, mix those two... Keep mixing... Keep mixing... Now you have something 'different', now you add a little bit of "your mistakes will get you kill", add "greedy = death" and add "if you play in a rush, you are dead". More or less, that is dark souls. It's like hidden turn. They hit you, you block or evade... then you hit. However, if you run out of stamina, if you hit more than you can handle.... YYYyyeeep, you die.
Dying is part of the game and it's not something to be ashamed of. Once you know the tricks you'll say it's an easy game. Promise. How can be hard and unforgiving a game that only punishes you when you did something wrong? However, it's esentially, an ARPG.
Still has plenty of playerbase on PC. I'm currently playing the 2nd one on PC and is very much alive. Yes, you can COOP if it's hard.
Lore is fucking amazing and brilliant. I could talk about it for hours (yes, i'm a fucking idiot about it)
Now, if you want bondage... You may have it, but in a liiiight way (sorry). Not an ARPG at all. An action adventure with QTEs. Combat is press the right button in the right time. They add some sandbox stuff on City (the 2nd one and a good game, but that's it) and they polished some stuff and added the car in the third, however this game came out with a looooooooooooooot of problems and is a little bit hated. I think the beginning / first half of the game is probably the best batman videogame product.
Any of the Metal Gear Solids - just so I can understand the memes... but I do not have the patience for stealth eyes the Thief games regrettably
I don't have PS3 so I stopped on metal gear solid 3. I have no idea how it is now, although I wish i can play V and watch 4 on youtube or something ._.
Far Cry.
This is a FPS and I don't know much more, sorry.
Just Cause
Delusional extremely funny ARPG... Joking, is an action sandbox. PEW PEW POM POM PUM BOKAAAAM KABOOOM. Yes, funny, chaos, shotings, over and over.
Borderlands - should I keep playing? The whole universe is so different and the mobs so unusual they scare the crap outta me XD
Yes? I love borderlands and I think BL2 is better. Played both more than once, gained all achievements. I like to play alone and with friends, etc. I like it, but Is nothing more than a 'diabloesque' with guns and is focused in grinding grinding and more grinding in higher levels... That's not for everybody.
If you like that type of humor, play it... If you don't... Well, play it if you bought it :( but you'll suffer, because thats borderlands
EXPLOOOSIOOOOONS
EDIT 1 IM VERY SORRY, THE COMMENT FORMATTING IS EXTREMELY POOR, BUT I DON'T UNDERSTAND IT
EDIT 2: I'm a little bit surprised you haven't mentioned XCOM: Enemy Unknown (Enemy Within much better, if possible) or XCOM2
EDIT3: I'm sorry to write again but I just remember the Shadowrun series. Did you know it? Turn Based RPGs with lot of text and decision making. I would say skip Returns because everything it did right dragonfall did better. Boston is just action RPG mostly online. Just play Dragonfall and the best of the series, Hong Kong.
Comment has been collapsed.
I'm starting to get the idea from comments here (and yours), that I should try:
(What is it about 2s that seem to be better? ;D )
And no, I've not tried XCOM Enemy Unknown - looks like I have to now! (Weird, for some reason it wasn't on my wishlist. That's been corrected now ;P )
And I've played all the Shadowrun to their completion, yes. I agree that Dragonfall is the best. HK was okay, maybe it was because I'm used to the setting and was not as 'exotic' to me as it was to other people, but the story was not bad :)
Comment has been collapsed.
For me HK was better, but Dragonfall felt 'easier' to get into. Too many chinese names drove me crazy. But I think its a better game and better script.
Dark Souls is, normally, the best one, at least for most people. Nostalgia and being the first is a huge factor, normally people didn't play Demon Souls, etc. If you ask me, it's a great game, it's a great experience, if you die it's 90% your fault, it's pure trial and error... However is clunky, it's a bad port, you'll need at least 3 mods to be able to play it correctly on PC and despite what people tells, is made to be played with one handed weapon and a shield (you can play it with whatever, but the original idea is that). Lore is 'easy' once you put the pieces, the story is there, it's just told weirdly.
Dark Souls 2 has a lot of hate from the fanboys of DS1 and only because it was made by 'Team B' because team A was making Bloodborne. I can understand why people likes less DS2 but I can't and I won't understand the hateful critics because DS2 is a great game.
The lore is more dense, more hard to understand and more confusing, however is also very good. Playstyle, combat system, etc, it's less clunky but slowier, you need to think before, you need to use more than your main weapon and you need to be careful. Bosses are easier too, however some regular enemies can be a pain. They introduced an actually interesting hollowing system (You miss a % of HP when you die), wich people hated but it was taken from Demon Souls (the first soul games on PS3) and it was UNFORGIVING in that game... Nobody critisize that, but people got man in DS2, see what I mean with this game? It's a very good game, has very good mechanics but also flaws...
Dark Souls 3. Haven't played it, however it takes a loot from bloodborne. Is faster than ds2 and ds1 combined, managing stamina it's not a problem and it's called 'Dark Rolls 3' or something like that. While in Ds2 you could rolle two times and get killed because you didn't managed your stamina, Ds3 allows you to roll and roll and roll :P. It's directly related to Ds1 and has some vibes and references to DS2, however is more like a continuation of ds1
Far Cry 3 because it was the first one who made a good open world I guess. The one from the 80s (blood dragon) is weirder, non "real" but has a lot of love. The third one seems to be the most loved because the rest of them are just copies in different atmospheres
Borderlands is, imho, a good game but is suuuuper repetitive and you'll need DLCs to see a good ending. I mean, the main game is so stupid... Borderlands 2 has a better main story, tons of humor, tons of quests.
Except Far cry 3, I have hundreds of hours on those games, so maybe my opinion it's not very objective :P

:P
e.g. in Dark Souls, after finishing the two first areas of the game you can save some character. He is a pyromancer, somekind of fire mage. Piromancies are strong spells based on fire made by the witch of Izalith. He is happy you saved him, he shows true gratitude and you can find him later in the "main camp", when he is still happy and he can upgrade your pyro glove (somehow a flaming hand you need to use to use those fire spells).
Later, if you are playing as a pyromancer, you can find another NPC, a master of pyromancies and she can teach you powerful fire spells. If you talk to her and become a better pyromancer and talk with your rescued friend he will notice how powerful you are. Better than him, in fact. He will ask you to show him your glove.
Normally in Dark Souls there are hidden questlines, because there are only YES or NO choices (lol) and 90% of the time pressing YES is the correct answer, but sometimes saying YES is the fuck up. If you say yes and show the glove to him, to one of your only friends in that unforgiving game, he will got jealous of you! He will left the camp and go to search for that pyromancer by himself, turning hollow in the process (ie, insane, when he lost his hope and humanity), turning into a jealous zombie.
Only because you said 'yes', insteand of 'no, you need to chose your own path'.
How can you NOT be into that atypical writing for an RPG? The fact that you need to watch or learn something after the game because the story is told by item descriptions and weird dialogue lines... It's different writing, not best, not the worst, just different.
And if you have troubles with some areas there always will be people willing to help (instead in the offline areas :P)

Have you played XCOM?
What about Blackguards?
I'd also recommend Massive Chalice, Pillars of Eternity, by the way SHADOWRUN series is great! Have played only Shadowrun Returns so far.
And Divinity: Original Sin! These are like Wasteland 2 as far as I'm concerned... _)
Games I've played and loved which are RPGs as nice or better than Skyrim?
Morrowind and Oblivion as previous titles in TES xD Gothic series, The Witcher series, Risen series and Two Worlds series.
Your friends' list contains quite popular games but they seem to bee out of your sandbox, almost nothing common with RPGs or slow-paced games :
IMHO...
Comment has been collapsed.
XCOM - not the recent ones. Blackguards.. eh.. it kinda struck me as an ARPG, which doesn't really appeal to me. Massive Chalice too.
You.. enjoyed the Risen series? I tried to like it but it was a bit clunky to me. Two Worlds series games are also on my wishlist, but kinda far down ;)
...What is "Weird stealth" ;D
Comment has been collapsed.
Well, when I've finished the Gothic series I discovered that there's a game called Risen by the same devs so I decided to play and the first game is great, I'm still replaying it from time to time, didn't like the second one at all and still have to try the third but as I understand, Risen3 is more like Risen1 than Risen2 so I might like it as well.

I've played all of the main dark souls series(1,2,3), as someone who was very reserved about getting into a game that proclaims itself to be that difficult. I have personally loved it, as the dark fantasy themes, the combat, the worlds, are all very well put together and form a very engaging experience (although it can be frustrating 'at times'). It is a difficult game to pick up, but once you do it's one of the most rewarding gaming experiences I have ever had.
I've played a decent amount of Far Cry 3 to tell you it's a great game, very well balanced and optimized, and has very good action in it. Generally a solid open world fps rpg.
Borderlands is easily one of my favorite game series of all time, with borderland's 2 being the peak of the series. I loved it, both singleplayer and multiplayer and if I could afford to give away nothing but borderlands 2 goty editions (because the content DLC are amazing) for this site, I would.

Whoa. You love Andromeda? Bold words, my friend ;)
Seriously., I've played the ME trilogy and enjoyed it... with the ME3 Extended Ending edition. Honestly not played Andromeda. Waiting for the price to go down to my min 10USD ;D
Drakensang is indeed in my wishlist too :)
To be honest, I didn't like NW1, and hated the controls in 2. Finished 1, never could play NW2 past a few hours before uninstalling. Which is a pity because I liked the characters and char creation system.
Comment has been collapsed.
I totally don't understand whole hate on Andromeda. In my opinion if You will immerse in the universe and take what it offers it is the best ME game. The saddest part is that we won't get dlc's and with that it could be even better game. Graphics are amazing, optimalization too. I played from early acces to 10 hours version and form day 1 of release and didn't get any face bugs. And game was just blast.
With NW series I understand You :D
But Divinity is good RPG and soon there will be second one.
Comment has been collapsed.
From official posts they moved most of the team to work on other projects and remaining people are focused on multiplayer addons. I hope they'll change their mind and we'll get quarians dlc at least and back to couple planets. :D Ehh maby I'll play it again and leave waiting for DLCs. :D
As it goes for patches, 1.09 was released recently. And it patched up further faces, little bugs in mechanics and so on. :)
Price is a bit high but it's quite new game for if You play like me, visiitng every corner of map, for over 100h.
Comment has been collapsed.
They will not, EA put BioWare mostly to work on Anthem. Since Andromeda was below expectations and had a lukewarm rating beyond the usual paid-off mediums, they decided to abandon it and focus on Anthem now, hoping they can outsell Destiny 2. Although who thought that giving the same guys another MP-focused game after the Old Republic MMO failed at launch so hard they had to modify its entire business model is a very interesting question.
Comment has been collapsed.
I've actually got Borderlands 1 because it was offered free at some point.
And apparently I don't have a soul, because cutesy cartoony characters/games don't seem to resonate with me ;) I suppose I should give Borderlands a try. And thank you for recommending the Best Reviewer on Earth!
Comment has been collapsed.
4 of those titles are shooters, you enjoy shooters, you will enjoy those. Also you missed Fallout Tactics to complete the old school, good school fallout series. And how can you not expect Wasteland 2 to be good when Wasteland 1 was so good to begin with? And why didnt you list Arcanum as one of the played games? Its a must play aswell. And you shouldnt have gotten scared of Skyrim or System Shock, those are not horror games.
Comment has been collapsed.
I've just heard people say that Wasteland 2 was missing the soul of 1, but I have been pleasantly surprised :)
As for why I didn't like Arcanum... I can't be expected to list every RPG I ever played ;D It's a long list! XD
System Shock is totally horror ;P Or at least a horror RPG.
Comment has been collapsed.
It must have been a rare minority you cared about because the majority loves this game to death and constantly replays it.
Shame you didnt like it, its gorgeus, visualy and audialy.
Okay, mild horror then, but Dead Space, System Shocks ''sequel'', now that is proper horror, also must play.
Comment has been collapsed.
Did you try pillars of eternity? I just started that, and am enjoying it so far.

Do give Darks Souls III a shot!! You'll either LOVE it, or HATE it. There's always the refund option, tho I've never used it, and just make sure to keep it under 2 hrs if you're gonna refund. Tho I do have to say, took me three hours for just the tutorial boss so hahaxDD
Borderlands 2 is great. Love it for the loot. Have yet to try the others but I heard BL2's the best one.
Haven't really played the others but since I'm recommending games, try Torchlight II and tho I know you're not that into stealth, Dishonored is my bae, give it a look?:)

Batman Arkham Asylum has a demo on Steam you can try out, I did and quite liked it, and I usually don't care about Batmam. No idea about other games, I'm more into JRPG than Western. I do want to also try Metal Gear Solid games some day though, it sounds batshit insane which is definitely my kind of game XD.
Comment has been collapsed.
I don't know about Metal Gear Solid, but most of the games you list have exploration as a pretty big key factor. Do you like going around in open world games and finding your own adventures?
I liked Batman because of Combat mechanics and the side stuff that you can find while just wandering around.
I liked Borderlands (1&2) because I'm a big fan of shooters, and those games try to make it humorous. BD2 has a DLC char Gauge which can kill just by aiming specific weapons at the floor. Yes the floor.
I suggest skipping just cause 1, and go straight to 2. Lots more variety and the end stage for the first game is just annoying.
Turn-based, I would suggest Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky series. Got the 2nd game free and bought the first, but it was worth it.

Any of the Dark Souls series - I heard Dragon's Dogma is a bit like this?
It's quite different from Dragon's Dogma. What Dark Souls does well is that it creates a world for you to explore, and it does not just hand you everything on a silver platter, you need to puzzle a lot of things about the world together yourself, but it's not so obtuse that you can't figure things out on your own.
The gameplay itself is something that's a bit different. At its core, it's an ARPG like Dragon's Dogma or Divinity 2, but there's a lot more "weight" behind everything you do, everything is deadly, so you need to weight your every move. Which can be a bit frustrating at first, when you don't have a firm grasp on how you should play, but it does become easier later on. The game has a reputation for being super hard, and while it is indeed a challenging game, it feels like people are constantly overstating how hard it is. It's become a meme.
So yes, it's absolutely worth a try, but I can't promise that you'll like Dark Souls.
Any of the Batman Arkham Asylum, whatever Arkham games (man Batsy sure does like being caged up or something, does he? Bet he likes leather bondage)
These are Metroidvania games. If you enjoy exploring, and having more of the map open up as you find new tools, then you'll like these. They're not very hard, which may or may not be a good thing, depending on you. I'm still having issues with Arkham Knight, making it unplayable, but the other ones are fine. Asylum is my personal favourite of the lot. It's the least open, but I think it does the whole progression thing better than the later ones.
Any of the Metal Gear Solids - just so I can understand the memes... but I do not have the patience for stealth eyes the Thief games regrettably
The stealth in the MGS series is a lot less punishing than say Thief or Hitman. You're a soldier, and you can defend yourself just fine. These games are quirky, but quite enjoyable. Just make sure that you're fine with lengthy cutscenes and strange stories.
MGS 1,2 & 5 have seen PC releases. MGS 1 & 2 are kinda similar, but 5 is a vastly different game. I would recommend trying 1 and if you don't like it, still don't give up on 5. It's a fun series.
Far Cry
Now this is a series that has changed a lot. Far Cry 1 is a more open shooter than what's the norm, but it's not a true open world game. The story is... well, a thing, but it's not good. Might be worth checking out, but some elements might drive you bonkers. And it's quite telling that so many I've talked to who claim to like this game don't know what I'm talking about when I mention the monsters.
Far Cry 2 is a completely different game. It's more open world, but far more serious in tone. You're in a war-thorn part of Africa, and get presented with some of the issues that this region has in the real world. Also, to represent that you're in a part of the world where supplies are scarce, your weapons are not perfectly reliable.
And then we have the Far Cry 3 and onwards part, which goes more into wacky hijinks mode. Big explosions, over the top (but quite memorable) villains and you get to fight sharks with a knife. All these games are pretty darn similar, if you've played one, you've played them all. Even the difference between Far Cry Blood Dragon and Far Cry Primal is surprisingly small, despite one taking place in the future 80's, and the other one during the stone age.
Just Cause
I've not really played this series. Just don't play the first one. Seriously, don't play the first one, it's terrible.
Borderlands - should I keep playing? The whole universe is so different and the mobs so unusual they scare the crap outta me XD
If you're having fun, sure, if not, then nope. Borderlands 2 is a lot better than the first one, but I thought the game got kinda repetitive.
Comment has been collapsed.
I always recomend the Batman Arkham series, but it barely has some RPG progression thrown on top of a bunch of other mechanics, I wouldn't call it an RPG. I would say that Asylum is a 3D metroidvania with a focus on stealth and combat more than platforming.
City and Origins are more of an open world one-night-in-the-life-of-Batman simulator, carrying all the mechanics from asylum but with a radically different level design when it comes to the world map, although the more linear sections still have the same desing aproach.
I have yet to play Knight, that seems to go even further into the sandbox style of gameplay, or Blackgate, that apears to be a more traditional mtroidvania in 2.5D. Not sure of what the VR one is even supposed to be and probably won't play it, at least not in the foreseeable future.
So in short the Arkham series is more of a continuity than a strict series of sequels, at least give it a go to Asylum, it still is the best Batman game I played so far.

Thank you everyone for your amazing feedback! From what I gather, I should try:
I didn't ask for recommendations but got a ton of them anyway! ;D

I play and enjoy the same games you do, so I feel I may be in a good position to give you some advice:
Dark Souls series - Not really like Dragon's Dogma, outside of both being having similar action RPG combat. Dark Souls doesn't have pawns, or quests, or towns, or climbing up onto bosses, or much story unless you read each and every item description to try to piece together some lore. Dark Souls is much slower, more lethal, and features much more repetition. Dragon's Dogma is much more accessible. I enjoyed Dark Souls' combat and bosses, but every trash mob being able to kill you, combined with everything respawning when you die or save, and having to re-clear the same section over and over again to get to the part where you're struggling made me lose interest.
Batman Arkham Asylum - This is the game to start with, and I loved it. Great combat, story, and feel of playing as Batman. If you have any interest in Batman at all, I think you'll like it too.
Metal Gear Solids - Absolutely stealth games, and thus you may not like them. The Phantom Pain would be the best one to try, but again, very stealth based.
Far Cry - Do you like first person shooters? If so, you'll probably like them, as they're great FPS games.
Just Cause - Fun and silly third-person shooter. JC 2 is the one to start with, and it's dirt cheap on sale. It doesn't sound up your alley, but you may like it.
Borderlands - I loved these games co-op, but would have probably gotten bored of them solo. If you can find someone to play with, I highly recommend them - particularly Borderlands 2 and the Tiny Tina DLC for it.
Comment has been collapsed.
Any of the Dark Souls series - dont bother they are hard as shit and not cuase they are "hard" but more because of glitches and the fact your move takes 1.5sec to pull off and the bosses takes 0.5sec
.
Any of the Batman Arkham Asylum, just play the most recent or the one that you think looks the most interesting because they all feel the same just in different settings. they are fun though
Any of the Metal Gear Solids - good but i'm not a stealth person so i don't get much out of these games but my friend play them so i know the series well. for a turn based rpg player i'm not sure how well you may take to them.
Far Cry - on my backlog so i can't comment
Just Cause - this game is stupid fun with the absurd stuff you can do.
Borderlands - this game is so much fun. if you got friends into it i'ed try to beat it with them.
have you looked into xcom or xcom 2?

Hiya folks :)
As you might be able to tell from the graph below, for years I've been a strictly RPG or turn-based gal. I like my gaming experiences slow(er) and steady, being able to pause or take my time contemplating my moves. My absolute favourite games are Planescape Torment, Dragon Age Origins and tentatively, Inquisition, the Fallout 1 and 2 series. I'm currently playing Wasteland 2 (enjoying this more than I expected), and Dragon's Dogma Dark Arisen (which I like, especially with the help of pawns saving my ass ;D )
And then there's the RPGs that are kinda more 'actiony', which is basically first person games like Fallout 3, Skyrim, System Shock 2. System Shock 2 scared the crap outta me when I played it in my twenties, and I'm still amazed that I got to the end because I absolutely do not like consistent horror in my games. The draugr in Skyrim was so much NOPE when I first started out, but now I'm a Skyrim vet and I've played the game waaaay too many hours ;) Skyrim ranks up there as being one of my fave games despite the flaws and shallow quest system.
I do not enjoy Action RPGs at all. Dungeon Siege, Diablo, Borderlands... I dunno, I tried to enjoy them but for some reason I just couldn't get into it. Mind you I probably just haven't had the money to spend on the right kind of good ARPGs, whatever that means.
Here's my question! My friends have been raving about the following games, and I am so highly curious about them. But in my some 20, 30 years of (limited) game experience, I am highly doubtful if I can really get into it. They are:
I'd like your two cents, everyone, should I give any of the above a try? I make it a point on Steamgifts to only enter for games I would actually play. But I keep seeing Dark Souls staring at me in the Recommended lists ;) Out of all of them, it seems I could possibly like Dark Souls.. maybe. I enjoy games with stories.
Edit - NOTE! There seems to be some miscommunication here. I am very well aware that the games listed are not full RPGs. I just wanted your opinions as to whether you all think I would enjoy them given the kind of games I've played and liked ;D
(Wow, you made it this far? Have a cookie ^^ )
