From your list. I can give the following comments:
Dark Souls - I'd have to second pretty much what everyone's said so far, difficult, grindy, great atmosphere (which might turn you off, if you find Borderlands mobs scary, the unholy fuckers you find in DS are quite something else) and overall recommendable if you don't mind a steep learning curve and are willing to take the time to learn how it wants you to play.
--If you do want to give them a spin, I might recommend doing what I did to ease myself into this kind of games: play Salt & Sanctuary, since it's pretty much 2D Dark Souls, and in my case, being more used to platformers, was a pretty good intro to this kind of gameplay.
The Arkham Series - It's ok, though I'd actually start with Arkham City, due to the mechanics being quite similar, having an open world city to explore, and the story being far and away better than the first game.
Metal Gear Solids - Haven't played them so can't comment, however, you might want to look into Dishonored as well.
Far Cry - 3 is really fun if you don't get bored of the gameplay loop, still I got like 60 hours from it in single player, so I still can recommend.
Borderlands - YES! The first can get stale, but the second one is a must play for me. Maybe skip The PreSequel, was kinda meh.
As for ARPGs, here's a list I can give you of great games on the genre:
Torchlight 1 & 2. In my opinion they not only equal, but surpass the original Diablo (and were actually made by some of the same team)
Kingdoms of Amalur - You mentioned above the game gave you a Fable vibe, and actually it kinda does when I think about it. Best I can say its Fable done right, with a fun hack and slash combat system.
Deus Ex Series (sans 2, and the mobile one) - The first is a must play for anyone who's ever gamed.
Knights of the Old Republic I & II - Dunno if mentioned before, but they're also legendary.
"Tales of" Series - Also pretty good games with a fun and stimulating combat system.
Valdis Story Abyssal City - I pretty much always recommend this game to everyone. 2D action game with rpg elements, Metroidvania progression, fun and challenging combat, awesome cartoon-style graphics (think Dust an Elysian Tale, which I also recommend), and quite a lot of replayability with 4 characters with different combat styles each.

Hiya folks :)
As you might be able to tell from the graph below, for years I've been a strictly RPG or turn-based gal. I like my gaming experiences slow(er) and steady, being able to pause or take my time contemplating my moves. My absolute favourite games are Planescape Torment, Dragon Age Origins and tentatively, Inquisition, the Fallout 1 and 2 series. I'm currently playing Wasteland 2 (enjoying this more than I expected), and Dragon's Dogma Dark Arisen (which I like, especially with the help of pawns saving my ass ;D )
And then there's the RPGs that are kinda more 'actiony', which is basically first person games like Fallout 3, Skyrim, System Shock 2. System Shock 2 scared the crap outta me when I played it in my twenties, and I'm still amazed that I got to the end because I absolutely do not like consistent horror in my games. The draugr in Skyrim was so much NOPE when I first started out, but now I'm a Skyrim vet and I've played the game waaaay too many hours ;) Skyrim ranks up there as being one of my fave games despite the flaws and shallow quest system.
I do not enjoy Action RPGs at all. Dungeon Siege, Diablo, Borderlands... I dunno, I tried to enjoy them but for some reason I just couldn't get into it. Mind you I probably just haven't had the money to spend on the right kind of good ARPGs, whatever that means.
Here's my question! My friends have been raving about the following games, and I am so highly curious about them. But in my some 20, 30 years of (limited) game experience, I am highly doubtful if I can really get into it. They are:
I'd like your two cents, everyone, should I give any of the above a try? I make it a point on Steamgifts to only enter for games I would actually play. But I keep seeing Dark Souls staring at me in the Recommended lists ;) Out of all of them, it seems I could possibly like Dark Souls.. maybe. I enjoy games with stories.
Edit - NOTE! There seems to be some miscommunication here. I am very well aware that the games listed are not full RPGs. I just wanted your opinions as to whether you all think I would enjoy them given the kind of games I've played and liked ;D
(Wow, you made it this far? Have a cookie ^^ )
