Maybe a method to show users wish-lists?

So a gifter can gift to what the users want, instead of the other way round?
Use the same kind of system, but in the opposite manner.

i.e.
User joins wishlist and the points are removed
Portal 2 - Wanted by: x Users
and theres a gift button which sends it to a random user in that list.

But this is a list that doesn't expire.

Maybe some issues with points etc but it could possibly be a way to make gifting more targeted?

That is a great idea actually! However it would require a complete change for this site because it works in a complete different manner.

Not a complete change maybe a different section?

And I was thinking about it, if a game changes value (normally drops) then anyone who is still in the wish list can get the difference given back to them.

It could be added as an additional feature, yes, but it would act as a complete different site in my eyes. I see it as a completely different way of gifting games.

Possibly use the users wishlists to rank the most wished for games [top 25-100] and show it on the stats page and the giveaway creation page to serve as a suggestion. It'll show to gifters major desires of the community. It'll ensure bigger turnouts and could posibly drive down the number of /original/ portal giveaways. tease ;P But they will be mere suggests and will not govern what the gift wants to make a giveaway for.

Both methods are vaild solutions. Maybe make a suggestion on the traditional gift creation page that X Users in the desires section want the game you are going to make a giveaway for do you want to make an instant selection out these people? But one issue with a desires section is users would have to verify they are still actively watching the site every X weeks or couple months so one on the list who wins is inactive and doesn't claim their prize or have it auto pick after a week of selection if unclaimed. This method would do without a wishlist and just have a list of all the games giftable in the disires section to subscribe to. I don't know of a way to regulate this section rather then giving you X points ever so many days (only useable in the desires section) which you can use to subscribe to games so everyone cannot subscribe to all the games all at once. They have to earn it.

P.P.S. Sorry for adding more there was a flood of thoughts that came to me after.

Yeah, if the gifter wanted to gift that game then there would already be a user gueue for it and speeding up gifting. Also if a gifter doesn't want to gift that then they dont but it saves then gifting a game that nobody wants.

You just don't want to make it too hands off, else people will subscribe to the games they want and disappear and lose interest in the site. So it would have to stand beside the current system.

Possibly remove them if they don't login once every two weeks (possibly allowing for a vacation mode of upto 30days?)?

My thoughts is the a user goes I want Game "Portal2"
The systems then goes "Portal2" is currently 50points and removes them the the user.
The gifter then sees the list for people who want "Portal2" and says gift.
The winner is then removed form the system once the verify that they have received the gift, after 1 week of not recieveing it, it is then regifted.
If in the mean time the price of "Portal2" drops fo say 30points, everyone still on that list is refunded 20points.
It should be a self regulating style as its requres no imput apart form the initial I want that game and then I have that game.
But this wishlist can only be entered if you want to enter it and not automatic.
