Wanna Laugh? Anime style

I don't know; I think it's fairly easy to tell the difference between good and bad Japanese voice acting.

Ideally, I prefer watching everything in their original dubbing (which for anime usually means Japanese dubbing with English subtitles for me) because it's usually the best quality. The original voice actors usually put the most effort into their acting and it sounds more believable. There's actual emotion behind the characters. And certain things like references to Japanese culture are often lost in english-dubbed anime because they try to adapt it to American culture instead. That makes for weird conflicts between the voice acting and animations sometimes and often has me raising an eyebrow.

It's like watching a martial arts movie, but rather than them speaking Chinese, they're dubbed in English and their lips poorly match what the voices are saying. It just looks wrong and is enough to bother me. Everything is just better watched as they were originally intended, in my opinion.

I used to think the same thing until I accidentally bought a movie that was subbed rather than dubbed, and I enjoyed the movie enough that I watched it a few times and finally came to realize exactly what TimidTofu's saying. You can still tell whether someone's acting is good or bad, and the dialogue all makes more sense because it's not something that's been edited for cultural differences or simply to make the lip movement match up. The Japanese also have certain ideas of how these character archetypes should act & sound which is different from western expectations so the voices usually fit the character better as well.
