Amsterdam specific will always be more expensive then a normal city.

Hostel is cheap but not that luxurious.

You can find some great deals on hotelspecials (for me it's hotelspecials.be)

Apart from that don't know if you looked into ibis hotels since they have a budget series which is still nice :)

When I was in Amsterdam last year (with 5 friends) we stayed in a hostel for two nights and it cost us about €400 so €300 should definitely be possible, especially since prices should be lower in April/May than in July
