I thought this thread was about Minecraft porn. How wrong I am. Carry on good people.

"everything you can do in the game"... everything you can do ... -> EVERYTHING <- That it I quit.

Being a Source mapper and UDK fiddler I can safely affirm that Minecraft is the most limited, boring building sandbox I've ever played. Building is incredibly shallow and the time spent doing stuff compared to the outcome is laughable and ridiculous looking. Ignoring the shitty sandbox and considering the gameplay mechanics ("Survival", the poor combat), it's very eh.
Just install Source SDK or other Map builder and make your own world/game while sharing thoughts with people. It's incredibly fun, and time consuming, but also a lot more rewarding and mind-boggling.

Still, it filled a niche hole and the aesthetics and limited gameplay appeal to people. Add to it Notch's aggressive marketing and that's what you get. I can't blame anyone, I experienced the Minecraft effect for quite a while. But in the long run, what has made me move away from Minecraft, was that the game lacks a point - stronger weapons, bosses, equippable stuff with buffs, and the like (like Terraria for instance, and I can already people scream "TABOO & INVALID COMPARISON".)
...From what I can see these days from my experience, most people who play this day-in day-out these days are either well-versed in redstone systems, create mods/stories, or are just inspired by others who make money with their internet personas goofing about in their videos.

More like they're either incredibly short-sighted or are just autistic. Any creative mean to be reproduced in MC can be augmented about sixteen times in quality if you just use a sheet of paper, a pen, and effort. The last being something children (Minecraft's main playerbase) seem to lack nowadays.
It's just a lot easier and productive to play with Legos. The difference being that Legos are advanced enough to have more than one type of shape in their set.
I'm deeply sorry, but the $35 virtual cube stacker sim is just extremely unimpressive and overhyped to me and sadly I'll keep viewing those who hyper-appreciate and support it as an art mean as blatant ignorants.

I fully agree with you. You don't even have to be a mapper to understand that.

I actually just picked up Minecraft yesterday for the first time ever, and I'm having a blast with it. It's far more fleshed out than the building stuff I saw in the betas/alphas.
Right now I'm building myself a mine and had to wall myself in to escape from the zombies and teleporting badguys. I couldn't figure out how to make torches at all, so I was using the furnace to provide some light. I'm trying to play the game without using Wikis EXCEPT for items I already figured out how to craft...I cheated a little on the torches though :(.

I've definitely spent a good while watching Minecraft videos in the past (as I've also done with Skyrim, GMod, and virtually any other open-ended game I play). However, every time I do this it ends the exact same way: I watch the videos, think "that's not so hard," spend about an hour or so in Minecraft, realize I'm not all that creative, give up and play something else.

D'oh, you poor thing. Why not try repeating some of the very same techniques in the video? Sure it may not be original, but start with that, and once you know how to certain things, you can come up with your own inventions. You have to learn how to do something before you can try it on your own. c: That's what I would do anyway. I would try replicating things from videos I seen, like the pistons.

I spent a while fanboying over Minecraft videos. Have you ever done that? Just waste an afternoon going through dozens of videos in one sitting, in awe at all the clever innovative inventions and things people can do on Minecraft? All that ingenuis stuff that you didn't even think of trying, like the mechanics for traps. Oh, and you can't forget all those huge monolithe sculptures that look miles tall compared to your avatar; the pixel art people make of video game characters and things like monsters and dragons that look as if it took a thousand hours to build.
And yes, if you haven't noticed, I'm a fan boy for it. I'm sure all of you will be telling me that I need a fandom to express my freaky pixelated love. No, I'm not obsessive over it. I just think it's amazing at everything you can do in the game. I find beauty in the little things in life. Now flock to me, Minecraft fans. Caw. >
