You mean Omni-UltroNetGLaAUTOClu 9000?
Okay, I'll be honest, I just looked at a list of AI's that went rogue in fiction and slapped names together randomly.

Personally, I use Firefox and just install shitloads of addons. :-D
Chrome is reliable and even has lots of addons but just isn't nearly as customizable in my experience. As for Microsoft... do Idiot Explorer/Edge even really count as browsers? And I don't trust the megacorps either... (45% because I work for one, 25% privacy advocate, 20% paranoia, and 10% from playing Shadowrun Returns).
Anyway, have FF UI changes pissed me off a time or two? Sure. But haven't found anything else that gives me the same degree of customization + is open source + not tracking + not shit. FWIW, I tried the setting you mentioned an it seemed to work for me... but I'm also on Linux Mint and also haven't updated FF a few weeks (currently on 50.1.0). If you don't care about security and you're on windows, you could get the portable apps version for the last one where it worked, turn off auto-updates, and run that for awhile.

Yeah I'm a few versions behind. Each time I upgrade something else breaks. Latest ones has forced signing for addons. There's an old one I use occasionally and I do NOT need some nanny corp telling me I'm not allowed to put my own pants on in the morning.

Yeah, I think they had some issues with (or maybe were just worried about) shady addon developers. But I know what you mean. Least it's not as bad as the old days where they would annoy the shit out of you on addons not supporting the current version wherever you updated. I remember opening some *.xpi files with 7-zip and modifying the version metadata to bypass the addon version checks hehe... haven't had to muck around with that crap for a long time.
I've also screwed up my profile a time or 3 and had to export/re-import things. Slight pita but it would usually work better again afterwards.
That's the only one use so can't really recommend any alternatives. I do have a friend who likes Pale Moon but its still FF under the covers. Anyway, good luck and let us know if you find something better.
Edit: I can't say that I like them better but I do know some other choices on Linux (Konqueror / Midori) but I don't believe they have Windows versions. Since you didn't specify, I am assuming Windows based on mention of IE and since we're on site about gaming Windows is probably a safe guess.

You can do what you are looking for by using "@ loot" or "loot @".
To search only history, use "loot ^ @".
But I agree with you that the setting you are trying to use should work as well.
There are other special characters for finding other stuff as well, like "+" for finding pages you tagged and "*" for bookmarks, etc.

I gave up and I'm using Chrome despite all my reservations similar to yours - since FF was starting to look exactly the same a while ago (which I didn't like), I just switched to original from a copy-cat...

Well, there are 4-5 major browser engines:
Engine defines how browser displays webpage contents/how fast it works. If you want to stick with the Firefox renders/supports webpages but don't like the way user interface works, you can either use some extensions to fix it or switch to other Gecko based browser. For list of browsers scroll down this page and use [show] by Desktop - it covers most of browsers, gives info about them.
I myself use Opera, Firefox and VIvaldi for website browsing, first two with lots of extensions/add-ons so they work the way I like - you can use add-on to replace Firefox address/search bar). Sometimes I use IE or Edge because I either don't have a choice (I can't install new browser or webpage works only in those). For "security/privacy" I use either Tor Bundle (Firefox modification + some Tor tools) or Opera's VPN. I mean if I don't want to play with firewall :)

Why would Edge EVER be an option? I've been considering moving into Chrome more(because they already own my soul and I can't escape), but there is no reason to use Edge except the stupid search bar on the Windows OS defaults to that and I haven't figured out how to change it yet(default browser means default browser, dangit)
There's probably some super open sourcey DIY browser you can ASSUME CONTROL over(yes, just like Harbinger himself), but you also probably have to compile it and do a bunch of command line stuff. I once tried to compile a program, definitely was a massive mistake. Keep your Linux machines away from me, I might set them on fire with my presence.

Yeah that OS/browser/privacy was the main reason I stuck with 7. I'll only switch to 10 if and when I'm confident that all the privacy violations can be disabled. Could be a while, could be never. Best reason for me to start learning Linux I guess.

Most of them can be disabled... but system enables them during/after autoupdate :D
I moved to Linux after Win8. Virtual machines (VirtualBox, VMware, ...) are good for starters, then dual boot might be nice choice. It's not so bad if you can find Desktop Enviroment (Xfce? KDE? GNOME? LXDE? Enlightment? Unity? Cinnamon?) to suit your needs. Most DE doesn't require user to use terminal or compiler unless (s)he wants to... or it's advanced user :)
As for browser - best thing is to test some and find one that's best for you.I pointed some @up.

I couldn't love the browsers using Chromium engine. I switched Vivaldi for a while but it's not the same taste as Firefox (I'm using Firefox from the very beginning, i couldn't simply change it), so eventually i switched back. I love Gecko engine (especially on Linux) just like you said i've wasting so much time to make Firefox what it used to be. I don't think there are really valid options around but you can try Pale Moon, at least it looks like Firefox 3 era, and it's lightweight compared to Firefox today because they removed some features -not so important features- but it's not up-to-date at some points, still the best option i think.

Well Pale Moon was recommended already so won't bother saying much beyond that yes it is by and large Firefox without all the forced changes it has gone through the years but it is also different enough that you may feel like learning to use a new browser depending on you set things up compares to the default in it. Might have gotten better since I last tested it since it has been quite a while though.
After using it for a while myself I got too lazy to go around tweaking things to be the way I want, finding extensions and so on so I just stopped updating browser. Waited too long even it has been what like two dozen major versions, maybe more, since Firefox started to introduce more and more annoying things? Probably will need to move on at some point but for the time being it works perfectly well.

Man, it used to be so customisable, but every version removes more options and forces more irritating crap that takes me ages to "fix" back to how I like it.
At the moment I'm trying to make firefox only show URLs from history in the url bar, but it insists on searching titles as well. There's a browser.urlbar.default.behavior setting in about:config that's supposed to work but I've set it to 17 and it ignores it. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Browser.urlbar.default.behavior
What do people who've gotten sick of Firefox use? Chrome and IE/Edge aren't options ('cos both Google and Microsoft can't be trusted).
