+1 for Dead Synchronicity
But Mafia II had so bad gameplay so story line didn't matter for me

One of those crap things.
After a mission on junkyard(or garage... I don't remember) and also after mission in docks they suggest you to visit them again for some extra tasks (do you remember how many we had in Mafia 1?) So I was visiting them both almost after every mission to check. I had to drive from the end of map to another end. And what? There was not any extra mission until the VERY f***ing end
I felt so bad about this so its the only thing I remember after playing M2

the extra job was to bring them cars and they'd give you money. you could earn some money like this through whole gameplay

Sins of the Demon - a nice short RPG-Maker game with a very nice price tag for such a great bro story.

lol then the ABZU story flew over my head cause I only remember swimming around and reviving stuff (I think).

I personally haven't played a lot of games that are story-driven (or that have an interesting story really).
Hovewer, one that impressed me by its storytelling and overall plot was Oxenfree.
Though it's tough to say if what I prefered was the story in itself, or the way that it was told.

Red Dead 2 is great. But just like szabe said, "there is a difference between a good plot and storytelling".
also Call of Juarez was cool back in the days.
The walking dead was good.
But I believe To the Moon is my top 1.

fantasy games! jrpgs! =P
well, there are lots of indie games, rpgmaker games and well, the '90s text adventures.. that had awesome stories!

Have you ever played Prey ? it's like SOMA with guns and action !

Yakuza 0 is a crime drama with side quests that is done really really well. Sleeping Dogs is a playable version of Internal Affairs. Mass Effect as a trilogy felt like a satisfying story by the end to me personally. Pathologic/Pathologic 2 are p much playable Ingmar Bergman films.
uhhhhh Planescape: Torment had an excellent story but you actually have to read blocks of text to get it all so might not be as interactive as a lot of people want these days. Tales of Berseria has severe pacing issues but if you can push past those the actual story is subversive and extremely interesting.
lol i know there are others but that's all i can come up with right now.

+1 on Yakuza 0, I never got into planescape:torment, but I loved torment: tides of numenera and Fallout: New Vegas exploring all those sidestories and side quests really gotme into RPGs and it's my favorite game ever since even from story part of the game

i WAS enjoying Tides of Numeneria a little while ago-- great story! combat is enjoyable! kill children!-- but there's a quest in the first half of the game that is terribly bugged and makes it unable to complete turn in as completed. i had no idea it was borked so all my saves (i generally keep three) were all past the point where i could have salvaged it, so i ragequit. totally plan on starting over again and being super careful with that particular quest in the future but it's gonna be a few years.

They should re-release them with some lame excuse so more people can be exposed to these gems

Batman Trilogy and Assassin's Creed til Ezio dies.

Dust: An Elysian Tail is one of my absolute favourites, not only because it's a metroidvania, but because the story was incredibly well-written for an indie game.

Well, I can agree that far to many indies have a tendency to go either with a cryptic story-telling from the beginning or at least go for the open ending. Also, Dust for the most part had a good story but the ending to me felt very weak. And after reading in the forum, I think it has been confirmed by the developer, I found out that the game originally had planned an additional act which had to be cut out. It is still a remarkable project for a single person, but it makes one wonder.

I felt that the ending was left open for a possible sequel, so I assumed that was deliberate. I guess I was only half right. =)
But yes, when I found out that the whole thing was developed mostly by one person, I was even more impressed with it.

The ones that hold a special place in my heart:
Mass Effect series
The Last of Us (it seems like a typical average game at first, but you always have a good memories after completing it)
Horizon Zero Dawn (one of the few games, where I've actually listened to all audio collectibles, read everything, just to know more about the world)
Also:
Nier: Automata (will leave you feeling empty after seeing all endings).
Life is Strange
Witcher 3
A Plague Tale: Innocence (underrated game)

Not really. A and B are canon but they are not final and story continues after them leading to C or D.
C and D endings exclude each other (only one can be true).
Pretty sure E ending is not canon for the next NieR game (just like E ending from NieR:Replicant/Gestalt) since it doesn't fit the logic and mood of storyline.
PS: I think C is gonna be true ending in Automata.
D is too cruel and irrevocable, C is not happy either but at least gives small chance 9S and A2 to return for the next NieR game.
Both are broken (9S mentally, A2 physically) but can survive. Sadly 2B is 100% dead anyway due logic virus destroying her mind and A2 killing her out of mercy.

Having just finished Horizon Zero Dawn a week ago, seconded.
Am I dead inside that Nier Automata made me feel nothing? I forced myself to finish it and was underwhelmed.

I only watched Horizon Zero Dawn, but that game is extremely high on my list!

For me these games highlight the story vs storytelling issue.
I'd say Nier Autonata is the typical example of a great and deep story told badly with overly long sections where nothing really happens. A Plague Tale: Innocence would be the opposite, an average story told really well.
This is just my take on it though.
