What music do you listen to regularly?

I totally forgot the self titled album, thanks man!

Only Metallica album I would put in Thrash would probably be Kill 'Em All, maybe ...And Justice For All. The rest is pretty heavy in my opinion.

Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, and Anthrax were considered the top 4 thrash metal bands at one point. Pantera has never ever been considered Grunge. Their best album in my opinion is Vulgar and that's definitely not grunge.
Comment has been collapsed.
I don't know myself but it feels grunge-y to me, in a way. I think Metallica is Heavy Metal and it isn't that thrashy for some reason, at least the other albums other than the ones I listed before. They sound a lot more Neo-classical to me. I think Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax are the golden trio. I absolutely love all of them but defining them gets complicated. Pantera is great workout music as well, gets the pump going. I also just noticed I forgot Slipknot Iowa. I literally just got the CD too and I can't believe I already forgot.
Comment has been collapsed.
When I was growing up listening to rock and metal there wasn't anywhere near the level of subgenres there are now. Very early Metallica a lot of people did considered thrash. I didn't start listening to Metallica till Justice, so I just considered them Heavy Metal. I thought Metallica's music was better before the Black Album, but I do like the Black Album as well.
Comment has been collapsed.
I started listening just after hearing Justice too! I heard One once and I was hooked, I watched the movie the song was based off and everything, blew my mind. I like the Black album a lot too, my personal favorite is still Justice.
Comment has been collapsed.
Johnny Got His Gun! Yeah, that's a messed up movie. I watched it as well.
Comment has been collapsed.
Well at least he got his gun. Death was respectful at least.

I love Kill Em All, Puppets and Justice, but Lightning is my favorite.
Comment has been collapsed.
Never been a fan of it that much, it's great but wouldn't value it as high as Justice, since it has sentimental value. Also debating on getting the CD of that too, but South of Heaven is really appealing too, since I learned the South of Heaven riff a long time ago.

Bands can change throughout and they can have different types of music over time, and often at times just a single song in an album that's a little different from the rest. Some for the better some for the worse, depends who you ask really. I love Neo-classical heavy metal a lot too, especially Rainbow because those were Ronnies' golden times. I would do anything to see him live with my own eyes, he was absolutely magnificent person with an even better voice.
Comment has been collapsed.
Pearl Jam, completely forgot. Not a fan of Nirvana or Soundgarden, will give Stone Temple Pilots a shot. I've also listened to the Dream Theater albums but I don't deem them 'favorite' worthy, but they are extremely good. I love how you pointed out that Pantera isn't grunge for the second time without any words spoken. You really want me to put it into thrash huh?
Comment has been collapsed.
Music has no boundaries and I don't even know half of the time what is what anymore, hard rock is metal, heavy metal is thrash metal, that again is just faster heavy metal and then there is alternative metal and all those glam metals and stuff and it's so overcomplicated.
Comment has been collapsed.
Besides STP these are some other grunge bands worth checking out. The Smashing Pumpkins, Bush, Candlebox, Temple of the Dog, Silverchair, Foo Fighters, Our Lady Peace, Radiohead, Hole, Toadies, REM, Screaming Trees, The Presidents of the United States.
Early Pearl Jam I'm a huge fan of. Ten is one of my favorite albums from any artist.. I've listened to it hundreds to possibly thousands of times. Nirvana and Soundgarden are good, but you've mentioned you're not a fan.
Comment has been collapsed.
I learned the Even Flow riff quite recently, a fun one to learn because it took so long for me to get right with the metronome.
Comment has been collapsed.
That's cool, Even Flow is a great song. It's been awhile since I listened to Ten, and with all this Pearl Jam talk I'm going to do that now. :)

Hey, thanks for sharing! Awesome post. I guess I'll just mention my favorites among the ones that you listed.
Classical: Autumn, Nocturne, Moonlight Sonata
Psychedelic: Dark Side of the Moon, The Wall, Are You Experienced, Led Zeppelin IV
Progressive Rock: Rush
Hard Rock: Appetite for Destruction, Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap, Back in Black, Machine Head
Neo-Classical Heavy Metal: Paranoid, Heaven & Hell
Heavy: The Pick of Destiny, Tenacious D, ...And Justice For All, Black Album, Holy Diver
Grunge: Facelift, Vulgar Display of Power (Although... 1. I doubt Pantera is Grunge, and 2. Small typo there. Vulgular*)
Nu Metal: SOAD, Toxicity, Steal This Album!, Mezmerize
Thrash: Peace Sells... but Who's Buying?, Korn (Although... I'd say Korn is Nu Metal)
Like I said, I only listed my favorites, but I've heard and I like many of the ones that you listed. Except Progressive Metal lol. I haven't heard anything that was on the list. Perhaps I heard a Buckethead song in some Guitar Hero game, but maybe I'm misremembering.
I'd personally add Queen of the Night (Mozart), Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 (Liszt), Beatles, Cream, Queen, Janis Joplin, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Slipknot, Prince & The Revolution, Bon Jovi, Radiohead, Genesis, Chilli Peppers, Jeff Buckley, Linkin Park, Sugarcubes, The Police, and The Clash. Maybe some Gorillaz and Smiths can fit in there as well.
About your opinion about modern music. I guess I mostly agree, lots of modern music is just soulless, catchy cash grabs, remixes and same repetitive crap. The only current artists that I can listen to sometimes are Bruno Mars, Ed Sheeran, Rihanna, The Black Keys, and maybe Kendrick Lamar or something.
Finally, I'd like to make a shoutout to Silk Sonic's album (Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak), I think is pretty enjoyable, and also the song BLOW by Ed Sheeran, Bruno Mars and Chris Stapleton. It's a tiny bit generic, but a Rock song sung by a Pop artist, a R&B singer and a Country musician, turned out to be pretty fun.
Thanks for the fun post.

Anything that is Nu Metal I squeeze under the rug somewhere because I want to leave SOAD untouched and protected. Although I'd say System Of A Down is more like Progressive Metal over the years. I FORGOT SERJ TANKIANS' SOLO CAREER. I keep remembering and remembering. I also forgot to add some Queen, I also like The Police, it's a classic but not what I would deem 'favorite' worthy. I'm glad you enjoy my favorites, I like yours too, especially Franz Liszt.

I just noticed too, that does make it look like Korn wrote Peace Sells, they listed it by album so they meant the self titled album. That's funny as hell

You should make a Youtube Playlist with all these. Utsu-P is my guilty pleasure.
Comment has been collapsed.
I don't want to deal with delisted videos and having to always check if they are up to date and whatever. I'd rather have a moderator delete this discussion so I don't have to worry about it anymore than create a Youtube playlist. If you want me to recommend something from my recommendation list I can, otherwise you are out of luck and have to listen to everything, shame 😂

I'm mostly into melodic death (In Flames, Arch Enemy etc), british heavy metal (Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and so on) and weird stuff. I don't really like most of the american bands :x
My favorite band is probably Amorphis? They started as a death band but slowly shifted into... something else that's kinda unique. Here are a few tracks I often listen to: To Father's Cabin - Crimson Wave - House of Sleep - Mermaid which are all pretty different from each other.
Comment has been collapsed.
Wow, Amorphis sounds cool, never heard them before, thanks for the recommendation!

They were already a well known band in the 90s internationally (I mean at least within the metal scene), Tales from the Thousand Lakes is considered a classic by many. I really like it as well though admittedly didn't keep up with their later work. (Listened to Elegy I think, but nothing beyond that.)
Comment has been collapsed.
Rivers of Nihil - Hellbirds is my current favorite, and the video makes me laugh every single time I watch it. We all know a dude like that.
And I've been enjoying Exhorder's return to Slaughter in the Vatican style of playing even though Mourn the Southern Skies is one of my all time faves.
Comment has been collapsed.
No Korn, Disturbed, Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park or Otep in nu metal section? That's a waste. Yeah, I love SoaD, one of my all-time favourites and probably the best nu-metal band (mostly because they focused on their strengths, avoiding questionable experiments), but still. Don't you like Scars on Broadway, by the way? I absolutely love the first album, it's on par with the SoaD. In the second one Daron decided to write all music, and it was a mistake if you ask me, the sound was a little bit flat. The departure of John Dolmayan probably also played a role.
Scars On Broadway - Whoring Streets
Scars On Broadway - World Long Gone
Scars On Broadway - They Say
Scars On Broadway - 3005
Scars On Broadway - Serious
Scars On Broadway - Guns Are Loaded
Also, check Manapart if you haven't — that's a young band from St. Petersburg, which sounds almost like System of a Down in their golden days, but is not afraid to experiment and bring something new to the table. And their collaboration with Tardigrade Inferno reminded me of obscure Dog Fashion Disco - love it! Overall Manapart, Under Delusion and Shirra are my main discoveries of the Russian music scene of the last five (probably even ten) years.
Manapart - Reflection of Reality
Manapart - Monk Dance
Manapart - Void Manifesto
Manapart - Indoctrination
Manapart - Tomorrow
Manapart - Misery (feat. Tardigrade Inferno)
Comment has been collapsed.
You can find their 'questionable' experiments in their demo tapes and some unreleased demos on Youtube and elsewhere, also yes, I have Korn but not in Nu Metal because I want to leave everything else out of Nu Metal except Soad. I like Scars On Broadway but I just don't like how he strays away from Nu Metal a bit and goes into this more thrashy type of singing, doesn't really fit in my opinion.
Did you know that the song Enemy from SOB used the chorus from this live demo with System?
The vocalist of Manapart sounds like if Serj Tankian wasn't Armenian, I like it. Nice and mellow.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah, they experimented a bit in the demos, but the final albums were were stylistically consistent in their unique style.
Yeah, I knew)
That's funny, because he is an Armenian as well as 3 out of 4 members of the group) (the last one is Russian)
Comment has been collapsed.
They tried a lot, the first demo tape was like really sludgy as well. It went better as it went on and that's how the self titled album became to be. I love some of the exclusives too like Johnny or Marmalade. All and all greats works by them, and they stopped at the right time and didn't start making slop like all these other bands like AC/DC now with their signed music contracts. They really are the most unique voice in music, I believe that.

Throwing some recommendations here too then!
Architects - Dead Butterflies (wish I could hear it for the first time again. also, not a single bad song)
Crystal Lake - Lost In Forever (vocalist left and now it doesn't feel the same)
Polaris - Hypermania
LANDMVRKS - Lost In A Wave
Other bands: Loathe, Phineas, Fit for a King, Wage War, Currents.
Breakdown of Sanity - The Writer (they came back! Cried hearing Coexistence album, a pure masterpiece)
Slaughter to Prevail - VIKING (most powerful voice i've heard)
Lorna Shore - To The Hellfire (most versatile voice i've ever heard)
Paleface Swiss - Please End Me
Other bands: Brand of Sacrifice, Alpha Wolf, Darko US, Within Destruction, ten56.
BABYMETAL - Road of Resistance (Kawaii Metal)
Holding Absence - Afterlife (Post-hardcore / rock)
Rise of the Northstar - Nekketsu (metal hardcore-punk)
Comment has been collapsed.
Lorna Shore is cool but I don't listen to it often. I didn't really like any of these to be honest, I'm old school if you can say that. Nothing personal just personal preference :)

I used to listen what you have listed in your list, but somehow I stopped listening them. Now I mostly listen core, idk why, maybe the energy from the concerts... Check out the metalcore bands from the list and also these: Caskets, Future Palace, Jinjer, Spiritbox, Foxblood.
Comment has been collapsed.
Oh hey there, not big fan of deathcore and metalcore, I personally like this older stuff. Although I'd definitely take deathcore any day over pop music, anything but that. I've heard of Spiritbox and it is sick. Some of these other suggestions have been surprising as well, I like what people are listening to these days like Soundgarden but I don't listen to that often. I also wanted to ask, since you are already here, would you care to look through my heavy metal song application? Glad to still see you aren't deceased, was worried for a while.

YES! I need some Tool on my list, I absolutely forgot...

Dedication if you decide to listen to it all, I mostly included all my favorite albums, but not the ones I also like too, since I don't feel like they would be 'favorite' worthy. Also my father listening to Guns N Roses just reminded me to add Aerosmith - Toys In The Attic.

Better, but still not something I'd listen to on the regular.

why? Babymetal was support band on Sabaton concert here in Ostrava, Czech Republic :)

Well yes, but it's a vast difference. I just can't take this kawaii metal seriously with something as serious as Sabaton.

I listen to a disgusting amount of muzak (I try to aim for at least 100 new records per year), and lots of stuff on your list would go on mine, too (and of the stuff that wouldn't, it's 95% albums I still enjoy). System of a Down's not my all-time favorite, but they -were- my first favorite band, and definitely served as a heck of a gateway to becoming an 'active' fan of music.
I usually gravitate to proggy or extremely ear-unfriendly heavy music these days, but I'll add some of my off-hand all-time/current favorites to a few of the categories listed:
Prog Rock
Yes - Close to the Edge
Genesis - Selling England by the Pound (I'm weirdly apathetic to Genesis in general, but this one pushes all the right buttons)
Marillion - Script for a Jester's Tears ("neoprog", if you will, but I love their first four records -- basically an increasingly more accessible prog-era Genesis-like)
Spock's Beard - The Light
Tool - Lateralus (I've always referred to Tool as a rock band, but you're welcome to classify it as a prog metal record--either way, one of my favorite heavy prog experiences)
Transatlantic -SMPTe
Hard Rock
Thin Lizzy - Jailbreak
Van Halen - Van Halen I
Prog Metal (dang, you already got all the good Dream Theater albums (+ Octavarium :v))
Ayreon - The Human Equation (a 2-CD concept album featuring like a dozen singers from various prog and metal bands each playing a different character, including Devin Townsend, Labrie from Dream Theater, Åkerfeldt from Opeth, etc.)
Haken - Aquarius
Opeth - Ghost Reveries
Queensryche - Operation: Mindcrime
Shadow Gallery - Digital Ghosts
Heavy Metal
Anthem - Nucleus
Crimson Glory - Transcendence
Satan - Life Sentence
Type O Negative - Life Is Killing Me (usually not a consensus top 3 Type O pick, but it's just so easy to jump into that it's become my go-to of theirs)
X-Japan - Blue Blood
Thrash Metal
probably one of my least listened-to metal subgenres, but I'll subtract your Korn, who has never made a thrash album, and instead offer a...
Annihilator - Alice in Hell
Comment has been collapsed.
Oh my god, I forgot that Genesis existed, as well as Annihilator. Putting them on the list asap.

You may not remember that Muzak (pronounced Myoo'-zack) was a company trademark for the folks who used to make the crap orchestral cover versions of pop songs that would play in business buildings, inspiring the term "elevator music." I hope for your sake that you don't listen to any amount of that, though admittedly, any amount would be disgusting as you say.
Comment has been collapsed.
Haha, I did know it as--more or less--a synonym of "elevator music," but I actually didn't know it was a company-specific term or that the tunes had to be covers of pop songs. I probably -would- listen to a bit of that as a means of mental time traveling every now and again, but I haven't quite gotten into an "actual muzak" phase yet.

Not a big fan of Rock / Metal, but here some ones that i pretty like :
Machinae Supremacy - Republic Of Gamers
ORDEN OGAN - Gunman

I don't really like the over the top techno in the background but otherwise pretty alright.

What? No black/death metal choice in the poll? Or power metal? Remember, heavy metal has several different sub-genres so it can get a LITTLE confusing when saying heavy metal when you could mean power metal, death metal ETC.
Comment has been collapsed.
Power metal is basically heavy metal which is basically metal. Everything leads down to the 2 founding fathers; rock and metal. Which also comes from soul, jazz and blues. It's like Ying and Yang, they go together like Bacon and Eggs.
Comment has been collapsed.
Ok, then how would you define Goathwore (who I have seen live twice), King Diamond, Lamb of God, The Haunted or Cannibal Corpse?
Comment has been collapsed.
Have you ever listened to any of them? They are MUCH harder than pop rock.
Goatwhore example
Lamb of God example
Cannibal Corpse example

I've listened to them a few times some time ago, I like the riffs and playing but not that big of a fan of screaming and groaning, I like clean vocals a lot more.

Lovely thread! I am also "guilty" of listening to a sick amount of music, it's part of most of my day, I go to sleep with music every single night. I've been building up a library for the past 20+ years, for myself. I don't share usually and I don't like "forcing" my tastes on others as of course with everything, taste in music is subjective. I also just listen to all kinds of genres - I feel like it's unnecessary to limit ourselves with this, because you can find greatness everywhere.
I'll stick to rock/metal stuff here though (mostly, I guess, probably), checking through artist that begin with # or letter A. I may come back to post more xD.

I was also going to say that if you have an obsession with the alphabet because you only like the letter A, but I'll pick a few more interesting sounding ones from here I haven't heard before and take a listen. Greatly appreciate some new music to enlighten my ears with, however I am not easily impressed.
Additional: If this is the start, I want more. Not everything is something I'd call favorite worthy but these are some amazing picks.

Of course some might appeal to you and some not (for me it also greatly depends on the mood) and that is fine! If you manage to find even a handful of gems from this bunch then I'm already satisfied that I shared :).
And yes, it might have seemed like there's an obsession with A indeed :D, but it was just too much to put the rest of the alphabet here for now (for perspective, there's roughly 2000 artists I will need to check eventually).

Korn - trash metal?!
"The band is notable for pioneering the nu metal genre and bringing it into the mainstream".

I cannot say I have a favourite genre but I like rock / metal a lot.
Avant-garde Metal
Diablo Swing Orchestra - Stratosphere Serenade
Gothic Metal
Tristania - Beyond the Veil
Sirenia - Lithium and a Lover
Symphonic Metal
Within Temptation - Hand of Sorrow
Epica - Quietus
Folk Metal
Eluveitie - Epona
Arkona - Odna
Ensiferum - Into Battle
Power Metal
Almora - Shehrazad
Bonus Anatolian Rock
Cem Karaca Raptiye Rap Rap
Barış Manço - Domates Biber Patlıcan

No problem! I like Within Temptation a lot but I don't like their last albums, almost no metal there.

We're like-minded there, I cannot listen something like Cannibal Corpse. I'm kinda slow when discovering new music but will definitely check your list, at least the ones I don't know. I mostly like Gothic / Folk from metal genre but most of them are pretty heavy stuff for me.

I love music, it helps me get through the hard times and the good times. I do not like listening to modern music -- at all. Techno, EDM, pop, you name it. I hate it all. I can't bear none of it, in my opinion it's all just electronical noise, you could say the same thing about electric guitars and whatnot but at least that sounds good. I love rock, metal and classical music, the fact that I only exclusively like this kind of music doesn't mean I don't like listening to game soundtracks, they hit different. I like listening to the Doom soundtrack a lot while playing Doom and I also love the Dusk soundtrack, Terraria soundtrack is pretty good too and there are some others I like. I don't know how to explain this but a game soundtrack gives a game personality, which makes the game fun to play when it has some fitting music. That might actually be the entire reason why I started playing Undertale, I kind of loved how the game fit with the feel of the game. Space Invaders wouldn't be the same without the 8-bit music and Mario Kart Wii wouldn't be the same without the catchy music.
ANYWAY, enough about games. Here is my full list of recommendations from all my favorite bands, from softest to hardest, non-particular order and non-alphabetically, just whatever comes to mind I'll write down. Artist first, album second. Sometimes there are self-titled albums so just making this clear so there isn't any confusion.
Classical Music
In my opinion basically all classical music is amazing so I think I'll list everything by author, and add notes as to which song is best in my opinion, musicians didn't really release albums back then so I guess this is an exception
Blues Rock
Normal format from now on, artist first, album second
Honorable mention
Psychedelic Rock
Progressive Rock
Hard Rock
I want to say that I love AC/DC, the first rock album I ever listened to was AC/DC Let There Be Rock. I have been in love with music ever since.
Neo-Classical Heavy Metal
Basically old heavy metal, sweet stuff
Progressive Metal
The fine line between just good enough to headbanging good
Anything over this line will get HEAVIER and more aggressive, which also means more profanity
Heavy Metal
Grunge
Nu Metal
SOAD is my all time favorite band, hence why they get an almost entire section to themselves
Thrash Metal ◉_◉
I have probably listened to all of these albums at least 10 times each, and probably even more to the ones I love most. This was more a list of albums I like to listen to, I probably didn't get them all since these came all off the top of my head. I will add more if I find new good ones or if I forgot one. I probably have undiagnosed OCD and I like my stuff nice and organized, so this is a nice way to keep track of all the good music I have in my life. If you have something I might like, send them here, I will listen. Happy listening.
