What is the main reason for you to play video games?
Currently I think I mostly play games to avoid reality, or just to pass the time, really. I'm disabled and a bit depressed. I still have fun, though, and I do like to gain achievements and improve my statistics. I'd like to get my Avg. Game Completion Rate up higher.

Gaming let me communicate with other people, have fun with friends, have fun fron gameplay, have awesome feelings from landscapes and levels, expand my knowledge of the world, improve my skills (English, reaction, analytic skills) aaand...
... it helped me to forget myself, let me calm dawn and let me feel alone from all World's shit at bad period of my life.

as a kid it was all extremely different, you know, gathering with friends playing nes and snes games all over again all the times from the beginning.. =P we evolved through jrpgs played together and then I am still having lots of fun after 20 years of gaming (maybe more, I'm getting quite old =P) with the tons of different genres Steam offers =) And kongregate of course has contributed a lot =P yeah I definitely love playing any kind of game! =)

I mostly play games to have fun but sometimes I also like to challenge myself. Achievements never really mattered that much to me and I do not like the social aspects of gaming, apart from playing locally with friends (which I rarely have the opportunity to do nowadays).
I've been playing for almost 40 years, starting with a couple of Tiger (like) handhelds my uncle had when I was 4 or 5. Sometimes gaming was my main hobby, other times months or years went by without playing.
Nowadays, with a family and two daughters, I still love playing but I can't commit a lot of time to it :)

I play games because they distract me from the constant onslaught of thoughts on how pointless and hopeless life is, how awful the world we live in is and how everyone around me (myself included) would be much better off if I were dead.
Oh, and also because of addiction, fun, challenge, achievement hunting and whatnot. It's primarily the distraction thing nowadays.

Basically, I'm sad, lonely and live in a country that's chosen Middle Ages as its ideal, so yeah, it's mostly a form of escapism for me.

Yeah i do enjoy games and it's the most important thing when i play a game. But occasinoally if it's easy enough or i am really liking the game i go for full achievements. Fuck you Sekiro i farmed 4+ hours for your last achievement and fuck me i couldn't let it go...

Es macht Spass != It makes fun. Try 'It is fun' next time.

Mainly for fun and for the story, but it's a combination of things. It also feels rewarding beating levels, specially if it requires certain skills.

For fun!
I used games as an escape from the reality before but that time is thankfully over (more or less, thanks for nothing covid).
Also, for achievements. I lately found out to be pretty devoted completionist. Couple of years ago I couldn't care less about achievements, right now I'm playing games that I wouldn't otherwise play but I want these chevossss ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ But that also count as fun.

Mainly as an attempt at socializing - I guess that's not a very popular reason since it's not even in the poll, so I guess 'Other'... and possibly also a secondary reason as a means of validation (as you also mentioned, a sense of "worth").
As you also mentioned, it has also changed over time - 10 years ago I'd purely play for fun, because I could afford to.
Now, fun would probably be a close second, but I find that without other people, it quickly degrades into 'avoiding reality'/addiction/'don't know what I should rather do'-territory.

My enjoyment is mixed...
I wish I had more time to play, and watch shows and movies, and had multiple screens again so I could do more of both at once while researching some other thing and keeping up with social media. These days, though, I rarely get to do any of the above, but definitely do still game, and watch shows.
Often, my gaming these days is on mobile. Usually Skullgirls, otherwise often some random idle game. If I'm at home, I can play on wifi, so I can play my pc games on the phone through Stadia or Shadow while streaming a show on my actual pc.
The problem with having limited time is that you feel guilty about using that time for enjoyable gaming, so that affects the enjoyment. When I can properly lose myself in a game for hours though, it's definitely enjoyable. It's not really seeking an escape from reality, just seeking to experience something different, exciting, engrossing, and... fun. Not unlike a good book -- something else I struggle to find the time for, when I used to read constantly!
I enjoy gaming. I wish I had the time to enjoy it more.

as there starts a new challenge, i wonder if you still play, cause you enjoy gaming or cause its a challenge or cause there are achievements to gather or which reason you have to play. so why do you play video games and has it changed in the past?
for me it has changed quite a few times: as kid i played cause of fun, then as teenager i flew from problems in reality so i played all day long. then there came a time of browsergames, where i just played to proof my self to be something "worth" while i spent all my time only on computer - ironic, right?^^
with steam i also started to play just to get achievements, i even played if i disliked the game so it was more like work but i paid for it to do it and got no real reward^^ inbetween i finaly start to ignore more and more the achievements (but sometimes i still try to get some of them, but if i dont get them, i dont care much) and start to play them more again cause i love gaming.
but i would like to hear your stories <3
