Is there any way to find out who has blacklisted me and counter blacklist them fast? Not that I create giveaways here anyways atm, but still.

The only way is to try to enter the giveaways of other people until you find "You can't enter this giveaway because the creator blacklisted you" or something like that.
Also why counter blacklist someone if you don't do giveaways?

Just in general. Maybe (just maybe) I'll start a giveaway spree in the future to fix my CV, wouldn't want those people joining imo.

You'd still have to go to the profile of everyone on your whitelist and check it manually. Depending on your whitelist,
that's up to 1000 profiles. In my case, it's still almost 200. I wouldn't call that "easy".

I'm fairly sure you're missing the point completely. He isn't asking how to get de-blacklisted, he's asking how to blanket blacklist everyone who's done it to him.

Finally, another leech who understands your desire to make a pointless, utterly petty gesture in response to legitimately getting blacklisted?

Here's a question for the pair of you: why do you have any desire to build up a blacklist of people who cannot enter the barren wasteland that is your list of giveaways? What exactly is the point? Why on earth would anybody care?

It just makes it seem that besides being a leech, you're also vindictive. And delusional, I suppose, if you think a BL from you means anything whatsoever.

So what you want is essentially an automatic system thing where when someone blacklists you, the system automatically blacklists them?

It is a recurring idea actually: https://www.steamgifts.com/discussion/yjyJ0/suggestion-make-blacklists-bi-directional

And if someone unblacklists you, you auto-unblacklist them as well?

That would not work well, as you could unblacklist someone, enter their GA-s, and reblacklist. And it would have to track the difference between user-initiated and implied/reflexive blacklists (so you blacklisting and unblacklisting someone would not automatically remove you from their blacklist, if they put you there manually). So at the end it (the unblacklisting part) would be complicated to implement and prone to abuse at the same time.

Have to, no. Disliking them has nothing to do with it.
But I don't subscribe to the idea that someone blocking you but still entering and winning your giveaway is a nice thing.
In my opinion you shouldn't be able to join the giveaways of people you've blacklisted, it seems only fair.

If you don't mind, that's fine for you, I'd just rather not reward someone who randomly blacklisted me.

i did that too, one time. i don't know why he blacklisted me. and i didn't really care. he won the giveaway fair and square. and maybe the reason for the blacklist was not even some argument gone wrong, or whatever. maybe he blacklisted me because i already won a game from him, and he always does that? could be. in that case i would be alright with the blacklist, and it even would have been unfair of me to blacklist him and not give him the game, right?

i recently had an argument with someone here. well, from my point of view it was a discussion. from his it was an argument. he got angry and blacklisted me twice during the discussion. instead of revenge-blacklisting, i told him i won't blacklist him, even if it's tempting. i think that was the right choice, since he removed me from his blacklist (twice). i even whitelisted him for his good ratio. ^^

maybe we all should learn to not be that angry all the time. instead let's try to be nice, even if the other guy is not that nice. sometimes the end result is better for both us and the other guy. ;)

Black humour: "The term black humor (from the French humour noir) was coined by the surrealist theorist André Breton in 1935[7][8] to label a subgenre of comedy and satire[9][10] in which laughter arises from cynicism and skepticism,[7][11] often relying on topics such as death.[12][13]"

Krajing

We need to reference users by name for this kind of thing more often, so they can't just erase all evidence of their horrid behavior with a few quick "oops, well, I guess not everyone here is as hateful as I am" comment deletions.

Which isn't to encourage any sort of continued retribution against that user (especially when the user's comment's are no longer able to be evaluated directly)- just stating that anonymity and ease-of-take-backs only encourages such behaviors and not having to take any responsibility for them, which only encourages the user to continue engaging in the behavior [as previous, even nastier users have done in the past].

Have you ever heard of the right to be forgotten? The fact that this guy, whoever he was, understood his mistake, or at least understood that majority of people don't agree with him, is enough for me to say that he's a decent person. No need to punish him over it.

But this is not real-life communication. I'd rather use analogy that the user set up a trap that hurts everybody who steps on it while walking - he just removed that trap to not hurt people, saving them from pain. You can't suddenly act like nothing happened, of course, but his decision on deleting the comment was a good one, not only for himself, but for all the people like me, who didn't have a chance to read it (and good for us).

Well, the point isn't for something as empty as punishment. It's that someone coming in, attacking everyone and making light of their concerns and insisting on their right to be a jerk, and then only removing their comments out of fear of official punishment (rather than actually addressing the topic or their behavior) is an unfortunate occurrence that happens all too regularly.

Letting that slide without any remembrance in the conversation itself only encourages further negative behavior, by allowing the users to pretend they don't have to accept any responsibility for their actions at all.
It's a big difference between allowing someone the right to freely antagonize users, to allowing them hide an embarrassing personal mistake or situation [And of course is a matter which has no bearing whatsoever in The Right to be Forgotten, which doesn't apply to conversational interaction or matters which others have a say in the visibility of, but to publicly available personal data which meets the requirement of being related to "past events in the individual's life that are no longer occurring". It's meant to avoid continued negative outlooks for things like having had to endure being subjected to revenge porn or bankruptcy. In essence, it basically follows the exact same spirit I just outlined.]

And, besides. If leaving someone's name out is 'punishment', then that's a problematic reflection of that user in the first place. I assume people have the sense to make judgments on their own, and decide how they ought respond to things. Oh, perhaps that's overly optimistic, but I'm not going to go out of my way to insult anyone by assuming otherwise to start with.

As you say, communication- and the respect for others integral to allowing it to succeed- is key. When someone comes in, acts threatening, and spits in your face, the correct answer is to address the situation in a forthright and respectful manner, not to insist that it never happened at all.

Again, not promoting anything related to blacklisting or to dedicating further concern over such matters once they've passed. Just stating that allowing users to expect that their misbehaviors not be given any real consideration, is a bad framework to hold to.

The problem is that deathwishes and death threats are universally prohibited on online mediums. There isn't a game or forum or chat room I've come across, with any sort of moderation to them, that allows for it. It, along with bigotry, are things everyone fundamentally understands as crossing a line that basic harassment, cursing, trolling, spamming, etc does not.

And "Go kill yourself" wasn't even an attempt at a jest- that phrasing is too blunt, too vindictive. Add in how the commenter approached his followthrough, and it came across more as an 'oops, I guess I misbehaved, let me pass it off as a joke' than anything with any remote sense of sincerity.

Nevermind that by definition, it wasn't a joke to begin with.

A joke is a display of humour in which words are used within a specific and well-defined narrative structure with the intent to make other people laugh.

Putting aside formal nuances, let's get to the integral part: That comment wasn't made to amuse anyone other than the commenter. And that doesn't fly for deathwishes anymore than "All them damn [minority slur]s are [subhuman reference] that ought [vile declaration]" does- if it's clearly understood to be inappropriate, there's just no excusing it.

Now this is black humour. A little blacker maybe than I'd like to because I know some people here and I would rather not enter to give them better chances than wish any bad for them for my own better chances, but that just me.
On the other hand, kill yourself is not humorous at all. Maybe you imagined something to it like "then they surely won't win anything from you as well, served!", but without it it really looks like the toxic, miserable asshat from any youtube comments who has nothing better to do than ruin someone's mood.
While personality and uniqueness is a really important for everyone, sometimes it worth a few seconds to look at yourself from an observer's perspective. If it's easy to mix you up with the filth of communities based on your comment (and that wasn't your intention) then it's worth changing on it, at least a little.

you don't really wanna know who or why you were blacklisted (though the why is the ratio for most)... it is even worse then having anonymous blacklisters. the ones i don't know about don't bother me in the least bit, but the few i do know about kinda annoy me a lil more then the rest.

It's not about that, I don't like blacklisting because It's a form of censoring imo, people aren't as outspoken as they used to be, because they get blacklisted, ofcourse I don't really mind it, this thread has gotten me 25 blacklist so far, I'm certain a lot of people feel the same was as me, but they're scared of asking because they get alot of blacklists.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

How is blacklisting a form of censoring? No one is telling you what or what not to say, merely that they disagree with you enough to not want to give you free stuff. It may be a form of conditioning, whereby blacklisting or the fear of getting blacklisted acts as negative feedback and thus discourages certain behaviour, but it isn't censoring.

Either you say what you want and not give a fuck about randoms on the internet, or you care more about getting free shit than your own personal convictions. Pick one.

That's a poor way of framing it. Refusing to post your opinion on these forum has nothing to do with your personal convictions. You're pretty much guaranteed to not change anyone's mind on any topic either way, so if there's a choice between more GAs and less GAs and nothing gained or lost either way, the obvious correct choice is more GAs. And on a user by user level, it makes perfect sense. However, when applied across all with minority opinions, it ends up forming an echo chamber, a form of community self-censorship.

Really, when I think about it, I'm on this site for the giveaways. The community is a bonus. When I have to choose between one or the other, it's an easy choice. And so I've mostly stayed out of the forum since blacklisting people for their opinions became a thing. It's not worth participating if I get mass-blacklisted every time I speak my mind.

Permalink

You're pretty much guaranteed to not change anyone's mind

And that is where we differ. I truly believe that so long as you have an honest and clear debate, than mind can and do change. We are not creatures made of stone but hI'm an beings. We change our minds, prefernces and beliefs all the time. To think otherwise is to be cynical.

I do understand how you feel though. From personal experience, I have thought certain peeps would never change, but they have and proved me wrong. No matter how small, there is still a chance :D.

And that is where you and I differ my good man! I see this thread... immediately black list the creator because he is basically asking me to. Read a few laugh out loud blurbs and move on. You on the other hand try to help! That is an ultimate fail, and then ^^ guy up there states it best you try to use logic! hahahaah penultimate fail. Do you know where you are? This is the internet!
side note thanks for keeping the place fun and trying to help people even though many are beyond help.

You're wrong. Blacklisting is a way of disagreeing, usually in the pittiest way. How sad someone has to be to say " I don't agree with you, so no games for you" - first of all, you have so slight chance of winning a giveaway, that removing a few basically doesn't effect your chance of winning, even more if not all giveaways are for something you want. Secondly, for your information, most of the time blacklisters are literally just haters, they don't even give games, just blacklist your because F you. (Not that I create giveaways here anyways atm, - familiar?)
And for third, and most importantly about censoring: you're free to say anything further, your comments and ideas, opinions are not hidden at all. Freedom of speech is not being free from consequences, be it reasonable or not. Plus they are not forcing you stay silent.
The have the right to blacklist me for not having a capital A in my letter, or you for your opinion. And you also have the right to not give a single fuck about blacklisting, and just try to be as good and yourself as you can be, taking the consequences. If you really mean something and would stand up for it, and someone blacklists you for it, deal with it. Your thought opinion always should worth more than a random person't opinion about your opinion.
Get whitelists, and whitelist people to make them happy, and forget about blacklist, seriously. I think it was one of the biggest mistake the site did that they added a counter for it.

Blacklisting is a way of disagreeing, usually in the pittiest way. How sad someone has to be to say " I don't agree with you, so no games for you" [..] most of the time blacklisters are literally just haters

You're wrong.

And it seems as though you're letting your own resentment through there, which only negates the very point you were trying to make.
Blacklisting is a way of filtering out negative elements, as those prone to them tend to have an uncontrollable need to bring up their negativity as often as possible. And letting a known bigot, bully, or other hateful individual into your giveaways would be disrespectful and damaging to all the courteous entrants (and yourself).
People always think it's about punishment and restriction, but it's about protection and respect- be that of others, or for yourself, to reduce the amount of stress you have to deal with [which, as you may have noticed, is nevertheless still bad enough to drive people from the site regularly].

As far as restricting habitual rule-breakers, that's just non-emotional filtering supporting a stable and consistent site. Only someone without any respect for order or others would find problems in that.

Moreover, the 'disagreeing' angle is utter nonsense that only the "pittiest" and most egotistical of people would indulge in. The "oh, I could never be wrong, and no one is allowed to think differently than me, and I've nothing to improve on- and thus everyone blacklisting me just can't handle people who disagree with them" mentality is utterly disgraceful and lacking in even the most basic of maturity (as is required to take responsibility for one's own actions).
Typically people either get blacklisted because one of three reasons:

  1. They're hateful, hostile, or otherwise negative in what they say. People aren't disagreeing with them, they're finding them repulsive to interact with.
  2. They're being blacklisted by a hateful person, either out of spite, or "in revenge".
  3. Arbitrary or user-specific reasons that clearly wouldn't be based in pettiness, since they're either entirely whimsical or based in the personal rules of that user.

Could your basis for user reasoning be more commonly applied than my own? Perhaps!
Maybe I and those I've discussed this with are in the minority, while users who blacklist over simple disagreements and passing bad moods are the more common expression.
However, your own sentiments above (in the first paragraph) appear to reflect the same issues that cause misogynists like the OP to assume everyone else is at fault for their own negative behaviors, and that's not valid no matter how people approach blacklisting.

I think it was one of the biggest mistake the site did that they added a counter for it.

Yeah, I was against that from the start. It serves no constructive utility, and in implementation, seems to only aggravate things.
Flip side, aggravating the kind of users that'd be aggravated by such a thing into posting about it, does seem to bring a lot of unpleasant users to our attention, so there's that.. "benefit".

Sorry if you regularly come across anyone who have the urge to harass you - I personally haven't got a single hateful commet on my giveaways or on my profile on Steam while everything is public to comment on since my registration ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Or I'm just a nobody enough that noone bothers to attack me, but I never felt the need of blacklisting someone to keep out - every single arguement just ended when I stopped answering, again, maybe I just got the more reasonable folks.
Sorry for taking a poke at you, but I didn't wanted to involve your part about "not every disagreement is a disagreement if your statement is foiled" and not everyone is a hater because my post already got long enough for a reader. If someone lacks self-reflection, mentioning how important is they still won't get it by miracle, so I found it needless to menion. And that's why I emphasized opinion, because be it good or bad, if someone can't stand for their opinion, it doesn't worth fighting on. Still won't make factual mistakes right, but a true opinion (belief, political standpoint, subjective opinions) is not attackable, because it strictly belongs to a person, and they are free to think as they want.
I didn't want to spend sentence after sentence to tell someone how they might or may be wrong - but to tell how meaningless is to care about his blacklists.

Glad I was mistaken in my interpretation of your sentiments, then. ^.^

But no, it can get pretty nasty. I've several users that will leave a nasty comment on each of my threads they stumble onto, even with them being blacklisted. Of course, given that I blacklisted those specific users for hatespeech and the like to begin with, it's certainly to form.

There's actually a specific user that has previously stated that it's his right to stalk and harass people if he wants to, simply because it's a public forum 'and thus he can approach it however he likes, because if you post onto it, you give people the right to respond however they want', and has gone so far as to threaten me with continued harassment when I politely (and repeatedly) asked him to stop bullying me. He's shameless in avoiding any responsibility for his behavior, while being obsessed with his "right" to antagonize me whenever he feels like.

Meanwhile, some users I can't see eye-to-eye with do completely and easily agree to a "non-aggression pact", and strictly avoid further contact [and threat of antagonization] with me, as I do with them. We'll likely never be able to understand each other, but we can afford each other the basic respect we're each due.
Mewanhile, others support my forum events, rather than actively try and sabotage them,
As with one event where I made giveaways based on the number of participating responses over non-participating responses, where many users preferred to intentionally post something negative to lower the giveaway count for other users, rather than support those users in getting more giveaways (Which, you know, 'hurts' me- or rather, my wallet- a whole lot more.. :P But there's a consistent 'Screw Logic' approach with these users.)
or support an upset member of the forums. It won't make up for bigotry or other hardcore hate behavior (which is too irrational, unmanagable, and damaging to let run freely in things you invite others to participate in) but for anything else, those acts certainly invoke reconsideration of the user.

I regularly adjust my tags on users, and remove people from my blacklist when there's any chance I was mistaken about their conduct [and I want to provide them the opportunity to interact with me more, and less reservedly, to affirm that hope].
But, far more often, users'd prefer to lash out at anyone that blacklisted them, offered positivity or rebuke in the face of their negativity, or in any other way compromised their "right to hate without "censorship" "- and they enjoy engaging in this at every opportunity they can, rather than, y'know, take a moment to address the other individual as a person, rather than a game-dispensing bot that should learn to respect the right of its betters to hate as freely as they wish. -.-

Yes, my comment was aimed at OP about the topic - how to find people and revenge blacklist them, which is waste of time in my opinion. :) But I'm just a silly guy here who when got suspended for calling out was more sad that I can't answer to my friends on the discussions than I can't enter giveaways :D I think in the meanwhile white and blacklist gives so much thing to think about. I got un-whitelisted by I think two people yet I kept them on my whitelist because not their WL was the reason to be added. And by disagreement I really meant the topic - if someone respects me as a person and is cultured, I'm up for any discussion, usually I learn some of their viewpoints and ideas which is great! I used to say that lacking knowledge, or being well, stupid (as a state) is not a problem. We all been there. But not even thinking about other information and fighting to stay there, to be stagnant is what really makes the stupid (this time personality) person. Often it's beneficial to be wrong, because the correction makes one better :)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah. I tag people for having me on their whitelist, and try to extend them extra courtesy out of appreciation of their sentiment, but I don't automatically revenge-whitelist them for it [that'd be a pretty manipulative relationship, after all]. Likewise, I don't pay any mind to users who have me blacklisted, either.

Judge people by their actions, and respond in a manner that is constructive and beneficial to those you have concern over.

If you've got time to worry about assuming people out there hate you just because they didn't include you in something, obsess over revenge against those users, are insistent that the only reason you could have had a negative reaction is because of the fault of the other individual, and feel the need to lash out at that user any chance you get..

Well, that's.. pretty darn nutty.
But more so, I envy anyone who has that much free time- damn.

Moreover, the 'disagreeing' angle is utter nonsense that only the "pittiest" and most egotistical of people would indulge in.

i seem to recall this... come in and be hostile towards a chrome thread, bashing on it, when i defend it you tuck tail and run with a BL between your legs.

update:> okay i feel like i'm getting ignored, or overlooked one or the other.. at any rate ill try and explain what i mean in a fashion you do seem to relate too.. "Wall of Text construction commencing" (with errors im sure, cause i suck at grammar)

first off, it doesn't bother me that i was blacklisted by that all too much. other then the fact that ive seen you debate several other people flawlessly (quite frankly rather impressively). but the one time you come in and when i felt like that was an attack of all the users of that thread and i defended and disagreed with that and went straight for the BL without even a slight bit of debating. you already had the debate 50% won even really cause i had no defense against the memory management part of the argument, so yeah i defended the only way i could in a little bit of a smartass way. but like i said, u had it 50% won before it even began.. lol.. also i have never harassed or said a peep about it till now, only reason i do is cause frankly, i gotta point out your actions say differently then your words.. in fact, rather then harass, if you'd kindly check your latest birthday thread (or cakeday i dont remb which) i even wished you a happy birthday still, and on a few other various occasions when i see you made a good point, ive even +1'd them.. anyways, i suppose this particular BL annoys me afterall, just for simply not knowing why it is u wouldn't debate me?

yeah, i've heard that a few times now and obviously witnessed it firsthand too. oh well though, i tried opening up a line of communication with him with no success, that's all i can really do. like i said too, they are fairly good at debating & likely could of won the debate i was referring too. instead though chose to blacklist over a disagreement. which is fine, but then to list that as something "only egotistical people do" i find rather hilarious.

So much truth in this! It's an exponential effect - those with minority opinions get blacklisted out of the forum, which results in anyone who stays behind getting shouted down even harder because those with a similar opinion are gone, so they leave too, so anyone left is an even smaller minority, and so on.

I wouldn't say they are equally bad, but rather that they are the worst possible candidates that both parties could have produced. Then again, the likely alternatives would have been Bernie Sanders and Ted Cruz, and they have personality issues of their own. Bernie being the nicer alt left version of Trump, and Cruz being the most difficult person to like in the old guard republicans (so an alt version of Hilary).

As an outsider looking in, I'm just wishing the Americans the best.

With amount of contributors on these forums and website it's virtually impossible to annoy enough people to get blacklisted enough to not have GAs to enter anymore ;)

"I'm so poor, cannot afford to make GAs" -> has almost 1000 games on Steam xD

not to mention the fact that there are literaly dozens of ways to get games for GAs without spending a penny but with dedicating some time instead. I'm currently hosting an event. I made over 500 GAs in 20 days. I didn't spend a single $ of real money to make this event. Sure I dedicated a lot of time to make it otherwise - but I'm talking about 500+ GAs in under a month. Making few GAs a month would require next to no effort at all. But ofc you're so poor that even if you did so you'd rather add these games to your own account, because you're too poor to share ;p

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah did you look at my games? 50% are 20 cents games. I also idled cards for some people to get more (free) games. I have been on steam for quite some while and have gotten most of my games in deals, rest I've gotten through trading, which takes alot of my free Time.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I did, and 50% are not. And even a 20cent game is more than you gave to the community in over a year. Not to mention owning almost 100 gifts in your steam inventory, way over 200 CS:GO sellable items, done hundreds of trades, almost 40000 steam market transactions - yet still unable to make a single GA because you're so dramatically poor. It's just an excuse. You don't make GAs because you don't want to, because you choose not to, because leeching is most profitable for you. It's your right to make that choice, but don't come up with some shitty excuses. And sawe way it's your right and choice it's anyone elses right or choice to BL you because they prefer their games to go to people who support community, contribute to it, not just try to leech as much as they can from it. simple as that.
