I know nothing about train simulator, but I'd try euro truck simulator 2 if he's into trucks too, they should be similar

I have that one and I'm embarrassed to admit I hadn't thought about that. Thanks for the suggestion.

What about games like Train Valley or Transport Fever? If age or graphics don't matter, there's also Railroad Tycoon and Transport Giant... plus Mini Metro, even though it's very abstract... granted, they don't fit 100%, but they all have trains :P or is it more the simulator aspect he's into?
EDIT:
Added some links, sry about that... I've got a massive hangover ;x.

Ooh, Transport Fever looks like something he'd like, as well.
Thank you for the suggestions. Have a WL.

My son is very into trains and likes crappy little train driving games on the iPad. I want to get him a better train simulator game on Steam, but I don't know enough about the genre to make an informed decision. Train Simulator seems like the obvious answer, but the slew of negative reviews (even ignoring ones that rail [heh] it for having 293845793845 DLCs) makes me leery of getting it.
Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thank you in advance.
