The Host is fine but "Memories of Murder" is one of the best movies ever made imo.Bong Joon Ho is a genius.
I loved Snowpiercer and Okja, too. His western structured movies works brilliantly.

He sure is. I'm so glad that he's finally getting the recognition he deserves (starting with Cannes).

It's the second year in a row when we get a non-English masterpiece nominated for Best Picture. I mean, sure, it won't get the prize (just like Roma didn't), but I do like the trend.

I'm actually more or less satisfied so far (aside from academics ignoring one of the best films I've seen last year, Beanpole; it would have been a perfect fit for "International Feature Film" category).

Jojo Rabbit and Joker are the only 2 ive seen, both superb!

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is super boring and Tarantinos worst movie...
That this movie does get nominated shows that oscars mean nothing.

death proof is kinda dull but has a story... once up on the other side has no real plot and only delivers nice pictures and good scenes that don't create a greater picture.

I totally agree with you. I loved other Tarantino movies but this one is just... ewww (I´m still surprised that with such a good actors and actresses the movie was a waste of time).
I´m totally surprised too that for example the movie : Two popes was not in the Best Picture nomination.
I just hope that Joker, The Irishman or Two Popes wins...

No uncut gems, no the farewell, joker gets the most nominations...
Boo to that

The only film on this list I've seen is "I Lost My Body", which definitely earned its place. And was, oddly enough, the second film in a row my family watched this holiday where a cellist cuts off their own hand. My sister (who plays cello) had some worried questions for my father (who suggested both films) about that, lol

Saw "the Irishman" they used a complex technique for aging the characters, they speak about it in the "behind the scene" short video available on Netflix. The movie is also on Netflix. I don't really have an opion on it, it was a long movie with the usual Scorsese/De niro tandem. The actors were good in my opinion.
The two popes and Mariage story are in my WL, didn't have time for it yet.

The faces look convincing, there's just something off putting though
Maybe the tracking where the face should be at any given time, its almost like it doesnt belong on that body

lol, no space left for The lighthouse and its 2 leads. Wow...i bet they got some brilliant pieces of cinema this year. Checks list...ford vs ferrari, little women, jojo rabbit...yeah, sure, we will be talking about these for a decade i bet
EDIT: also...Joker? it was very good, but hardly oscar material

well I think Ford v Ferrari, Little Women, and Jojo Rabbit were the last 3 for the nominations (by a longshot)
Comment has been collapsed.
they also have reuse the same entries for different categories, which doesn't make the statement "best (insert category) film of 2019" necessarily true.
example, just because one film wins best cinematography, its by omission of other films like Midsommar
And since i'm on that topic, the oscars still think the horror genre holds only Friday the 13th clones

I like going to the cinema, but I haven't seen a single one from the list.
2019 was kinda a bad year for movies in my opinion.
Series however.

True that. Guess I was watching the wrong movies. :-D

there was more to his old movies than the real story, he took some liberty with his characters, there was a clear point, characters and their relation with each other progressed as it need be.
this one, is like a very expensive episode on the history channel.

Only seen 2 of them so far. The Irishman, interesting story, with good acting and writing, but still manages to feel overlong and self indulgent. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was very good and one of the best things Tarantino has done in a while, but still kind of a niche film. I can easily see how anyone not having a feel for that time and place would not connect with it. I'm looking forward to seeing 1917, which will probably win if the Globes are any indication, and Bong Joon Ho's movie - he's a director I've admired since Memories of Murder. I'll get around to the rest eventually, but all in all seems like a lean year when the likes of Jojo Rabbit (I'd rather poke my eye out with a sharp stick) and Little Women (not again) are on the table.

I've seen the Irishman and didn't really like it, I don't understand why they tried to make actors look younger when it's easier and more convincing to take young actors and make them look older. It's something done in movies for ages. Of course it wouldn't be a technical performance but seriously, looking someone around 30 on screen moving like an 80 years old man is very weird.
