Good morning/night everybody.
I just got a letter of acceptance for a Japanese University, so it is almost certain I am going to Japan next Abril. However, i speak just a few words of japanese and need fast (and magical) improvement. Anybody who knows a little.. where to find good material to study by myself... good music bands, ANYTHING, Please tell me now. ps - I am actually learning something from Japanese Pod 101... this week I am going to get a particular professor... but any help is wellcome!

You should ask some Japanese guy to bite you. In a few week you will become Japanese yourself. And yes, it includes knowing the language.

It works with any other language as well. And vampirism. And most infections too.

You might also try LiveMocha. It's cheaper than Rosetta Stone and almost as useful.

I don't know where you live but I think the best way to study Japanese is by talking to a Japanese working in "Japan Foundation" library. They're friendly and willing to help you and sometime while playing Japanese game like igo, shogi, etc. Japan Foundation is like a Japanese Embassy but for culture and education services (beside JASSO). I think several country have them.
If not, then, get Rosetta Stone. It's awesome.
BTW I ENVY YOU SO MUCH D:

lawl, google translator is horrible. It does a DECENT job if you just use words, but typing in whole sentences and translating it makes almost to no sense.

Meneldur! It has been 1 month! What have you learned?

For the record, I lived in Japan for three years without knowing the language. Pick up some Katakana so you can grocery shop [most things are in Katakana-English], and you're fine. If you're set on studying though, Pimsleur is good for pronunciation. Linkwords for vocab. Heisig or Kanji PictOGraphix for kanji. Anything with mnemonics. If you can do at least a little each day, it adds up fast.

yes... a very busy month! I though i could learn it faster... but my master project do not allow me much time to do so...
I'm following JapanesePod 101 audio lessons mostly. Already memorized hiragana and katakana (at very least) and now i'm trying to get more vocab... i guess at this stage i should get more vocab than grammar, once it's more important to understand than to speak... (i know i must have both, but with very poor grammar i may be understood at first)
and yeap.. i have given up on memorizing the kanjis for now xD
