Who exploited Valve? How? When? And that leaves us where?

as a casual observer over the course of the night, I'll do my best to summarize.

Some people(many apparently from brazil) duped the gems and then flooded the market with them not very long after the event started. Currently the page for the event says "Sorry, but there have been some issues with Gems and the Steam Holiday Auction has been temporarily closed. The elves are working frantically to get the issues sorted out, and the auction will start again as soon as they're done.". As such is unclear how many, if any, gems will go to people that did not appear to be exploiting the system. We're at the wait and see phase of this.

Diamond heist: the gems

Valve gives a neat event that allows users to craft cards/emoticons/backgrounds into gems that we could then use to bid on games or craft booster cards with. People (mostly BRs) found an exploit which allowed them to duplicate as many gems as they wanted. They sold them by the millions on the market at 0.03 for 1000 gems. People were buying them and using them to craft the booster packs which cost 400-1200 gems each which basically has crippled the card economy for now. Valve then made the gems untradable/unmarketable and took down the auction page. People who were exploiting are slowly being community banned. No word yet if any rollbacks will happen.

I think that about sums it up.

It was working, I crafted some boosters right after I smelted down 100+ backgrounds.

Some use them to bid absurdly high on the auctions.

As far as I know there was nothing wrong with doing that and that's what Valve allowed. They just didn't think it through very well. They crashed their own market regardless of any exploits.

The problem is that instead of it being at a loss and only there to get you more cards for the games you want, it was ruined by the gems exploiting.

Yeah I'm not really blaming those that took advantage. It is a bit distasteful though seeing people buying up thousands of gems knowing full well they were exploited. Good thing that there was a limit to how many boosters you could craft per day otherwise it would be a lot worse than it is now. I expect card prices to even out after a couple weeks assuming the majority of exploited gems were removed from the system.

Also I highly doubt they bring back auctions for games, there are just too many gems that will probably slip through the cracks.

To be fair, I had no idea about the exploit until they pulled the plug on the whole thing. I was happily buying gem packs at $0.03 and crafting booster pack to try and complete the card sets I have. Looking back on it, I'm pretty sure I bought some of those exploited gems but I'm wondering how Valve will be able to fix this. The cards I got from the crafted booster packs have been used in crafting badges or traded away so it's going to be complex to roll back without affecting a whole lot of legitimate users.

I didn't know they were exploited until everything got taken down. 3 cents seemed really cheap, but considering there were only a couple at a time at 3 cents when I bought, I thought it was because people were having trouble selling due to market lag and selling/buying not going through.

Wait, we were able to use the gems to craft card booster packs?

Yep, there was a drop down list of about 150 games you could craft a booster for ranging in prices of 400-1200 gems depending on the game.

150 games are games with trading cards you have in yours library. so for some ppl there could be 1000 games with free boosters

Ah okay that makes sense as to why a lot of games were missing when I was browsing through them.

Worked for me, and a lot of the people that were community banned had tons of freshly crafted boosters in their inventory.

i did not know about the exploit until everything went dark

i was just trying to get some gems to get a couple boosters to finish off what sets i had

and i had issues buying them, even when i put in buy orders for 20 cents,i tried lower prices, higher prices, and managed only to get 2 bags of gems before it went datk

i assumed since it was new the market was flooded with buying/selling and just the usual issues like over Halloween when i could not purchase TOD tickets and what not

i did not really bother with the auction and did not know that some items had reached 1million gems,i knew i would not have enough to have a chance at bidding and winning,i think they should have set it up as a raffle rather then auction and only allow one entry per user, per game
